Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In William Shakespeare's "Macbeth", Macbeth and Lady Macbeth frame ________ for King Duncan's murder by smearing his blood on their faces while they are passed out.

Answer: The chamberlains

Macbeth and his wife Lady Macbeth got the two chamberlains drunk and while they were passed out, Macbeth killed the King. Afterwards, Macbeth was too terrified to return to the King's room, so Lady Macbeth went instead and smeared the King's blood on their faces so that it would look as though they were the murderers.
2. If a matrix has the dimensions 2x3, what exactly does this mean?

Answer: The matrix has 2 rows and 3 columns

A matrix is an arrangement of data and has a rectangular shape. The dimensions of a matrix determine how many rows and columns that a matrix has.
3. Which United States President is famous for his Fourteen Points plan during World War I?

Answer: Woodrow Wilson

Wilson laid out the Fourteen Points plan before World War I had ended. The plan seemed like a great idea at the time but were never incorporated into the Treaty of Versailles.
4. When the Articles of Confederation proved to be a failure for the United States, the U.S. Constitution was proposed. Those who supported the Constitution were called ___________ and those who did not support the Constitution were called___________.

Answer: federalists and anti-federalists

The anti-federalists did not support the Constitution because there was nothing in it that guaranteed the rights of the people. They said that they would ratify the Constitution only if once it was adopted, it was changed to include a Bill of Rights, which it was.

Strict and loose constructionists came about when the idea for a National Bank was proposed by Alexander Hamilton. Strict constructionists, such as Thomas Jefferson, opposed the National Bank under the argument that there was nothing in the Constitution that said a National Bank could be created. Loose constructionists however used the Elastic Clause (which says that the government can do whatever is necessary and proper to run the country) to justify a National Bank.
5. When using commands in the Spanish language, what is the correct way to tell a person to "speak". (Use the usted form)

Answer: Hable

Here are the steps to determine the correct form:
1) Put the verb in the "Yo" form, present tense
2)Drop the "o" and add the opposite vowel (this means that if the verb ends in "ar" add an "e" and if the verb ends in "er" or "ir" add an "a")
3)When using "Ustedes" instead of "Usted" add an "n" to the end

It should look like this:
Hablar > Hablo > Hable (If using Ustedes it would be Hablen)
6. The Periodic Table is made up of 18 groups. Some of these groups have specific names given to them because of the elements in the group. What name is given to group 2 of the Periodic Table?

Answer: alkaline earth metals

There are six alkaline earth metal elements in group 2 of the Periodic Table. Those elements are Beryllium (Be), Magnesium (Mg), Calcium (Ca), Strontium (Sr), Barium (Ba) and Radium (Ra). The Chalcogens are group 16, the Halogens are group 17 and the Noble Gases are group 18.
7. Since Gym (or Wellness as my school calls it) is a required course that I have to take, I will ask a sports question: In basketball, when a player is taking free throws, only so many people are allowed to occupy the free throw lane. Those players who are not in the free throw lane must remain behind what?

Answer: the three-point line

In the free throw lane, only members of the team opposing the free throw shooter can fill the spots nearest the end line. Members of the same team as the shooter can fill the next two spots. Though there are two spots after that, only one can be filled if the player so chooses and that player can only be from the opposite team of the free throw shooter.
8. In Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre", what shocking detail about Mr. Rochester is exposed on his and Jane's wedding day?

Answer: he is keeping his maniac wife locked in the 3rd floor of his home

On the day that Mr. Rochester and Jane were to be wed, Mr. Mason showed up and stopped the wedding, saying that Rochester was still married to his, Mr. Mason's, sister. Rochester and Jane returned to Thornfield where Rochester showed Jane his lunatic wife. Jane had thought that Grace Poole was the crazy one but it turned out that Grace had been the caretaker of Rochester's wife.
9. The first woman to become a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court was sworn in, in what year?

Answer: 1981

Sandra Day O'Connor became the first woman to be a Justice of the U.S. Supreme court when she was sworn in September of 1981. O'Connor had been nominated by the then President Ronald Reagan. The U.S. Supreme Court consists of 9 Justices who are on the court for life.
