Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Popular Music. Liz Phair's debut album is to the Rolling Stones' 'Exile On Main Street' as the Residents' debut album is to...?

Answer: The Beatles' 'Meet the Beatles'

Phair's debut, 'Exile In Guyville,' is a tribute and reference to the Stones' classic album, while the Residents' debut, 'Meet the Residents,' refers to the Beatles' first album (even keeping the same artwork, though defaced).
2. Film. The 1970 film 'Airport' is to the 1980 film 'Airplane!' as the 1931 film 'Frankenstein' is to...?

Answer: 'Young Frankenstein' (1974)

Mel Brooks' film spoofs the classic original, just as 'Airplane!' spoofed the seminal duster picture 'Airport.' The other answers are a sequel, a remake, and another horror movie with a different character, none comedic.
3. World Literature. Alexandre Dumas' 'The Man In the Iron Mask' is to 'The Three Musketeers' as J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Return of the King' is to...?

Answer: 'The Hobbit'

Dumas' 'The Man In the Iron Mask' concludes the five-book saga he began with 'The Three Musketeers', which introduced Athos, Artemis, Porthos and D'Artagnan to the world. Similarly, 'The Return Of the King' concludes Tolkien's own four-book saga, composed of a trilogy and the book which began it all, 'The Hobbit'.
4. History. Alexander the Great is to Darius III as Ulysses S. Grant is to...?

Answer: Robert E. Lee

Darius, the last of the Archaemenid kings of Persia, is best known for being the battlefield nemesis of the Macedonian conqueror Alexander. During the American Civil War, Union general Grant fought Confederate general Lee at the Wilderness, Richmond, and Petersburg from 1864 to 1865.
5. Animals. One is to narwhal as two is to...?

Answer: Walrus

While the male narwhal has a single five to eight foot spiraling tusk, the walrus has two (much smaller) tusks.
6. Sports. The Green Bay Packers are to 1967 as the Boston Pilgrims (later Red Sox) are to...?

Answer: 1903

The Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I, 1967. The fledgling American League team the Pilgrims were the winners in the first meeting of what would become the World Series in 1903, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates in eight games.
7. History. Homer is to 'blind' as Milton is to...?

Answer: Blind

Homer, reputed author of the epic poems 'The Iliad' and 'The Odyssey', was said to be blind. John Milton, author of the epic poem 'Paradise Lost', went totally blind from 1651 to 1652.
8. World Languages. Chief Sequoya is to Cherokee as Abbe Charles Michel de l'Epee is to...?

Answer: American Sign Language

Sequoya, also known by his English name George Guess, developed the 86-character syllabary for his native language Cherokee. Wanting to preserve Cherokee language and culture, he did this on his own, with no formal training, over the years 1810-1820; it is still used today. Michel de L'Epee, on the other hand, developed the fingerspelling alphabet used in ASL today; it was brought over to the U.S. by Laurent Clerc.
9. Popular Music (a tricky one). Geddy Lee is to Rush as...?

Answer: Roger Daltrey is to the Who

All of these answers contain singers and their groups. But Rush's lyrics are nearly entirely written by their drummer, Neil Peart. Lee is a singer of others' words. Similarly, Daltrey sang words written by Pete Townshend, primary songwriter for the Who. Fogerty, Morrissey and Reed all wrote their own words.
10. World History. Israel is to Golda Meir as the Philippines is to...?

Answer: Corazon Aquino

Golda Meir, prime minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974, was that country's first female premier. Likewise, Corazon Aquino served as president of the Philippines from 1986 to 1992, that country's first female ruler. Marcos and Ramos were also presidents of the Philippines, but they were not women!
