Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals: Of the animals listed, which one lays eggs?

Answer: Echidna

Although all of these animals are classed as mammals, the echidna is a monotreme - an egg laying mammal. Also known as a spiny anteater, the echidna is one of those interesting and unusual creatures native to Australia and New Guinea. They are not large animals, and are, for the most part, solitary creatures.

The elk is a member of the deer family, found in North America, and the eland is an African antelope. Elephants can be African or Indian, and are pachyderms.
2. Brain Teasers: The letter E has been removed from these words: BAGL, NTRPRIS, XTR What describes them all?

Answer: Famous ships

HMS Beagle was the ship Charles Darwin sailed in on his trip to the Galapagos Islands. USS Enterprise was an aircraft carrier (as well as being a star ship on "Star Trek"). HMS Exeter was one of the ships (along with Ajax and Achilles) that forced the German raider Graf Spee into Montevideo harbour in 1939, resulting eventually in the scuttling of the German ship.

A beagle is a delightful dog, and Exeter is a place in Devon (and Ontario, and New Hampshire), but enterprise doesn't fit either description. A bugle is a musical instrument, but what to do with the letter A then? Only "ships" fits all three.
3. Celebrities: Which of these double E actors sometimes acts with his brother and/or their father?

Answer: Emilio Estevez

Emilio Estevez is the son of Martin Sheen and the brother of Charlie Sheen, with Estevez being the original family name. Emilio and Charlie have appeared together in a number of movies, including "Young Guns" (1988) and "Men at Work" (1990). Emilio has also made brief appearances on Charlie's TV show "Two and a Half Men". Martin played Emilio's father more than once, including in "The Way" (2010) which Emilio directed. All three appeared in "Badlands" (1973), though Emilio and Charlie were uncredited child extras, whilst Martin was the star.

Edward Ellis may be best known for his appearance in "The Thin Man" (1934). Edward Evans was a British actor who appeared in the television soap "Coronation Street" in the 1960s. Erik Estrada is probably best remembered as Ponch in the series "ChiPs" (1977-83).
4. Entertainment: Which of these amusement parks is located in Phoenix, Arizona?

Answer: Enchanted Island

Located within the city's Encanto Park, Enchanted Island advertises itself as a great spot for kids' birthday parties, and offers a variety of rides, including a mini-coaster called the Dragon Wagon that will give kiddies a thrill without scaring them silly.

Of the other choices, only Elitch Gardens is in the USA, in Denver, Colorado. Everland is in South Korea and Expoland is in Japan.
5. For Children: Which muppet has red fur, is three and a half years old, and speaks in a high-pitched squeaky voice?

Answer: Elmo

Elmo began life simply as the red baby monster, but proved so popular that over time, he was given his own segments on "Sesame Street", including "Elmo's World". He is known to giggle.

Ernie is Bert's friend and Esme is a cow belonging to Oscar the Grouch. Enzo appeared in one episode of "Sesame Street" speaking Spanish.
6. General (Names): Which of these E names means "God is my oath", and has been given to queens, a two-time Oscar winning actress and, in a shortened form, to a woman accused of murdering her parents?

Answer: Elizabeth

The name Elizabeth comes from the Greek form of the Hebrew name Elisheva, with the meaning stated in the question.

England's Queen Elizabeth II began her reign in 1952, following the death of her father George VI. Elizabeth I was a child of Henry VIII, and reigned from 1558 until 1603. The double Oscar winner was Elizabeth Taylor, who was named Best Actress for "Butterfield 8" (1960) and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1966). Lizzie Borden was the accused killer.
7. Geography: Which of these Canadian places is NOT located in Ontario, and IS the capital of the province in which it is located?

Answer: Edmonton

Edmonton is the capital city of the province of Alberta, well to the west of Ontario, and is situated on the North Saskatchewan River. It is by far the largest of the listed communities, being in the top ten in population in the entire country. It is also much farther north than the three Ontario communities, which are all in the southwestern part of their province, which is also the most southerly part of the country.

An Edmonton attraction is the large shopping centre known as the West Edmonton Mall. Elora, Ontario is famous for its scenic gorge. Exeter is known for being home to white squirrels! Elmira is in Ontario's Mennonite country, with the sight of horse drawn buggies being common.
8. History: Each of these places has a connection to a different war. Which of them was the site of riots and mutiny in September 1917?

Answer: Etaples

Etaples, France, was the site of a vast transit camp for British and commonwealth forces during World War I, and also the location of a number of military hospitals treating wounded soldiers from the front lines. Conditions in the camp were not ideal, and subsequent to mutinies in the French army earlier in 1917, some units stationed at Etaples engaged in riots and attempted mutiny. One British soldier was executed for his part in the affair, while others received lighter sentences of varying degree.

The Battle of Elandslaagte in October 1899 was part of the Second Boer War, and immediately preceded the Siege of Ladysmith, South Africa. The Battle of the Ebro (River) was part of the Spanish Civil War, and lasted from July to November 1938. The Battle of Eniwetok was part of the Pacific campaign during World War II, taking place over several days in February 1944 in the Eniwetok Atoll, in the Marshall Islands.
9. Hobbies: Embellishments play a big part in traditional (as opposed to digital) scrapbooking. Which of these would NOT be considered an embellishment to a scrapbook page?

Answer: Photograph

A photograph or photos are usually the main focus of a scrapbook page, which embellishments serve to enhance. There are many types of embellishment from which to choose, and it is sometimes easy to use too many and allow them to take over the page!

Brads are a type of fastener which can be poked through the page and made fast by spreading two little winglike bits, leaving the colourful head to embellish the page. Ribbons and buttons are exactly what you might think. Other choices might be washi tape, eyelets, colourful staples, stickers of various shapes and sizes, letters of the alphabet (or complete words), frames, photo corners... I said there were a lot, didn't I?
10. Humanities: Which of these characters sings "I'm Not That Girl" in her musical?

Answer: Elphaba in "Wicked"

"Wicked" tells the story of Elphaba Thropp, sometimes known as the Wicked Witch of the West in the land of Oz. The song "I'm Not That Girl" is something of a lament about her love life, or lack thereof. Idina Menzel portrayed Elphaba in the original Broadway production.

Eponine sings "On My Own" as a solo. Evita is heard to sing "Don't Cry for Me Argentina". Edna Turnblad tells us "You Can't Stop the Beat".
