Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first question comes from Private Flippy who wants to start a war. She is building an army and has plenty of pointy sticks but wants to know how many men does it take to make a battalion?

Answer: From two to seven companies

A squad generally consists of 8-16 soldiers. A platoon is at least 2 squads. A company is 2-8 platoons. A battalion is 2-6 companies, or around 1,000 soldiers. A regiment contains at least 2 battalions and a brigade contains at least 2 regiments. Next come divisions, corps and armies.
How many men does it take to screw in a light bulb? None. He can't find the bulbs and is too stubborn to ask for help.
2. Little Walter from Ohio is interested in volleyball. He thinks he looks real good in shorts and would like to know his chances of making a volleyball team. How many men does it take to play indoor volleyball (including the opposing team)?

Answer: Twelve

The six volleyball players line up in two rows of three on either side of the net. Once the ball is served they can switch around because some people are better at spiking the ball over the net and some are better at setting the ball for the person to spike. When the serve switches sides, the team rotates clockwise so each person potentially has a turn to serve and each person potentially sets up in the front row and in the back row at some point during the game.
Beach volleyball, as played professionally and in the Olympics, consists of two-person teams.
How many real men does it take to change a light bulb? None. Real men aren't afraid of the dark.
3. Jane fancies herself quite the pilot and would like to go up in the Goodyear blimp with her duck. First, though, she'd like to know about the operation of the blimp. According to Goodyear, how many pilots, in general, fly in one of their blimps?

Answer: Four

Goodyear has three blimps which they use for advertising. In addition to the four pilots, a ground crew of up to sixteen mechanics, riggers, handlers and a public relations person also travel along in buses or vans. The blimp is self-sustaining in the field. They even bring along a mooring mast.
Back in the 1970's the Goodrich Tire Company ran ads in which someone would point to the sky and say "Look! It's the Goodrich blimp." Of course Goodrich did not have a blimp. The commercial was meant to point out that Goodrich focused their efforts on making good tires and not in operating blimps.
How many men does it take to fill a blimp with air? Just one, if that man is a politician.
4. P.D. from Arizona would like to meet a nice nerd and she thinks that if she learns everything there is to know about the original "Star Trek" TV show, the one with Capt. James T. Kirk, it will help her land a man. She wants to know how many men (and women) crewed the Starship Enterprise from the original "Star Trek" show?

Answer: Four hundred thirty

Crew on the Starship Enterprise wore different colored shirts to signify the section they worked in. Bridge officers wore lime green; medical and science personnel wore blue; and operations, engineering and security wore red.
A website marketer named Matt Bailey did an analysis of crew deaths in the 80 episodes of the original "Star Trek." Red shirts accounted for a staggering 73%. If you were a newly hired actor hired to be on "Star Trek" who was given a red shirt by wardrobe you knew you would soon be out of a job.
How many men does it take to defeat the Klingon Empire? Only one, as long as that man is Chuck Norris.
5. Our next caller is Miss Squish from The Great White North. She likes to rock out every now and then and wants to know: how many men does it take to staff the band Lynyrd Skynyrd (not counting backup singers)?

Answer: Seven

Ronnie's little brother Johnny resurrected the band in 1987 with seven members. Lynyrd Skynyrd had hits with "Free Bird," "Gimme Three Steps," "Saturday Night Special" and "Sweet Home Alabama."
How many John Tesh fans fit inside a Volkswagen Beetle? About five more than you will find at a NASCAR race.

Answer: Five

The USAF used the Boeing B-52 extensively in Viet Nam. The B-52 could drop 108 500-pound bombs from a height that put them outside the range of small arms fire. The crew consisted of a pilot, copilot, bombardier, navigator and electronic warfare officer. B-52s also saw action in Operation Desert Storm.

When it first came out the B-52 also had a tail gunner. The tail gun was later changed to remote control. Still later the tail gun was removed completely as they found B-52s in actual use did not come under fighter attack. How many Air Force pilots does it take to change a light bulb? Only one, but first he has to requisition one from the quartermaster, in triplicate, using form IC-9B specifying the type of bulb needed, the location it is needed, how long it will be needed, and where the $2,407.10 to pay for the government contract-supplied bulb will come from.
7. My boy Salami has three interests: submarines, submarine sandwiches and videogames. If he was on a submarine and wanted to set up a videogame tournament he needs to know how many people could be in his tournament. In other words approximately how many men (and women) does it take to crew a modern day US Navy attack submarine?

Answer: One hundred forty

The US Navy has attack submarines and ballistic missile submarines. Attack submarines are built to attack enemy ships and submarines, conduct reconnaissance, and perform mine warfare. There are three classes of attack submarines ranging from 360' to 453' long and displacing 6,900 to 9,100 tons. Ballistic missile submarines are built to fire intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The US Navy ballistic missile submarines are 560' long and displace 16,700 tons. How many US Navy sailors does it take to screw in a light bulb? Five. One to screw in the bulb and four to midnight requisition one from the Air Force unit across the field.

10. Big Rick, a llama rancher from Brisbane, is having nightmares about Godzilla attacking his llama herd. He is mad keen to find out how many men does it take to operate the Godzilla costume from the 1954 movie?

Throughout the filming of the movie Nakajima suffered dehydration and near suffocation. In addition to Godzilla, Nakajima at various times played Gezora the giant squid/octopus/cuttlefish (in "Yog: Monster From Space"), King Kong (in "King Kong Escapes"), Baragon the dinosaur ("Frankenstein Conquers the World"), and a giant rat (in "Latitude Zero").
