Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Eldon, Iowa has one trivial claim to fame. Which of these?

Answer: An artist was impressed by a little cottage he saw there which became the farmhouse in the painting "American Gothic"

Grant Wood was so impressed by the little structure he noticed in Eldon he used it as the background of his classic painting "American Gothic" in 1930. The rather stone-faced farm couple was an actual dentist and his daughter (the man holding a pitchfork).

But the structure Wood saw in Eldon inspired the whole painting. Are there really two headed cows? I doubt it. I doubt that Iowans would be too thrilled taking on the roles of zombies, either! And I suspect no manufacturer would be eager to take credit for that dreaded axe.
2. There was a little-read book called "Was" in the early 1990s. What was that novel about?

Answer: It was based on the notion that Dorothy Gale (she from, of course, "The Wizard Of Oz") might have been a real girl

Geoff Ryman wrote the completely intriguing "Was", released in 1992. I usually think I am the only one who has read it (but I hope not) but it DID deal with a real life Dorothy Gale. In the tale she was a student of Baum's who he idealized into the character in "The Wizard Of Oz". What a mind this author has! In the story Dorothy was beaten silly by dear ol' Aunt Em and was sexually mishandled by Uncle Henry.

In this mixed up world Dorothy ran away from there quick (but never quite found Oz...), ending up a prostitute in Kansas somewhere and finally a mental patient! Believe it or not, Ryman managed to present this nightmarish fantasy in a respectful and almost reverential way.

He is best known as a Sci-Fi writer and those creative juices were certainly flowing!
3. What best describes "Crithidia"?

Answer: Oh, that's easy. It's one of those parasites

According to Webster's it is a genus of flagellate protozoan parasite that attacks invertebrate animals. It's one of those words that probably won't show up in general dinner conversation...
4. A (likely awful) TV Pilot for a series that never made it to the schedule. Which one is right?

Answer: "Poochinski". A dead cop reincarnated as a police dog? Sponsors, especially Alpo and Kibbles And Bits probably liked it, but no one else did much

"Poochinski" is actually right! And, to make it sound even more puzzling, Peter Boyle was supposed to provide the "persona" of the dog! Thank goodness "Everybody Loves Raymond" is a good day job for him now. At least he doesn't actually bark on that show.
5. The next one addresses Maria Parego. Who was that, for Heaven's sake?

Answer: I believe she was the puppeteer who created that Italian sock puppet "Topo Gigio"

Ed Sullivan's entertainment show was a standard in the 50s and 60s. He had all the "hot" acts show up, from the Beatles to The Mamas And The Papas (and countless others). Ed himself was a bit of a grumpy sort and didn't like all that modern stuff back then.

But he DID like that little puppet Topo Gigio, who was a weekly feature. Miss Parego created him and he eventually became a little puppet with three hands directing him through and another who supplied the voice. A sock with a staff! Imagine that.
6. I'd like to purchase an "Aoudad". Where do you send me to shop for one?

Answer: I'd go to Texas and look around. They have lots of sheep there

Go to Texas first! The Aoudad sheep (sometimes referred to as Barbary sheep) are quite populous there. In fact, there are more there than there are in its native North Africa. And they say they only grow cows in Texas. Not entirely so!
7. While your parents might have said it, too, which screen pair can be heard saying "Go to college. Study hard. Study hard." in a movie (if you listen carefully, that is...)?

Answer: I know you won't believe me but it was actually Beavis & Butt-Head, but you have to play the soundtrack backwards to hear it

Sometimes in quizzes such as this it is always best to pick the most peculiar answer, eh? In this case the correct answer really is Beavis and Butt-Head. In "Beavis & Butt-Head Do America" (1996) there is a scene where they are stuck on a desert and hallucinating from the exposure. Play the soundtrack backwards as they do all that and there is the college advice. Imagine them being public service examples!? Not that having to play something backwards to get a message is generally helpful, but those two never did things quite right or simply.
8. I am an "Asian Bride" but it is safe to say that I am not getting married or anything. Heck, I'd have to be an "Asian Groom", after all. Anyway, what am I?

Answer: You have such ornamental flowers, too. I'm pretty sure you are a type of eggplant

I'm an eggplant, figuratively speaking. A bit of a zebra-ish looking little thing (my stripes are white and lavender). I taste a bit like corn, but I am a pretty healthy vegetable. Good for your heart and all that. And the whole idea of comparing me to a pregnant goat! Simply unforgivable :).
9. 20 feet and 2 1/4 inches! Take it from there and what explains that number?

Answer: Oooh. Oooh. I know this one! That was the length of the longest fingernails on record by the end of the 20th century

Shrihar Challil of Poona, India had extremely large fingernails! Only on his left hand do they go that far (he keeps his right hand trimmed). I suppose the reason for doing that must be rather obvious. But he hit The Guiness Book for his rather odd effort.
10. Last but not least...name the weirdest tabloid headline you have ever read?

Answer: Yikes. "A Woman Eats Dirt And Gives Birth To A Rock". Ouch.

Making up three of these was so easy, given such type of "journalism". And if I ever meet up with that woman who birthed a rock, well, I'll refer to it/him/her as Dino or something. But it really was a headline. You wanna know which tabloid it was? It was easily the most ridiculous here in the States: The Globe. Balderdash I say! I hope you all had some fun with this.

It was a whole lot of fun for me to write!
