Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This gorgeous chicken is a representative of a breed that was named for the area in New England where the breed was developed in the late nineteenth century. It is perpetually popular among chicken fanciers as a multi-purpose bird - that is, egg producer, meat source and beautiful show chicken. What breed is shown?

Answer: Rhode Island Red

Not surprisingly the Rhode Island Red chicken is the official state bird of Rhode Island. The Oklahoma State University Department of Animal Science's publication titled "Breeds of Livestock" describes the Rhode Island Red as "a good choice for the small flock owner. Relatively hardy, they are probably the best egg layers of the dual purpose breeds." Rhode Island Red hens will lay brown eggs. Both hens and roosters are used for meat; a meat which Wikipedia described as "rich flavored ... suitable for making chicken stew".
2. Most sources agree it is a small percentage of the human population who are natural redheads - as is the person shown in the photo. People of northern or western European ancestry may be more likely to have (natural) red hair than the "average". Considering the entire population of the world, what is the percentage of people with naturally occurring red hair?

Answer: 1-2%

It is that VERY small percentage of the (entire) population - 1 to 2 percent. Their numbers may be small but our redheads are apparently very proud of their uniqueness and must enjoy spending time together. Around the world there have been various events to honor redheads.

For example, Ginger Pride March (in the UK), Red Head Day Festival (in The Netherlands) and The Ginger Pride Parade (in Australia). An article published as a part of the BBC News Magazine in October, 2013 states - considering its population - it is most likely the greatest number of red heads live in the USA.
3. Traditionally, events of happiness and celebration in China incorporate as much of the color red as possible because the color red is often associated with success, loyalty, honor, fertility, and love. The red object shown in the photo is a very important part of the Chinese New Year Celebration. What is this celebration called - in the English translation - where one would see an abundance of those objects?

Answer: The Lantern Festival

The Lantern Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first Chinese lunar month. The Lantern Festival traditionally marks the end of the Chinese New Year Spring Festival period. It is a holiday of long-standing tradition and honor, yet the customs and practices may vary among specific areas and cultures.

The celebration always occurs during the full moon (phase) and looking at the moon is part of the celebration. Other activities often associated with the Lantern Festival may include watching fireworks, participating in dances, solving riddles and eating the dessert tangyuan (or, yuanxiao). No matter what other activities are embraced the lanterns are the focal point of the holiday.
4. If you are learning about the aspects of branding the logo that would accompany the photo will surely be mentioned. Information gathered (by several sources) early in the 21st century estimate that more than 92% of the world's population can identify the product by seeing this red and white logo. What is the product?

Answer: A soft drink (non-alcoholic) company

What started - in the Atlanta, Georgia area of the USA - as a medicinal pain-relief product intended as a substitute for the highly addictive morphine is now a world-wide commodity. The red and white logo shown in the photo is among any "top ten brands list" to be complied whether considering universal recognition, brand worth or the ability to influence and inspire.

The logo is NOT patented and is not applicable to be patented. Such is not the case for the curved bottle shape universally known as the Coca-Cola bottle.

It is called the "contour bottle" (by Coca-Cola) and is protected by a design patent.
5. The red fruit shown in the photo has been lauded as being one of the healthiest fruits in the world. Native to the certain parts of the Middle East and India, references of this fruit have been seen for more than four thousand years. Today it is still popular for its many uses. What symbol of prosperity and ambition is shown?

Answer: Pomegranate

Much has been written about the lovely, unique and delicious pomegranate. Its possible benefits have been linked to (but also disputed) relief of heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Regardless of its healing potential, the pomegranate remains a favorite for cooking, baking, juices, cocktails and as a garnish. Did you know that the spice known as anar dana which is popular in Indian and Pakistani foods is actually dried pomegranate seeds? Well, it is; just another way to enjoy this wonderful red fruit.
6. Many of our team sports have incorporated the use of a mascot or more than one mascot into their game day. Major league baseball (MLB in the USA) is no exception. The photo shows one of the four mascots who are part of a (MLB) baseball team. The character is Mr. Red; who is his team?

