Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In English, how many countries' names contain the letter "X"?

Answer: Two

In English, only two countries have the letter "X" in their names: Mexico and Luxembourg, and there are no countries' names that begin with an "X".

However, in Catalan language, the national language of Andorra, the names of three countries begin with the letter "X": Xina (China), Xile (Chile) and Xipre (Cyprus). In the Galician language, which is a language derived from Latin and mainly spoken in the Galician region of Spain, the names of five countries also begin with the letter "X": Xamaica (Jamaica), Xapon (Japan), Xeorgia (Georgia), Xibouti (Djibouti) and Xordania (Jordan).
2. Where can a "Xylem" be found?

Answer: In a plant

"Xylem" is found in all vascular plants. Its function is to transport water and nutrients from the roots to other parts of the plant and also serves as a support for the plants. It is a set of specialized cells known as tracheary. In these plants there is also the phloem, which is the tissue that conducts sugar from the leaves to the rest of the plant.

The word "Xylem" is derived from the Greek word "xylon" that means wood.
3. Xylitol is used as a substitute for which of these substances?

Answer: Sugar

Xylitol is a colorless water-soluble white crystalline solid chemical, classified as polyalcohol and a sugar alcohol. It is used as a substitute for sugar and as a food additive. It occurs in small amounts in some plants such as plums, cauliflower, strawberries and pumpkins. Its industrial production is based on xylan, extracted from discarded biomass.

Xylitol normally is not used in the home. It is commonly used as a sugar substitute in the manufacture of medicines, food supplements, chewing gum, toothpaste and also in saline solutions for nasal irrigation.
4. What kind of animal is a "Xerus"?

Answer: A mammal

The "Xerus", also known as the African ground squirrel, is a mammal belonging to the order Rodentia and is distributed in four species that inhabit savannas and areas of deserts and rocks. They are covered with coarse and short hair, from head to toe, but the feet have less hair than the other body parts; in general their color is light brownish. Their ears are small and although they have long and curved claws, they do not allow the animal to climb the trees. An adult animal weighs 0.5 to 1.0 kg and is 20.3 to 46.3 cm long, excluding its tail.

Although xerus are gregarious animals, males live in groups separate from female groups. Males and females just come together to mate and the pups live with the mother group. They basically feed on roots, seeds and nuts. Unlike other squirrels they don't live in trees and don't keep steady storage. They often use their tail as shade from the sun.
5. Three of these four "X" cities are located in China. Which one is a Mozambican city?

Answer: Xai-Xai

Xai-Xai or Xai Xai is a port town in the Republic of Mozambique, capital of the Gaza Province and has about 120,000 inhabitants. It is located on the banks of the Limpopo River close to the Indian Ocean, being 200km from the capital Maputo. Its main economic activity is the cultivation of rice and cashew nuts.

It was founded in 1897 under the name Chai-Chai and was elevated to the category of village in 1911. Under Portuguese rule it was named João Belo and developed as a companion port to Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), an agricultural and industrial center (processing of agricultural products, mainly rice and cashew nuts). After independence from Portugal in 1975, it returned to being Xai-Xai with a new spelling.
6. Saint Francis Xavier was a Catholic missionary. He was a co-founder of what religious order?

Answer: Jesuits

Francisco de Jasso y Azpilicueta, known as Francis Xavier (1506-1552), was born in Javier (Xavier in Old Spanish), Spain. In 1534 with Ignatius of Loyola and five companions, he took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience to the pope. In 1540 they founded the "Society of Jesus" with the approval of Pope Paul III. Members of this order are known as Jesuits and are expected to accept orders to go anywhere in the world where they can be of help.

Francis led evangelism missions especially in Asia. He was the first Christian missionary to go to Japan, Borneo and other Asian areas. He did great work in India and passed away in St. John's Island, China. He was canonized in 1622 and is known as one of the great apostles since Paul the Apostle. In 2013, Jorge Mario Bergoglio became Pope Francis, head of the Catholic Church, the first Jesuit Pope.
7. In 1910, the writer Edith Wharton published a collection of short stories named "Xingu and Other Stories". "Xingu" has become one of her most popular and funny tales; in it, one of the participants mentions the word "Xingu". What kind of thing was she referring to?

Answer: A Brazilian river

The tale "Xingu" is a satire about a group of snobby middle and upper-class women and a snobby guest. One of the ladies, who was discriminated against by the others, told the guest that the group was studying about "Xingu". The truth is that neither the guest nor the other members of the group had any idea what Xingu meant but everyone pretended to know. The person was referring to the Xingu River, one of the tributaries of the Amazon River, and the peoples that inhabit its banks.

The Xingu River, 1,870 km long, originates in the state of Mato Grosso and flows to the North of the country until it meets, in the state of Pará, the Amazon River, which is one of the tributaries on the right bank.
8. Xenon is a chemical element with the symbol Xe and atomic number 54.

Answer: True

"Xenon" is a colorless, odorless and dense noble gas with the symbol Xe and atomic number 54. It is a rare element and its extraction from Earth's atmosphere is expensive. This gas was discovered in England by chemists William Ramsay and Morris Travers in 1898.

The word "xenon" was suggested by William Ramsay from the Greek word xénon, neuter singular form of xénos meaning "strange", "guest" or "foreign". This gas has several uses, including light-emitting devices, lasers and medical uses.
9. The abbreviation "Xmas" to represent Christmas is a neologism created by commercial companies.

Answer: False

The expression Xmas or "X-mass" dates from the mid-1500s with X representing "chi", the initial letter from the word Christ in Greek. The word "-mas" comes from the Old English "mass", which refers to a religious service, especially of the Roman Catholic Church. Mass would have its origin in the Latin "missa", from "mittere" which means "to send". At the end of the ceremony the priest says "it, missa est" meaning "go, it is the dismissal".

This expression has been a source of disagreement among Christians as some believe that X does not refer to Christ but to something unknown.
10. "Generation X" is the name given to the American generation born in what period of time?

Answer: 1965 to 1985

"Generation X" or "Gen X" is the demographic cohort that followed from "Baby Boomers Generation" (1946 to 1964) and preceded the "Millennials Generation" (1985 to 2000). The exact date of the beginning year of generations varies according to demographers and research institutes. The classification of the population into generational groups assumes that people born in the same period tend to have similar values, habits, tastes and points of view.

The term was coined in 1953 by Robert Capa referring to people who were young adults in the years following World War II. But later the it was applied to a different group, the group we now consider as "Generation X", a change made because of Coupland's novel published in 1986 "Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture". The X'ers were born and raised in the period 1965-1985, a time of great social and technological changes, without much parental supervision and various economic crises. It is a generation that had to face rising costs of education, healthcare and housing.

The study of generational groups is very important for governments and for companies, to prepare themselves to meet the needs of their users.

Now that you've finished playing this quiz, see what generation you belong to and what are your group's characteristics.
