There are some basic terms to learn that you come across that help you find the right color paint. Red or true red is a primary color and the "hue" from which shades develop. "Shade" refers to the amount of black color added to a hue. While a tint is the amount of white added to the hue. Most of what we call "shades" are neither pure shades nor tints, but rather mixes of the primary colors of red blue and green. A common way to describe a color is by using the RGB color system that lists the amount of each primary colors used to create the "shade".

Cardinal is a dark shade of red that on the RGB scale is 69% red, 11% green and 20% blue. The name is derived from the color of the cassocks worn by Catholic Church Cardinals. Confusingly, the hassocks worn by Cardinals are actually a different shade of red and not cardinal. The familiar cardinal bird genus is named after the color that many (but not all) cardinals display. American baseball's St. Louis Cardinals have used the image and name of the red bird since 1900. American football's Phoenix Cardinals started play in Chicago in 1901 before moving to St. Louis in 1960 and Phoenix in 1988.

Stanford University changed its name for sports teams from the Indians to the Cardinal(s) in 1972. The "Indians" was replaced after the school had received protests from Native American groups and student groups. The cardinal name was chosen for the mascot by a vote. Burgundy is a dark shade of red associated with the color of the red wine produced in the Burgundy region of France. The RGB for the burgundy color is 82% red 0% green and 18% blue. Burgundy France is located in the eastern part of France and takes its name from the Germanic tribe, the Burgundians that settled in the region and formed a Kingdom that ruled much of the surrounding area during the 4th-6th centuries before being absorbed by the Franks.

The character of Ron Burgundy is played by Will Farrell in the 2004 movie "Anchorman: The Legends of Ron Burgundy" and the 2014 sequel "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues". Citizens of countries in the European Union are issued passports with a burgundy cover. Crimson is a dark shade of red that has an RGB of 73% red, 7% green and 20% blue. Crimson derives from the Latin word kermesinus to describe a red dye made from a kermes insect's shell. The use of kermes insects for the crimson red dye dates to Neolithic times. Harvard University's nickname is crimson based on the prominent use of the color in the school's logo. Similarly, the University of Alabama is nicknamed the Crimson Tide.

Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman squared off in the fine 1995 thriller "Crimson Tide" that depicted the clash between two US naval officers in a submarine when "mistaken" orders are given to launch a nuclear weapon. The small nectar eating Crimson sunbird is the unofficial national bird of Singapore. A wonderful example of the crimson queen variety of Japanese maple is shown in the picture.

Answer: Rust

Rust is the common name of the color of oxidized iron. The color rust is a shade of red defined in the RGB scale as 70% red, 25% green and 5% blue. The word rust comes to English from the older German word "rusta" which means redness. Canadian rock musician Neil Young released the critically and commercially powerful album entitled "Rust Never Sleeps" in 1979. The title used a popular radio and television slogan for the rust prevention paint "Rust-Oleum", and reflected Young's desire to change his musical direction and remain current to a changing music dynamic.

The rust colored flowers in the picture are a variety of mum. Mum is the more common name for the multipurpose chrysanthemum flowers. Mums are a popular annual that bloom in autumn in the Northern hemisphere fall and come in thousands of cultivars and varieties. The mum is the symbol of the Imperial House of Japan.

Ruby, the color, is named for the gemstone that is a type of corundum infused with the element chromium. All red corundum stones are called rubies. Blue corundum, formed when the stone is mixed with iron and titanium, are called sapphires. The color ruby is a dark shade of red with an RGB value of 66% red, 5% green and 28% blue.

The bright ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in "The Wizard of Oz" are housed in the US National Museum of American History. In the original book by Frank L. Baum the magic slippers were silver, the color was changed in the movie to make the shoes stand out against the yellow brick road. "Ruby Tuesday" was a 1967 number one song for the Rolling Stones released as a rare double-sided single along with "Let's Spend the Night Together". Ruby is a highly popular programming language developed in 1996 by Yukihiro Matsumoto. Pink is the color of charm and affection is often associated with young females. The color takes its name from the delicate dianthus flower genus that includes such species as the popular carnation and the sweet william. The picture here is a fine example of a dianthus armeria or Deptford pink dianthus. As a standard color pink is a light tint of red with an RBG scale of 36% red, 31% green and 33% blue.

