Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the fairy tale 'Jack and the Beanstalk', which bird laid a golden egg?

Answer: Hen

In the story by the Brothers Grimm, Jack made two trips to the home of the ogre. On his first trip he stole gold coins which were soon spent. On his second trip he snatched the little hen, his mother looked disparagingly at it until she realised it laid golden eggs.
2. I am a famous literary parrot. I sit on the shoulder of which of these sea faring characters?

Answer: Long John Silver

Of course I'm belonging to Long John Silver, we go everywhere together. What would Stevenson's book be without my line 'pieces of eight'. Long John is even described in bird fashion, 'having a crutch which he used with great dexterity hopping about on it like a bird'.
3. Which bird gave its name to the first known resident of 10 Downing Street?

Answer: Mr. Chicken

Mr. Chicken lived there at the turn of the nineteenth century, according to a web site which shows some of the art and decor inside this famous building.
4. What sporting bird is found on the shirt front of French rugby players?

Answer: Cockerel

This is taken from the UK Independent Oct 2003.
Diomede, the French mascot, was sent home suffering from depression. He had attended all the training sessions but was missing his hens according to player Patrick Tabacco. So just before the World Cup began Diomede was sent packing back to a farm near Brisbane.
That's life!
5. A single magpie is often seen as a harbinger of bad luck. According to the rhyme what would seeing seven magpies mean?

Answer: A secret

This is the rhyme.
One for sorrow.
Two for joy.
Three for a girl.
Four for a boy.
Five for silver.
Six for gold.
Seven for a secret that's never told.
6. I am a Kori Bustard from Africa and I hold the record of the heaviest bird in flight. What did I weigh?

Answer: 42 lbs.

This information comes from a very interesting website called www.theamazingworldofbirds.
7. 'A pigeon for a pigeon'. In which classic film noir do pigeons play an integral role?

Answer: On the Waterfront

Danny Boy, the pigeon, lures Joey Doyle to his death. Pigeons are easy prey for hawks, which act as a metaphor for the exploitation of the dockers. Turning pigeon is to inform. When Terry talks to the Waterfront Commission, a young boy who hero worshipped him killed all the pigeons uttering this line.
8. Which bird was tied around the Ancient Mariner's neck?

Answer: Albatross

'It was an ancient Mariner
And he stoppeth one of three'.
What an amazing tale unfolds for the wedding guest in Coleridge's eerie poem.
9. Which bird stands on top of the statue 'The Bremen Musicians'?

Answer: Rooster

This comes from one of Grimm's tales. The statue depicts a rooster on top of a cat, on top of a dog, on top of a donkey. This is a very funny tale which tells what happens when these musicians sing to the robbers in the forest.
10. Chaunticleer 'the handsomest best educated and most perceptive rooster yet seen in life or literature' features in which of these works?

Answer: The Canterbury Tales

Chaunticleer is a delightful parody on the aristocracy of the day. Chaucer shows their love of talking, their hifallutin' attitude, at times being out of touch with reality. It is all done with such a light hand as to be hilarious.
