Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Dutch city was besieged for seven months during the Eighty Years War with Spain?

Answer: Haarlem

Haarlem was a strategically important city halfway across the then western province of Holland. Taking it would split the province in two. And on July 13, 1573, the Spanish finally did just that. The soldiers who defended the city, were tied together and thrown into the Spaarne river.

The other cities mentioned are like Haarlem all located in the province of North-Holland, Heemskerk being my hometown.
2. At what English cricket ground would you find the Kirkstall Lane End and Football Stand End?

Answer: Headingley

Headingley is the home of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club and has a capacity of 14,000.
3. What is the fear of feeling pleasure called?

Answer: Hedonophobia

Fooled? Well, heterophobia is the fear of the opposite sex. No fun there I'm afraid, hadephobia is the fear of hell and hamartophobia is the fear of sinning. Which in a way could be considered a form of hedonophobia if you ask me.
4. In the nineteenth century he was a Union general, in this day and age he works between props. What or who am I talking about?

Answer: Hooker

General Hooker did battle with the Confederates at the cornfield at Antietam and was the commander on the receiving end at Chancellorsville. A hooker between props plays Rugby Union (that's rugby with 15 players)
5. Here's an easy question for you. Which director was called The Master of Suspense? (surname will do)

Answer: Hitchcock

The list of filmhits he has made is far too long. I'll just mention 'North by Northwest', 'Vertigo' and 'Psycho'.
6. One of my all time favorite shows is 'Heimat', a series about a family in twentieth century Germany. In which region did this (fictional) family live?

Answer: Hunsruck

The Hunsruck borders with the northwest of France to give you an idea about its location. Hessen lies more to the east, and Hannover and Hamburg are cities.
7. Who is the famous naval hero in CS Forester's books?

Answer: Horatio Hornblower

Forester wrote a whole series of books about this character, who started as a midshipman and ended up a Lord. Gregory Peck played him as a captain in a 1951 film.
8. Which British warship was sunk during the pursuit of and the battle with the Bismarck?

Answer: Hood

The HMS Hood was a mighty battleship, but vulnerable as it had too little armour-plating. So when unfortunately one grenade of the Bismarck hit the Hood where the ammunition was stored, the ship was blown up. Of the 1,477 crew only three survived.
9. What is Croatia called, in the Croatian language?

Answer: Hrvatska

It should have been an easy question. Hellas is Greece for the Greeks, Helvetia is Switzerland and when you talk about Hibernia, you should have Ireland on your mind.
10. He, Constantyn, was well-known in Holland as a statesman and a poet. His son Christiaan however was internationally famous as a scientist. What was the surname of these two Dutchmen?

Answer: Huygens

Christaan Huygens did many great things as a scientist like discovering the Saturn satellite Titan, discovering the rings around Saturn and founding the theory of light, to name but a few. He died in 1695, 66 years old, surviving his father (1596-1687) for just eight years.
