The Hope Diamond is believed to have originated in India, and was owned at various times by several monarchs of France and, possibly, by a king of England. He published a follow up, 'Rupert of Hentzau', in 1898, and both books have been adapted for film on several occasions. He wrote many other novels, but the Ruritanian ones are the best remembered and gave their name to a particular genre. 'The Woodlanders' was by Thomas Hardy, 'Catriona' by Robert Louis Stevenson and 'The Invisible Man' by H. G. Wells, all of them being published in the late nineteenth century.
6. Hope Harbour can be found in which of these places, the site of a twentieth century war?

The Englishness of the name should have helped, as the Falkland Islands have been British since 1833. Ownership is also claimed by Argentina, who call the islands Malvinas, a dispute which led to the brief war between Britain and Argentina in 1982. Hope Harbour is situated on the island of West Falkland and is classed as an 'Important Bird Area' due to its colonies of Gentoo Penguins and the endangered Black-browed Albatross.

Hope's partnership with Bing Crosby in the 'Road to' films was successful, and he also performed for American troops abroad on numerous occasions. Bob Hope died in 2003, soon after reaching the milestone of one hundred years of age.
8. The expression 'hope springs eternal' was created by Alexander Pope. In which part of the human body does he say hope originates?

Answer: Breast

The words come from Pope's poem 'An Essay on Man', published in 1734. The full couplet is 'hope springs eternal in the human breast; man never is, but always to be blessed', and the poem also includes the lines 'the proper study of mankind is man'. Among Pope's other works are 'An Essay on Criticism' and 'The Rape of the Lock'.
9. Dusty Springfield took the song 'Wishin' and Hopin'' into the charts in 1964. It was originally written for Dionne Warwick by which prolific songwriting duo?

Answer: Bacharach and David

Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote many songs for Dionne Warwick and 'Wishin' and Hopin'' originally appeared on the B-side (remember those?) of 'This Empty Place', released in 1963. Dusty Springfield then recorded the song, which reached the US Billboard Hot 100 at a high of number six.

It wasn't released as a single in the UK as Dusty was already in the charts with 'I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself'. The other duos listed were also prolific songwriters of the time.
10. The 1970 film 'The Great White Hope' featured which of these sports?

Answer: Boxing

The film starred James Earl Jones as Jack Jefferson and was based on the play of the same name by Howard Sackler, who also wrote the screenplay. The story was loosely based on the real life boxer Jack Johnson, a black boxer who held the World Heavyweight title.

The film title refers to the search for a white boxer to defeat Jefferson, amid the racial prejudice of the early twentieth century.