Answer: Cincinnati Reds

Mr. Red is one of the four "official" mascots of the Cincinnati Reds. The other three are Gapper, Mr. Redlegs and Rosie Red. It is uncertain when and where the use of a team mascot began. Most likely it was by happenstance. That being, something or someone was thought to bring good luck to a team and, thus, their attendance and support was important.

This morphed into a form of team identity. Team members, coaches and other personnel may come and go but the mascot will remain. Of course, this has become a huge opportunity for marketing and branding (for the mascot's team) and with that a certain revenue source.

It is not really about the sport, you know. It is all about the money.
7. Few things could be more eye catching than a flashy, fabulous, flamboyant and FAST red race car driving past you. The photo is of such an automobile. It was built by an Italian sports car manufacturer and models of similar cars are often listed among "the most expensive" automobiles. What car is shown? Hint: It might have helped to have shown a close-up of the prancing horse logo.

Answer: Ferrari

It is a Ferrari. Its color is called: Race Red. The info included with the photo labels it as being taken at the Geneva Motor Show - 2015. The model is a 488 GTB, twin-turbo V8 engine, coupe (body style). Its price tag was just over $250,000 (American) at that time.

Not every Ferrari is red but (according to wikipedia.org) very many of them are. That same article explains that red is the national color for Italian race cars. It also mentions blue is the color for French race cars, white for German race cars and green for race cars representing the UK.
8. The photo shown is of the painting titled, "St. Jerome as Cardinal" (English translation) by Peter Paul Rubens. Cardinals are senior officials who serve the Roman Catholic Church. For centuries cardinals have worn red robes (their color is more likely to be called scarlet than red) and the broad brimmed hat - as shown in the photo of the painting. What is the specific name given to that style of hat?

Answer: Galero

The galero is a broad-brimmed hat with tasseled strings that hang from the brim's mid-point down over the ears on both sides. The galero of a high ranking cardinal will have long (red) cords and with fifteen (red) tassels attached. The red apparel of the cardinals dates back to the thirteenth century when Innocent IV was Pope (of the Catholic Church).

It is said that Pope Innocent wanted his most trusted officials - i.e., his inner circle - to be easily recognized; thus, the red (or, scarlet) attire. Tradition also says the cardinals wear red because they have sworn total allegiance to the church even to shedding their own blood to protect the church.

By the way, the square cap (with three or four sides) that cardinals are often seen wearing is called a biretta.
9. Ah, the fads of the 1950s. Even if not an actual memory, some of those fads can be fun to learn about them. Like swallowing goldfish or shooting potatoes from "spud guns" or participating in panty raids. Take a look at the photo shown and see where twenty-five college students in South Africa stuffed themselves (inside a similar one) to set a world record - and, to start a fad of the 1950s. What is shown in the photo?

Answer: Telephone booth

The location used to attempt "record setting" events is the (red) telephone booth as is shown. Before everyone carried their own telephone with them it was not uncommon to see the pay telephone booths almost every where. Phone booths were see in many colors and designs but the most popular seemed to be red.
10. The photo shows a big red dog. There is a character in a children's book series by Norman Bridwell and an animated children's television series based on that book series. The protagonist is a very friendly, very big red dog owned by a young lady named Emily Elizabeth. The book series was originally published in 1963; the television series was initially broadcast between 2000 - 2003. What is this lovable character's name?

Answer: Clifford

"Clifford the Big Red Dog" was written and illustrated by Norman Bridwell. Mr. Bridwell had hoped to procure a job as a children's book illustrator. He developed a portfolio that included cartoons of the horse-sized red dog who belonged to a young girl based on Bridwell's own daughter (who was also named Emily Elizabeth). Bridwell eventually worked with Harper & Rowe publishing where a co-worker encouraged him to develop a story from the drawings of the big red dog and Clifford was born. Clifford the Big Red Dog has been featured in 40 best-selling children's books, two television series, a live musical and millions of dollars worth of merchandise and branding.

Not too bad for a much-rejected job application idea, huh?
