Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals: What E is an animal that never forgets?

Answer: Elephant

Elephants are indigenous to Africa and to Asia. There are subtle differences in appearance between the two. Asian elephants are smaller than their near-cousins, with smaller ears. It is also said, perhaps anecdotally, that while Asian elephants can be trained to assist humans in tasks such as logging, African elephants are untrainable.

As to that belief that elephants are afraid of mice, there is no scientific evidence to back it up.
2. Brain Teasers: (Common words) What E could represent a bird of prey; a British boys' comic of the 1950s and '60s; and a ghost town in Utah?

Answer: Eagle

A number of species of 'eagle' are to be found on all continents, except Antarctica.
The 'Eagle' was an adventure comic published from 1958 to 1969, with a digital relaunch in 1984. Among its most popular creations was 'Dan Dare', a space pilot.
Eagle City is a gold mining camp established in 1890 in the Henry Mountains of southern Utah. It was almost completely abandoned within 30 years.
3. Celebrities: Which E, a radio and television personality, revved up in 2016 as the new lead presenter of the world's most-watched factual television show?

Answer: Chris Evans

Chris Evans stepped in to replace Jeremy Clarkson at the helm of the BBC's "Top Gear". In 2013, 'Guinness World Records' named "Top Gear" as the most-watched factual TV show in the world. It was shown in 212 countries. Clarkson's contract was not renewed after an incident in which he punched one of the show's producers in an argument over the non-availability of hot food after a day's filming.
4. Entertainment: (Coasters and Theme Parks) What E was an amusement ride with a sci-fi theme?

Answer: Enterprise

The first "Enterprise" was introduced in 1972. Typically, each installation had up to 20 cabins, that each held two people, and which moved around a giant circle. The people were held in place by centrifugal force. They were named after the Starship Enterprise that featured in the original "Star Trek" television series.
5. For Children: What E was a red furry monster that first appeared in "Sesame Street"?

Answer: Elmo

Elmo first appeared in the early 1970s and was voiced by several actors over the years. Elmo was also a regular on the TV talkshow circuit and appeared in the drama "The West Wing". That had the President's wife appearing on "Sesame Street".
6. General Knowledge: What E is a gemstone by which Ireland is also often known?

Answer: Emerald

Ireland is sometimes known as "the Emerald Isle" because of the large number of shades of green that can be seen there. Emeralds are gems that had been mined since ancient times. In the modern world, Columbia became the largest producer.
7. Geography: What E is the geographical term for a district that lies outside a city's limits?

Answer: Exurb

The exurbs are usually even farther out than the suburbs. (No, I had never heard the term either, until I researched this quiz. If you genuinely had - and not just guessed - please contact a geography editor to claim 100 bonus points.)
8. History: (Disasters): What E was the place in Colorado where a train crash in 1904 claimed the lives of 97 people?

Answer: Eden

No. 11 Missouri Pacific Flyer from Denver, Colorado to St Louis, Missouri was in the wrong place at the wrong time when it crossed a bridge over a dry creek at Eden, near Pueblo, Colorado. There had been predictions of a thunderstorm and after the locomotive crossed the bridge, a freak wave struck several carriages.

The coupling to the rear of the train was broken and, by quick thinking, the Pullman porter applied the emergency brakes, saving the lives of those to the rear.
9. Hobbies:(Crafts) What E involves such techniques as bean stitches, bird nesting, and condensed fill?

Answer: Embroidery

For centuries, people have been using needles and threads to decorate clothes and make clothes and patterns. Many people on here may be familiar with homes that have embroidered 'samplers' including messages, proverbs and biblical passages. The most famous embroidered cloth of all, though, may probably be the Bayeux Tapestry.

At 70 feet long, it portrays historical events leading up to the Norman Conquest of England in the 11th Century. There is some debate on when the work was started, and by whom it was ordered.

It may have been started as early as 1082.
10. Humanities: What E is a grammatical device used to indicate that words are missing in a sentence, story or statement?

Answer: Ellipsis

An ellipsis looks like three dots (aka periods or full stops) in a row. It can be used at the beginning, middle or end of a sentence, or so a quick internet search informed me...
An ellipsis can also be used in mathematics to indicate that numbers have been left out.
11. Literature: What E is an American crime fiction writer who may well have liked some black dahlias in his flower vases?

Answer: James Ellroy

Ellroy was born in California in 1948. Some of his best-known books includ "The Black Dahlia" (published in 1987); "L.A. Confidential" (1990), and "American Tabloid" (1995). "The Black Dahlia" and "L.A. Confidential" were both made into movies.
12. Movies: Which E won four Academy Awards and was the highest grossing movie of 1982?