Pink is the stage name of popular singer Alecia Beth Moore whose rousing "Get the Party Started" remains a popular dance and club tune across the globe. If you have ever suffered from gastro-intestinal distress then you are probably familiar with the Proctor and Gamble, over-the-counter, medication Pepto-Bismol. The pink emulation of bismuth subsalicylate was first sold in 1901 and acquired the "pepto" name in 1919.

Pink colored ribbons are internationally recognized as symbols of the fight against breast cancer. The familiar pink ribbon was first used in 1991 by the Susan G Komen Foundation. The charity has raised billions of dollars for research and prevention of the deadly disease that still claims nearly 500,000 lives per year world-wide

Answer: Scarlet

Scarlet is a rich deep red shade that is often associated with passion and lust. The association of scarlet with sin and sexual lust is the basis for Nathanial Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter". In most color wheels scarlet is a mix of three parts red with one part orange and has an RGB value of 88% red, 12% green and 0% blue. The picture is of a bright papaver nudicale or scarlet matador poppy one of the many varieties of flowers that can be cultivated in this shade of red.

Scarlett O'Hara is the protagonist of Margret Mitchell's epic tale of the American Civil War "Gone with the Wind". Scarlett Johansson plays the gifted assassin and undercover agent The Black Widow in the Marvel comics based Ironman and Avengers movies. Baroness Emmuska Orczy authored a play and a novel featuring the swashbuckling hero of the French Revolution known as "The Scarlett Pimpernel".

Answer: Sienna

Sienna is a red shade that is based on the color of the clay refined in the Italian city of Siena and famed during the Renaissance period for its rich earthy tone. The natural pigment is refined from clay rich in iron oxide and has a lighter tint than the same clay when heated. Often the untreated clay color is called "raw" sienna while the heated pigment is called "burnt" sienna.

Sienna Miller is an English actress who starred as the tragic model and actress and muse for Andy Warhol, Edie Sedgwick, in the 2006 film "The Factory Girl". The Toyota Sienna is a popular "minivan" first sold in 2000 primarily for the North American automotive market. The pictured flower is a sienna sunset coreopsis, a daisy-like perennial flower that grows in large groupings and is a favorite of butterflies.

Similar to the color orange, raspberry is derived from the delicious red berry fruit. The raspberry color is a red shade that mimics the most common cultivars of the fruit. The RGB mix for raspberry is 69% red, 3% green and 19% blue. A second popular shade of red called dark raspberry approximates the raspberry fruit after cooking for use in jams and sauces. The raspberry bush pictured here is the flowering stage before the plant creates the delicious berries.

"Raspberry Beret" was a light love song released by Prince (Prince Rogers Nelson) in 1985 as a stand-alone single. The song reached number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 list. Blowing a raspberry is a derogatory sound made by placing the tongue behind the lips and blowing air out of the mouth. In the US the sound is also called a "Bronx cheer" in reference to the frequency that fans of American baseball's New York Yankees (Yankee Stadium is in the Bronx Borough of New York) would greet the players on the opposing team.

Chestnut is a red shade along the brown color spectrum. The name chestnut comes from the deep rich color of the fruit of the chestnut tree. Chestnuts are cultivated across the Northern Hemisphere and are often roasted or boiled and sold by vendors in the streets of large cities. The chestnut color is found often in nature and most associated with the autumn period as exhibited by this picture from an American oak tree.

"Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" is the subtitle to the enduring "The Christmas Song" written in 1944 by Bob Wells and Mel Torme and famously recorded by Nat King Cole. For the uninitiated, each year the Nathans Hot Dog stand at New York's Coney Island hosts a hot dog (sausage) eating contest. The annual event features competitors racing to eat as many hot dogs and buns in a 10 minute period. American Joseph "Joey" Chestnut won the event in each year from 2006-2014. An "old chestnut" also refers to a story or joke that has been told frequently and is widely known by most listeners.
