Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Aces, kings, deuces, and jokers are examples of what?

Answer: cards

There are traditionally 54 playing cards, although the two jokers are removed for most games, including blackjack and poker. Aces are either considered high or low, depending on the game. In blackjack, the ace is either 1 or 11; similarly in poker, the ace can form both part of a high or low straight. Deuces refer to the number two card. Go Fish and War are other games that involve cards.
2. In Ancient Egypt, when a person died, what did the Egyptians mummify?

Answer: body

Mummification, the process of drying out one's body, was done in the belief that it would keep a person's spirit alive. The Egyptians would get rid of the brain and not mummify it, since they believed it was of little or no importance. The other internal organs would be put in canopic jars with lids that had the shape of the four sons of Horus.

The entire process would take 70 days: 40 days removing organs and dehydrating the body, and 30 days pretty much undoing everything that had just been done in an attempt to make the dead become semi-divine.
3. How many muses were there in Greek mythology?

Answer: nine

The nine muses of Greek mythology were Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia, and Urania. Muses were goddesses of the arts and are usually considered children of Zeus. Their inspiration to artists is where the modern usage of the word "muse" came from.

The muses were mentioned in several ancient books, including "The Odyssey", "The Inferno" and "The Aeneid".
4. In "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", how did Harry get to Hogsmeade for the first time?

Answer: secret passage

Harry's uncle Vernon refused to sign Harry's letter, after Harry blew up his Aunt Marge, so Harry was left at Hogwarts while his friends, Ron and Hermione, were allowed to visit Hogsmeade. Fred and George Weasley provided Harry with a gift, the Marauder's Map, which allowed Harry to see everyone and everything within Hogwarts. Fred and George pointed out a secret passage that led Harry to the basement of a store in Hogsmeade. Harry used this information to sneak into Hogsmeade undetected.
5. On the United States flag, which color stands for purity?

Answer: white

The white stripes on the United States flag stand for purity. Red and blue are referred to as "Old Glory Red" and "Old Glory Blue", but white is simply referred to as white.

There are six white stripes. Along with the seven red stripes, these thirteen stripes represent the original thirteen colonies. One theory on why white (and red) were chosen for stripe colors was because George Washington's family coat of arms was a white shield with two red bars and three red stars. The stars on the flag are also white.
6. In a popular nursery rhyme, what object did Jack jump over?

Answer: candlestick

In the nursery rhyme "Jack Be Nimble", Jack jumped over a candlestick. Its recorded origins were in 1815, and back then jumping over a candlestick was a form of fortune telling. The nursery rhyme is usually learned as "Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack jump over the candlestick".

The Jack in the nursery rhyme was possible referring to a pirate called Black Jack Smatt, who was known for being quick and easily escaping those who wanted to hang him.
7. What yellow condiment do people sometimes put on food?

Answer: mustard

Mustard is the popular yellow condiment that can be found on food. The Romans were most likely the first to use mustard, but it eventually spread across the world. It is considered one of the most, if not the most, popular condiment and spice. In the US, mustard is most commonly used on hot dogs or hamburgers but can be put on just about several different type of food, such as sandwiches.
8. What color is associated with St. Patrick's Day?

Answer: green

The color green is associated with St. Patrick's Day, because St. Patrick came from Ireland, and the color associated with Ireland is green. St. Patrick used a shamrock to teach others about the Holy Trinity in the fifth century. About two centuries later, people started celebrating him. Since shamrocks are green, this provided another reason to have green be associated with St. Patrick's Day.
9. In the ancient world, what could be found in the city of Alexandria, noteworthy because it was the largest of its kind?

Answer: library

In Alexandria, Egypt, a person could find the largest and most significant library in the ancient world. However, the exact size of the library is unknown. It was built in either the 300s B.C. or the 200s B.C. Because of its size, it was considered the center for the world's knowledge.

The people working there did their best to get a complete history of everything. It is unknown how or when the library was destroyed, but there are a few theories. One somewhat popular theory is that Julius Caesar accidentally burned it down.
