Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A well known myth regarding this broadcasting company is that when services resumed post World War II, the first words uttered by the announcer were "As I was saying before we were so rudely interrupted...". Which is this broadcasting network, one of the largest in the world, that is nicknamed "Auntie"?

Answer: BBC

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) was originally established as the British Broadcasting Company Ltd. in 1922 by a group of six telecom companies which included Marconi and General Electric. It has its own coat of arms and a motto that states "Nation shall speak peace unto Nation".
2. Some newspapers and magazines have regular columns by 'Aunt Agony'. Readers write in with their questions, which the columnist tries to provide answers for. Which of these subjects are you least likely to come across in such a column?

Answer: Scientific theories

The concept of this kind of advice column is considered to have originated in "The Athenian Mercury", a biweekly periodical that was first published in London in 1690. A well known American 'Aunt Agony' column called 'Dear Abby' was written by Pauline Phillips using the pseudonym, Abigail Van Buren.
3. In English, your father's sister, mother's sister, father's brother's wife and mother's brother's wife are all called aunts. However, most Indian languages have different names for each of these relatives.

Answer: True

In Hindi, for instance, father's sister is known as 'bua' while mother's sister is called 'masi'. Father's elder brother's wife is called 'kaki' while his younger brother's wife is called 'chachi' and mother's brother's wife is called 'mami'.
4. "Auntie Mame" was a 1958 film starring Rosalind Russell and Forrest Tucker that was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Picture. Which actress starred in the title role in the 1974 musical version of this film called "Mame"?

Answer: Lucille Ball

Both movies were based on the novel "Auntie Mame" written by Patrick Dennis. The plot involved an orphan named Patrick who was brought up by his eccentric and free spirited Aunt Mame after the death of his parents. While the story is fictional, the character of Aunt Mame was modeled on the author's real life aunt.
5. Bertie Wooster is a fictional character with two aunts who are diametrically opposite in nature - Aunt Agatha, the strict and fearsome one, and Aunt Dahlia, the fun loving and friendly one. Which British author created these characters?

Answer: P. G. Wodehouse

Bertram 'Bertie' Wooster and his trusted valet, Jeeves, featured in a number of short stories and novels by P. G. Wodehouse. Aunt Dahlia usually gets Bertie to do her bidding by dangling the food cooked by her French chef, Anatole, as a carrot. On the other hand, Bertie tries his best to steer clear of Aunt Agatha's path as far as possible.
6. In the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, even elderly women who are not relatives are referred to as "Auntie".

Answer: True

Middle aged women may be referred to as 'Auntie' even if they are strangers as a mark of respect. Since children rarely refer to elders by their surnames, unlike their Western counterparts, even female neighbours and family friends are generally addressed as 'Auntie'.
7. Which fictional aunt had a niece who was transported to a distant land by a tornado where she met a Cowardly Lion, Tin Woodman and Scarecrow?

Answer: Aunt Em

"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", written by L. Frank Baum, featured a young girl named Dorothy who lived on a farm in Kansas with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. When a tornado strikes, Dorothy and her dog Toto suddenly find themselves in the Land of Oz where they encounter several strange characters and embark on different adventures before finally returning home.
8. Before it was rebranded the "Pearl Milling Company", which American food company owned the 'Aunt Jemima' trademark for breakfast foods?

Answer: Quaker Oats Company

Although the trademark was first created in 1893, it was officially registered only in April, 1937. The character was inspired by a popular American song called "Old Aunt Jemima" written by Billy Kersands, an African-American songwriter. In 2021, Quaker Oats announced that it would discontinue the 'Aunt Jemima' trademark due to its racist origins.

Instead the brand was renamed the "Pearl Milling Company" referring to the original mill that first made the self rising pancake mix.
9. Agatha Christie's detective Jane Marple was an aunt; she had only one relative who made an appearance in some novels, a nephew called Raymond West. What was his profession?

Answer: Author

Raymond West first made an appearance in "Murder at the Vicarage" along with his wife. He is introduced as a well known author and although he comes across as pompous, often underestimating his aunt's powers of deduction, he seems to be quite fond of her and sponsors trips for her on different occasions.
10. Which of these Biblical aunts was also stepmother to her sister's sons?

Answer: Leah

Jacob was married to two sisters, Leah and Rachel. Thus Leah was both an aunt and stepmother of Rachel's sons, Joseph and Benjamin. Their story can be found in the book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible.
