Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the U.S. and many other English speaking countries, what is the most likely way you will see quince prepared?

Answer: As a jam/jelly

The quince has a tart, somewhat astringent flavor and is usually made into jellies and/or jams. When prepared as a jelly it looses some of its sharp flavor and is often described as tasting like a cross between a pear and an apple.
2. Which of the following options is the name for the only mammal on the planet that is covered in scales?

Answer: Pangolin

The pangolin is a burrowing animal, which in appearance, is very similar to an anteater. Found in various parts of Asia and Africa, it has large, very hard scales. It is these scales that have led to the animal's skin being used for protective garments for warriors, similar to a suit of armor.

This built in armor has led to this creature being one of the most trafficked animals in the world, and may someday lead to it's eventual extinction.
3. What is the proper word for a group of cobras?

Answer: Quiver

Hopefully, none of us will ever run into one these, but, in case we do, it might help to know that the name for a group of cobras is a quiver of cobras. It is an apt word, since you very well might be quivering if you run into them. It should be noted that cobras, in general, are solitary animals and running into a quiver is not common.
4. If your cousin was admiring your periapts, which of the following things would have caught her attention?

Answer: Charm

A periapt is a charm or amulet worn for good luck or protection. Originally, a periapt was an amulet worn around the neck, hanging from a cord. The word comes from the Greek word "periapton" which roughly means "hung around".
5. Which of the following would a numismatist be likely to have in their collection?

Answer: Qursh

Simply put, a riyal is the monetary unit of Saudi Arabia, and a qursh is coin worth 1/20th of a riyal. It can be compared to the American nickel. The other three options are nonsense words.
6. A plinth is any marble statue of a toga draped female.

Answer: False

A plinth is the heavy base that supports a vase or a statue. They are usually made of the same material as the object they support. They can be simple, or very elaborate.
7. Which of the following options is a delicious marine bivalve?

Answer: Quahog

The quahog is a hard-shell clam that is native to the Atlantic coastal regions between Canada and Central America. This name is derived from the Algonquin languages found in the New England areas of the U.S. This tasty bivalve is an important part of aquaculture in the region.
8. Which of the following words could be considered synonymous with the word balustrade?

Answer: Parapet

A parapet might best be described as a wall or fence-like barrier usually found at the edge of a bridge, terrace, or roof. They are used for both style and appearance as well as for safety purposes. Parapets come in a huge variety of styles, limited only by the imagination of the architect in charge.
9. If someone were to tell you that your new neighbor is a bit of a quidnunc, what would he be trying to tell you?

Answer: The new neighbor is a nosy gossip.

A quidnunc is a term for an inquisitive person who likes to gossip. Expect the newest member of your neighborhood to be a nosy busybody who wants to get into everybody's personal business. This is generally not a complimentary description.
10. A pinafore is a lacy umbrella used to protect the user from the sun.

Answer: False

This is a better description of a parasol not a pinafore. A pinafore is a sleeveless garment often worn as an apron. The little girl in the back of this painting is wearing a white pinafore over her dress.
