Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It won't surprise anyone to hear that kyleisalive brought along a video game for us to play. Which of these game series stars a honey bear and a large red bird, who contend against a witch named Gruntilda?

Answer: Banjo-Kazooie

Bring Your Own Banjo-Kazooie was kyleisalive's interpretation of the message asking guests to BYOB. The Banjo-Kazooie series of games feature Banjo the honey bear and his friend Kazooie, a large red bird, described as a Red-Crested Breegull. In the original game, first released for Nintendo, Banjo and Kazooie have to find their way through Gruntilda's lair to rescue Banjo's sister Tooty.

It is a platform game, meaning that players must jump around on and between platforms on the screen as they progress. Players need to collect jigsaw puzzle pieces in order to open new worlds, and musical notes to open new rooms. (Banjo, by the way, plays the banjo and Kazooie plays the kazoo. Tooty plays the piccolo.)
2. Arriving with full arms, eburge proudly announced that he had brought his own bush tucker. Which of these is NOT considered to be Australian bush tucker?

Answer: Sheep

While people living in the bush (the country) might eat a lot of lamb and mutton, the phrase bush tucker refers to native Australian species, especially those that were traditionally eaten by Indigenous Australians before the arrival of European settlers. Kangaroo is one of the best known of these, and kangaroo meat is readily available in urban and suburban markets. Wombat berries (Eustrephus latifolus) is the name of a vine with tubers that are eaten baked. Seven of the nine species of Macadamia tree are native to the east coast of Australia (and the other two to New Caledonia and Indonesia), although extensive commercial production in Hawaii has led many to think of it as a Hawaiian tree.
3. Flopsymopsy arrived with her pet, who is named Sweet Georgia Brown because she is "Oh so sweet, with two left feet" and is brown in color (although leporid breeders usually refer to the fur color as chocolate). What kind of pet did flopsymopsy bring for partygoers to pat?

Answer: Bunny

Leporids are members of the rabbit and hare families, characterized by their long ears, short tails and hopping locomotion. They are often found as family pets (and my family did indeed once have one named Sweet Georgia Brown for the reason stated), as well as being raised for food and fur. In Australia, imported rabbits have had a devastating impact on the local environment. Rabbits were brought along as a food source with the First Fleet in 1788, but do not appear to have become a problem until 1859, when a Victorian property owner released 12 wild rabbits (sent to him by a nephew in England) so that he could hunt them. Within ten years, they had spread in plague proportions all over the southeastern part of the continent.

No pointy sticks posed any danger to flopsymopsy's pet at my party.
4. Dcpddc478 decided it was important to bring along an essential ingredient for making a beverage that would keep all the party guests wide awake, ready to participate to the fullest in all activities. Which of these describes how BYOB was interpreted?

Answer: Bring Your Own Beans for Coffee

While one might add brown sugar to coffee, and enjoy a biscuit as an accompaniment, neither of those is essential for producing a nice cuppa, and bottled water has very little in the way of stimulant effect. Everyone in the Authors Lounge appreciates the value of coffee (and chocolate), so it's not surprising that dcpddc478 made sure we would have plenty of it available.

The brown color of the drink brewed from roasted coffee beans is due to the reaction during roasting of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) with components of the beans. The chemistry involved in producing the aroma of coffee is not well understood, and there is as yet no synthetic coffee smell available. Part of the scent comes from the production of melanoidins when sugars and amino acids combine in the Maillard reaction, which occurs during roasting when the temperature reaches 140 C (285 F). Coffee flavor has been successfully (according to opinion) approximated, starting with the development by Hermann Staudinger of a synthetic coffee flavor in 1907.
5. Deciding that it would be appropriate to Bring Your Own Bangers (Australian slang for sausages), salami_swami appropriately brought some German sausage for the barbecue. Which of these might have been on the platter?

Answer: Bratwurst

Bratwurst has been produced in Germany since at least 1313, when it is documented to have been produced in Nuremberg. The exact recipe for the sausage, method of cooking, and mode of presentation for eating varies from place to place. While the sausage is usually grilled or pan-fried, it is also common to find it simmered in beer (sometimes followed by frying).