Answer: E.T. - The Extraterrestrial

In fact "ET" became the highest grossing movie of all time and held that record for 11 years. The movie went on to gross more than $790 million in worldwide sales. This was the story of an alien being - an extraterrestrial - who was left behind by a team of others from his own world when they were disturbed by a group of federal agents.

He was found hiding in a shed by a young boy who befriended him. They became pals and the boy helped his new buddy make a communicator to get in touch with his own people.

The movie was a proper tear-jerker, and I would not possibly spoil the plot by telling you how it ended.
13. Music: What E were Bruce Springsteen's backing group?

Answer: E Street Band

The E Street Band formed in 1972 and played that year on Springsteen's debut album. "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J."
The band's name came from the address in Belmar, New Jersey, where they first rehearsed in a garage. The Boss and the band recorded and toured until 1989, when Springsteen said he would no longer use them. They reunited in 1999.
14. People: Which E was a man whose arrest in 1962 brought the Christine Keeler/Lord Profumo scandal into the open?

Answer: Johnny Edgecombe

Born in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda in 1932, Edgecombe settled in London where he ran a drink and drugs shebeeen. He lived with Keeler for a time, but she ended the relationship because of his jealousy. (Keeler was involved with a number of men during this period of the 1960s, including John Porfumo, the Minister for War, and Yevgeny Ivanov, a Russian naval attaché.) Edgecombe was arrested in December 1962 after firing shots at the door of a flat where Keeler was hiding out with Stephen Ward. That arrest brought down a house of cards and an infamous trial followed. Profumo was forced to resign as Minister, not for having an affair with Keeler, but because he lied about it.

After a period in prison, Edgecombe became a jazz club proprietor and published a book abut the Profumo/Keeler scandal in 2002.

He died in September 2010.
15. Religion: Which E was a Christian saint and martyr who died from wounds inflicted by a bear?

Answer: Euphemia

Saint Euphemia died in about 303 AD. She was a pious woman who was arrested for refusing to make sacrifices to the deity Ares. Her martyrdom came when she was put into an arena and thrown to the lions. Accounts say the lions refused to attack her, but licked her wounds instead. She was killed, though, by a bear.
16. Sci/Tech: (Environment) Which E was first celebrated on April 22, 1970 and annually on that date thereafter?

Answer: Earth Day

The annual event aims to show commitment to protecting the environment of our planet.
17. Sports: (Soccer) What E was the first name of a France international who famously jumped into a crowd of spectators to launch a karate kick at one who had abused him?

Answer: Eric

Eric Cantona was a flamboyant and very skilful player who played club football in his native land and in England. He scored 139 goals in 369 club appearances and 20 in 45 international games. Cantona had a fiery temperament and in January 1995 was sent off for kicking a Crystal Palace defender.

As he left the pitch, Cantona went into the crowd and and launched a 'kung-fu' style kick at a Crystal Palace fan who had run down 11 rows of stairs to shout abuse.
18. Television: What E was a British television soap set in rural Yorkshire?

Answer: Emmerdale

"Emmerdale" was first broadcast as a daytime soap called "Emmerdale Farm" in 1972. Initially, this was the story of a typical farming family and dealt with their everyday - often humdrum - lives. In later years - especially after "Farm" was dropped from the title in 1989 - the show became much more racy.

It did also cover serious issues, such as drug use among teenagers, cancer, HIV and historical child abuse.
19. Video Games: Which E was one of the leading characters in season one of "The Walking Dead"?

Answer: Lee Everett

Everett featured in five episodes. His role was to protect one of the leading female characters from zombies. Dave Fennoy provided the voice. The game first appeared in 2012 and was based on a comic book of the same name.
20. World: (Military Matters) What E was the original name for a jet fighter that eventually entered service with several European air forces as the 'Typhoon'?

Answer: Eurofighter

Design work on a new fighter jet to serve a number of European air forces began in 1983. The countries involved were UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, although France was to leave the consortium and develop its own fighter. The first prototype Eurofighter flew in 1994.

In 1998 the name 'Typhoon' was adopted, not without controversy since 'Typhoon' was also the name of a very effective allied attack aircraft in the latter part of World War II. The Typhoon entered service in 2003 with the air forces of the consortium nations that had jointly planned and built it - as well as Austria and several Middle East countries.

The Typhoon was a multi-role aircraft, capable of aerial combat, as well as air-to-ground attacks.
