Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", which species of creature escaped from the Earth shortly before its destruction, leaving only the message "So long, and thanks for all the fish"?

Answer: Dolphins

This, according to Adams, only went to prove that dolphins were far more intelligent than humans thought. He subsequently used the phrase as the title of the fourth novel in the "Hitchhiker" series of books.

Question by stedman, who is very thankful for the hours of pleasure Douglas Adams' works have given him over the years.
2. Psalm 100:4 remains one of the most well-known Biblical references to being thankful. What word completes the sentence in the King James Version? "Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with" what?

Answer: praise

Psalm 100 is the only Psalm that bears the title which can be translated "A Psalm of Thanksgiving". It is commonly sung as part of worship services in both Christian and Jewish gatherings. The Psalm was penned by King David during his reign.

This thankful reflection is sung to you by DarrelDow.
3. "From too much love of living, From hope and fear set free, We thank with brief thanksgiving Whatever gods may be That no life lives for ever, That dead men rise up never, That even the weariest river Winds somewhere safe to sea." Which Victorian poet, notorious in his day but largely forgotten now, penned these lines in "The Garden of Proserpine"?

Answer: Algernon Charles Swinburne

When Swinburne's "Poems and Ballads" were published in 1866, they were immediately attacked by many critics for their apparent frontal assault on Christian belief and accepted morality. Today, if he is remembered at all, he is often seen as a mere facile manipulator of rhyme and metre. His literary criticism is also largely forgotten, though he can claim to have been among the earliest enthusiasts for the work of William Blake.

History may have forgotten Swinburne, but the QMG has not.
4. Many, many people have cause to be thankful for modern medicine, especially anesthesia. Where on the body is an epidural injection made?

Answer: Into the spinal column, usually in the lower back

Epidurals are named after the injection site: painkillers are introduced into the epidural space of the spinal column, inside the vertebrae and around the dura mater that encases the inner layers and the spinal cord. Sensation below the injection site is dulled or blocked. To provide pain relief for a short time, the anesthesiologist might inject a single bolus through the catheter. For relief over a longer period - like childbirth - a bag can be set up to provide a continuous infusion.

It's all well-understood medical science, but a thankful CellarDoor can tell you that the effect feels magical.
5. Thanksgiving in the United States is laden with tradition, including turkey and cranberry sauce on the table for dinner. Another tradition, dating back to 1966, is that two teams in the National Football League always play home NFL games. What two teams give thanks on Thanksgiving for being "at home"?

Answer: Detroit and Dallas

The Detroit Lions have hosted a game on Thanksgiving Day every year since 1945. Dallas started hosting its Thanksgiving game in 1966 -- just 10 years after the state of Texas finally joined the rest of the country in having Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday of the month rather than the last Thursday of the month.

This thankful for American football question is hiked to you by Dawgfan1995.
6. What have the heiress Patty Hearst, a British vocalist with 'The Real Thing'(Chris Amoo), King Edward VIII and the FunTrivia quizzer Quiz_Beagle got in common?

Answer: Dog show contestants

In 1928 the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII and later still the third husband of Wallis Simpson, exhibited probably a Labrador at Crufts. In 1987 Chris Amoo's Afghan hound Ch. Viscount Grant won Best In Show at Crufts. 'The Real Thing' are probably best known for their hit "You to Me Are Everything".

On Monday 16 February 2015, Patty Hearst's co-owned Shih Tzu, Rocket, won Top Toy at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club dog show at Madison Square Garden in New York. On 7 March 2015 Q_B's little girl will be making her debut at Crufts (along with Q_B).

Quiz_Beagle is extremely thankful for her two little dogs and is sure that the other owners were and are too!
7. "Thank heaven for little girls For little girls get bigger every day! Thank heaven for little girls They grow up in the most delightful way!" These are lyrics from a song that has been covered by many singers, but in which Hollywood musical did it first appear?

Answer: Gigi

The song was written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. It was used in "Gigi", which was released in 1958. The movie was set in Paris as the 19th Century gave way to the Twentieth. Maurice Chevalier led the cast, and sang the song, with Leslie Caron and Louis Jordan also at the top of the bill. In the 1970s, it became a Broadway musical. The song has also been covered by t Rosemary Clooney, Perry Como, Gérard Depardieu, Merle Haggard, and -unlikely as it may seem (or maybe not) - Hugh Hefner.

This question was contributed by darksplash, who is now thankful to get the sound of Maurice Chevalier out of his head.
8. Which singer/songwriter(s) performed "The Thanksgiving Song" on "Saturday Night Live's" Weekend Update in 1992?

Answer: Adam Sandler

Adam Sandler first performed "The Thanksgiving Song" on SNL's Weekend Update on November 21, 1992. This song predates his more popular "The Chanukah Song", and is built around 2-line rhymes that are mostly non sequiturs, and reflect pop culture of that era;

"Thanksgiving is a special night
Jimmy Walker used to say Dynomite
That's right
Turkey with gravy and cranberry
Can't believe the Mets traded Darryl Strawberry"

The version heard most often on the radio was recorded live at "The Strand" in Redondo Beach, CA, and includes his interaction with the audience when he gets distracted by their rhythmic clapping.

SilverMoonsong is thankful for turkey with homemade gravy, sweet potato casserole, and that this song wasn't very popular so she doesn't have to listen to it again.
9. Ol' Ski Nose, Bob Hope, used "Thanks for the Memory" (often called "Thanks for the Memories") as his signature tune. The song first appeared in a film where Hope and Shirley Ross play a divorced couple who find themselves cruising across the Atlantic together on the S.S. Gigantic. Which movie was this?

Answer: The Big Broadcast of 1938

"Thanks for the Memory" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The song also featured in another of Bob Hope's films, "Thanks for the Memory" which also came out in 1938, though after "The Big Broadcast of 1938".

Ertrum is thankful he doesn't have to keep all Bob Hope's films straight, as there are more than 70 of them.
10. Most people have heard the tale of the first Thanksgiving in the New World, complete with Pilgrims and Indians, however, which president declared that Thanksgiving should be annually celebrated in the United States on the last Thursday in November?

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

The date of the Thanksgiving celebration did not as much matter as the fact it was celebrated during the 200 years between the Pilgrims and Lincoln's suggestion. However, it took even longer for Congress to make up their minds. Congress finally designated Thanksgiving as a national holiday in 1941.