Boudin refers to a range of sausages in French, Belgian, German, French Canadian and Cajun cooking, although the latter only includes boudin blanc, a white sausage, rather than the fuller range found in other cuisines. Black pudding is a type of sausage made from blood and thickening ingredients. This name is most commonly used in the United Kingdom, where it refers to a sausage made with pork blood and thickened with oatmeal. The South African boerewors (farmer's sausage) has Dutch roots, and contains such spices as coriander seed, pepper, nutmeg, cloves and allspice. Boerewors is commonly cooked at a braai (South African barbecue) and served with pap (a porridge made from mielie-meal, something like polenta or grits).
6. Trust Rowena8482 to decide that the invitation meant guests should bring their own books - nothing like a lot of heads buried in books to really generate that festive atmosphere! Which of the following books might this self-confessed Science Fiction addict have brought along to share with the other guests?

Answer: "Foundation" by Isaac Asimov

"Foundation" (1951) was the first book published in Isaac Asimov's "Foundation Series". It was a collection of four previously-published short stories, along with a new one to tie them all together, which introduced us to the work of Hari Seldon, and the concept of psychohistory. "Foundation and Empire" (1952) and "Second Foundation" (1953) brought together the remaining original short stories; these three books became known as "The Foundation Trilogy" for nearly thirty years, until Asimov was persuaded to write two sequels and two prequels.

In 1966 the original trilogy was awarded a Hugo Award (one of the prestigious science fiction awards named after Hugo Gernsback, founder of the classic SciFi magazine "Amazing Stories", presented by the World Science Fiction Society) for Best All-Time Series.
7. Shuehorn decided to entertain the party guests with some music, and brought along some CDs featuring her favorite crooner, which included such tunes as "White Christmas" and "Pennies From Heaven". How did she interpret the instruction to BYOB?

Answer: Bring Your Own Bing Crosby Records

Life is too short to list all the classic musical performances of Bing Crosby in a career that started in the 1920s, and continued until his death in 1977. Only a few weeks before his death, he filmed a Christmas special for television that featured him singing "The Little Drummer Boy" in a duet with David Bowie.

Bing Crosby was also a highly successful movie actor, winning an academy Award (Best Actor) for "Going My Was" (1944) as well as two other nominations. His signature song, Irving Berlin's "White Christmas", was performed in the 1942 movie "Holiday Inn", in which he played a singer and failed farmer trying to turn his farm into a special resort that only opened on holidays.
8. Rossian had farther to travel than most of the guests, so seemed to think BYOB was a reference to being prepared to stay the night, and brought along a bedroll. What is the common Australian term used to describe a bundle in which one carries ones belongings, ready to set up camp while travelling on foot?

Answer: Swag

A swag was traditionally carried by migrant workers, who had to travel long distances on foot between jobs, and contained essential possessions. It is rolled up by placing a waterproof cloth (which protects the swag and serves as shelter in bad weather) on the ground, and folding one's blankets on top.

The blankets were traditionally blue in color, so a swag was also sometimes referred to as a bluey. Personal belongings go on top, and the whole is then rolled up and fastened with straps, belts, towels, whatever is handy.
9. Funnytrivianna thought the party guests might enjoy spending some time engaging in a sport that has variants called bocce, skittles, and petanque. Which 'B' piece of sporting equipment was it necessary to provide so that this could happen?

Answer: Bowling ball

Most indoor bowling games involve an attempt to knock objects down by rolling a ball at them. The number, size and shape of the target objects, as well as the size of the ball, vary dramatically between the various forms. Outdoor versions more often involve attempting to roll a ball (usually asymmetrical to make life more challenging) so that you end up closer to some stated target than any of your opponents. Irish road bowling, on the other hand, involves rolling or throwing a ball along a road, attempting to cover the course (usually several miles in length) with the fewest number of throws.
10. As a guest at my own party, I decided that I wanted myself to Bring My Own Bollinger. What traditional celebratory drink is manufactured by this company?

Answer: Champagne

Bollinger is one of the premier wine producers of the Champagne region of France, hence still entitled to call their sparkling wine Champagne. The Champagne House of Renaudin Bollinger was officially established in 1829 in Ay by Hennequin de Villermont (whose family had already been growing wine in the region), Paul Renaudin and Jacques Bollinger, an immigrant from Wurttemberg. (Other Germans involved in the establishment of prestigious Champagne Houses included Johann-Jopsef Krug and the Heidseick family, responsible for Veuve Cliquot). The House has been managed by the Bollinger family ever since, and its name was changed to Bollinger in the 1960s.

We moved on to something more within my price range after the first glass of Bollinger.
