Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Literature: Which 'I' was a prolific author and Academy Award winning screenwriter who famously played by cider house rules?

Answer: John Irving

John Irving (birth name John Blunt Jr) was born in New Hampshire in 1942.

His first three novels, "Setting Free The Bears" (1968); "The Water-Method Man" (1972); and "The 158-Pound Marriage" (1974), were well liked by the critics, but were poor sellers.

His fourth novel, "The World According to Garp" (1978), was to change things. It became an international bestseller, and was made into a movie.

Several more books were also made into movies, and "The Hotel New Hampshire" (1981), "The Cider House Rules" (1985), "A Widow for One Year" (1998), and "The Fourth Hand" all topped the New York Times bestsellers list.
2. Movies: Which 'I' was an Academy Award winning movie that brought the story of detective Virgil Tibbs to the silver screen?

Answer: In The Heat Of The Night

Based on John Ball's 1965 novel, "In The Heat Of The Night" won five Oscars in 1967.

As well as the Best Picture accolade, Rod Steiger won for Best Actor.

In the original novel, Virgil Tibbs is an African/American detective working in Philadelphia who gets involved in a murder investigation while travelling through Mississippi. The movie changed some of his back story and details of the murder.

In the movie, Sidney Poitier plays Tibbs and Steiger plays Police Chief Bill Gillespie. When a wealthy local businessman is murdered, the chief suspects a transient person killed him. Tibbs, who just happens to be sitting at 3am waiting for a train, is arrested on suspicion of murder.

After the chief is satisfied he has the wrong man, Tibbs is released, but the businessman's widow asks him to help find the real killer.
3. Music: Which 'I' was a song by a New Jersey born Rat Pack singer that was voted number nine in a list of the top 100 songs of all time?

Answer: I've Got You Under My Skin

"I've Got You Under My Skin" was number nine in the list created by the Daily Telegraph (London) in November 2016.

Cole Porter wrote the song in 1936 and Virginia Bruce sang it in the MGM musical "Born to Dance".

Frank Sinatra began singing the song on his weekly radio show in 1946, but made it his own by adding a big band arrangement in the mid 1950s.

Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt, Sammy Davis Jr., Carly Simon, Michael Buble, Michael Bolton, and Deana Martin. In 1966, The Four Seasons had a top ten hit with the song.

Incidentally, number one on that list was "Life On Mars?" by David Bowie.
4. People: Famous women: Which 'I' was the first female prime minister of India?

Answer: Indira Gandhi

Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (née Nehru) was born in November 1917 and was assassinated in October 1984.

Her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, was a political activist and became India's first prime minster.

Indira was educated in India and in Europe and later married Feroze Gandhi (no relation to the great Mohandas Gandhi.)

She entered politics in the late 1950s and served as prime minister at various times between 1966 and 1984.
She had a turbulent political career, facing financial challenges at home and a war against Pakistan.
Defeated at the 1977 elections, she was jailed a year later for corruption.

Upon her release, she was again victorious in elections and became prime minister again in 1980.

Over the next few years, she came under increasing pressure from factions within India. On her orders, the Indian Army confronted Sikh separatists at the sacred Golden Temple in Armitsar. Officially, several hundred died. Unofficial figures put the date toll much higher.

In October 1984, Gandhi was shot and killed by two of her bodyguards, both Sikhs, in retribution for the attack at the Golden Temple.
5. Religion: Which 'I' was an Old Testament prophet who declared 'how beautiful upon the mountain are the steps of those who walk in peace' but personally met a rather grisly end?

Answer: Isaiah

If you did not recognise the exact order of words here, this is the Tom Paxton version of Isaiah 52:7.

As the New International Version puts it: "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace..."

The Book of Isaiah was written between 740 BCE and 686 BCE. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest prophets of the Bible and told of the prophecies that God had given to him.

Very little is known about his life, though it is believed that he was married to a prophetess, lived in Jerusalem, and had two sons. He was killed by being sawn in two by King Manasseh.
6. Science: Computers and technology: Which 'I' is not part of the Apple family of products?

Answer: iStar

The iMac came first, then the iBook and then the iPad.

ISTAR: Information, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance, is a process of gathering information together on a battlefield.
7. Sports: Which 'I' is a sport that requires participants to hurl an object across a specified distance in the fewest number of attempts?

Answer: Irish Road Bowling

In the sport, participants compete to throw a metal ball of about the size of a tennis ball along a certain distance of roadway.

Although there is a controlling body and set rules, no special course is needed - any stretch of public road will do. (Preferably when there is no traffic on it - and there is unlikely to be since large crowds often line the verges of the mainly country roads where it is played.)

As in golf, the winner is the participant who gets the 28 ounce ball along the specified length in the fewest attempts.
8. Television: What 'I' was a television game show that first aired in the USA and was later adapted for Australian TV?

Answer: It's Academic

In the USA, "It's Academic" first aired in 1961. It involved teams of three from competing high schools answering general knowledge and specific subject rounds of questions.

In Australia, the first shows were broadcast in 1968 and 1969 on Network 10. It was revived on a number of occasions on differing networks.
9. Video Games: What 'I' was a demon hunter who became a demon and has featured in a top 50 list of the best video games characters of all time?

Answer: Illidan Stormrage

Illidan Stormrage first appeared in "Warcraft III" (aka "Reign of Chaos")in 2002.

The character began to appear more strongly in the "World of Warcraft" offshoot, "The Burning Crusade", 2007.

Illidan had the appearance of a winged demon.

The character was at number 17 in "Empire" magazine's "50 Greatest Video Game Characters" in 2010.
10. World: Flags and symbols: Which 'I' is a country that has a flag of green, white and red vertical stripes?

Answer: Italy

The flag has three equally sized vertical stripes of green, white, and red, with the green next to the flagpole.

The current flag was formally adopted in 1948, although a tricolour style and the red, white and green colours have been used in variants of a flag over the years from about 1794.

Interesting in the loosest possible terms information: In 2012 a Northern Ireland "victims' campaigner" was forced to apologise to a school over derogatory remarks he made when he mistook a green, white, and red Italian flag it was flying at a cultural event for a green, white, and orange Irish flag. (For those unfamiliar with the semantics of Northern Ireland politics, for a certain proportion of the population, the green, white, and orange Irish tricolour is like a red rag to a bull - just as the red, white, and blue British Union flag is to another proportion of the populace.)
