Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Percy Pecksniff provides provenance for the painting Paula purchased. What is provenance?

Answer: Something showing the origin of the painting

If you plan on purchasing a work of art, especially as an investment, it is important that you have documentation proving that the art is genuine.

Provenance can take many forms, including: a signed certificate of authenticity from an expert on the artist's work, a gallery sticker attached to the art, a written or verbal statement from the artist, newspaper or magazine articles discussing the art, a gallery catalog, etc.
2. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. How much is a peck? (U.S. measurements)

Answer: 2 gallons

A peck is a dry measurement, equivalent to two gallons or 1/4 of a bushel. This measurement is not commonly used anymore, though the tongue twister remains popular.

Peck can also mean to strike something with a beak (like a bird), to nag, to type slowly or to smooch.

What I can't figure is where Peter Piper found a pickled pepper plant. I look for one each spring at the garden center, but have yet to find one. I still have to pickle the little suckers myself.
3. Panicky Petunia is petrified of pettifoggers. What, pray tell, is a pettifogger?

Answer: A sneaky, underhanded lawyer

A fairly archaic word, a pettifogger is a legal practitioner who employs unethical practices or someone who bickers over trivial matters.

The word comes to us from the French petit (small), combined with the word fogger (underhanded dealer). We most likely get the word fogger from the Fugger family, a wealthy Bavarian merchant family.
4. Pansy Parker proclaims her pal Petunia Paulson to be persnickety. What does Pansy mean by this?

Answer: Petunia is fussy or about trivial matters

Someone who is persnickety can also be called big-headed or snooty.

A snicket is a narrow alley or passage between houses.

Someone who is pawky is cunning or sly.

Someone who is outgoing or friendly can be called personable.

Persnickety is a word I learned as a young child. It was my mother's nickname for her sister.
5. What is Spider-Man's real name?

Answer: Peter Parker

After being bitten by an irradiated spider, high school student Peter Parker gained the incredible strength and agility of the spider. Fashioning himself a pair of web shooters that he attached at his wrists, Parker soon took on the responsibility of protecting his fellow man from such villains as The Chameleon, Doctor Doom and Electro.

Spider-Man first appeared in Marvel Comics' "Amazing Fantasy #15", in 1962. A copy of this comic sold in 2011 for $1.1 million.
6. According to the Monkees, Peter Percival Patterson had a pet pig named what?

Answer: Porky

From the 1967 album "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd."

"Peter Percival Patterson had a pet pig named Porky
This pet pig named Porky loved pie
He loved pizza pie, pumpkin pie, pineapple pie, pizza pie
Mince tarts
And Peter Percival Patterson's pet pig Porky loved
Pie for breakfast, pie for lunch, pie in the afternoon
And pie before he went to bed
Peter Percival Patterson's pet pig Porky at so much pie
That do you know what he did?
He popped."
7. Patrick's pet project is in pomology. Where might we find Patrick pursuing this pastime?

Answer: In an orchard

Pomology is a branch of botany that deals with fruit trees and fruit cultivation.

In 1886, the U.S. Department of Agriculture established the Division of Pomology in order to disseminate information to fruit growers and developers. Another important project taken on by this department was to publish illustrations of new varieties of fruits. These beautiful illustrations can be viewed on the USDA's website.
8. Paelemon, Pallas, Panos and pals performed a Pentozali for Pamela, Pelagia and Parthena. What kind of performance were the girls treated to?

Answer: A Greek dance

The Pentozali is a traditional folk dance from the island of Crete. It is a fast, highly energetic war dance, with the pace increasing as the dance progresses. This dance is typically performed by men, who stand in a close semi-circle with their arms around each other's shoulders.

The first dancer improvises an acrobatic dance, holding onto the hand of the second dancer. When he completes his dance, he works his way to the end of the line and the next person improvises his dance. It's enough to tire you out, just watching!
9. Parsimonious Paolo plundered Penelope's pomegranate patch for his paramour, Penny. Based on the description of Paulo, why did he do this?

Answer: Paolo was a penny-pincher

Someone who is parsimonious could be considered frugal or unwilling to spend money unnecessarily.
10. Patrick pelted Portia's Pomeranian, Puffy, with pebbles. Poor plan, Patrick! For who, or what, is the Pomeranian named?

Answer: A region of central Europe known as Pomerania

Also known as Zwergspitz, the Pomeranian dog is named for the region of Pomerania, which is now a part of Poland and Eastern Germany. This fuzzy little breed is feisty, intelligent and loyal. A small breed, this dog thinks and acts like the large sled dogs he is descended from. Pomeranians make wonderful companions, though they should be trained to curb aggression and excessive barking.

The Pomeranian does not resemble a pomegranate, though if he's like mine, will try to convince you that he loves the fruit and deserves a bite.
