Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Setting off on their world tour, The Ghostwriters flew out of Sydney on a plane belonging to Australia's national airline. Which of these was it?

Answer: QANTAS

The Ghostwriters were an Australian rock band that was formed in Sydney in 1990. The group's line-up changed several times over the years, with just the founders, Rob Hirst and Richard Grossman, remaining constants.
QANTAS, which stands for "Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services", was set up in November 1920 and went on to become one of the world's most popular airlines.
2. Coming in to Los Angeles, The Ghostwriters landed not, as they had been expecting, at Los Angeles International Airport, but at an airport at Burbank named after a singing, dancing and acting star. Which of these was it?

Answer: Bob Hope

Bob Hope Airport is at Burbank, and is closer to California attractions such as Hollywood and Griffith Park than LAX. The airport had various other names before becoming Bob Hope Airport in 2003. Bob Hope had lived nearby and kept an aeroplane at the airport.
3. The proprietor of Kyle's Kompleat Konnections, you may remember, was once a lowly kennel boy. His organisational skills were somewhat lacking, so when he intended to send The Ghostwriters to San Jose, California, they ended up in a different San Jose. Where was that?

Answer: Costa Rica

I'm not surprised, I hadn't realised there were so many towns called San Jose dotted about the southern USA and central America. San Jose, California is the USA's 10th largest city. San José, Costa Rica, is that country's capital and largest city.
4. From California, The Ghostwriters travelled southwards to fly to the world's highest international airport. What city was it near?

Answer: La Paz, Bolivia

El Alto International Airport is at 13,000 feet, 4,000 metres above sea level. Viru Viru International Airport, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, and a lowly 12000 feet, is Bolivia's most important airport.
5. After landing in South America and performing their first gigs in a capital city, The Ghostwriters discovered that Kyle's Kompleat Konnections had booked them onto a somewhat elderly plane for a flight to a neighbouring country. That plane was a Douglas DC-3. What was the nickname that plane enjoyed?

Answer: Dakota

The first DC-3s were delivered to American Airlines in 1936, More than 10,000 were produced as C-47 military transports during World War II. [boeing.com] Some were still flying 70 years after production stopped.
6. From South America, The Ghost Writers landed in Midland, Michigan, to catch a connecting flight to New York City. They were a bit consternated, though, to find that Kyle's Kompleat Konnections had booked their onward flight on an airline that found infamy in a youtube campaign in 2009 after it broke a singer's guitar. Which airline?

Answer: United

The Canadian singer Dave Carroll saw baggage handlers throwing cases about at Chicago O'Hare Airport then when his flight landed in Nebraska, found his guitar had been damaged. United were less than sympathetic to his calls for compensation so he turned the experience into a song and video that was a hit on youtube. Within weeks, the clip had been viewed by four million people.
Years earlier, the folksinger Tom Paxton had a similar experience with Republic Airlines and turned that into a song.
7. From the New World, The Ghostwriters crossed the Atlantic to the Old, landing at an airport that was named Aldergrove when it was first built in 1917. Many people still call it that, but what was the name it officially changed to in later years?

Answer: Belfast International

Aldergrove, near the town of Antrim in Northern Ireland, opened as a base for the Royal Flying Corps in 1917. It started to handle mail planes in 1922, and the first passenger flights followed in 1933. In 1983 it changed tis name to Belfast International.
Robin Hood Airport in South Yorkshire was known as Finningley Airfield when it opened in 1915. Liverpool John Lennon Airport was known as Liverpool (Speke) when it opened in 1930. Heathrow was known as Great Western Aerodrome when the first flights started there in 1930.
8. After their tour of the UK, The Ghostwriters had their legs crossed when they discovered that Kyle's Kompleat Konnections had booked them onto a flight to France on an airline that said in 2009 it was going to charge passengers to use the onboard toilets. Which airline?

Answer: Ryanair

This may well have been a joke by Ryanair's publicity savvy boss Michael O'Leary, but the company has found many extra ways of getting passengers to pay more money, so no one was ruling it out. It certainly gained Ryanair the kind of publicity that it could not afford to pay for. Also in 2009, All Nippon Airways said it was urging passengers to use airport toilets before boarding planes in order to cut down on weight and thus reduce the carbon footprint.
9. After their concert in Paris, The Ghostwriters flew on to another European city with an airport that can be accessed from two countries. Which city?

Answer: Geneva

Geneva International Airport is located on the Swiss/French border and can be accessed from either country. The airport has distinct Swiss and French sections. Passengers can travel from one French city and on to another via Geneva without going through Swiss immigration.
10. On a trip to Scandinavia, The Ghostwriters found that Kyle's Kompleat Konnections had booked them on a flight on the world's oldest airline. Which claimed that distinction?

Answer: KLM

Founded in October 1919, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is the oldest air company still operating (when this quiz was written in November 2009). It was not the first, though, it was pre-dated by a German company founded in 1909 to fly airships.
11. From western Europe, The Ghostwriters flew to the old Communist bloc. As they waited in baggage claim (their cases they later found had gone to Bangkok) they couldn't help noticing the giant murals of a plane called Concordski, which had been built in this country. Where were they?

Answer: Russia

The Tupolev TU 144 was outwardly very similar to the Anglo French Concorde. Both were supersonic passenger planes. British Airways and Air France operated Concordes and Aeroflot, the Russian national airline, operated the TU 144. Concordski could fly faster than Concorde, but was hampered by reliability and safety problems. Concordski's official operational 'life' was short, just three years from 1975 to 1978.
12. Flying in to an Asian city, The Ghostwriters were intrigued to learn that the flight path to the airport once took planes so close to apartment blocks that the passengers could almost see in. That was before the authorities built a new airport in the middle of the sea. Which city was that?

Answer: Hong Kong

Hong Kong was served by Kai Tak Airport 1925 until 1998. It was replaced by a new Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok, a man-made island created offshore. The old airport had hazardous approaches and was so densely surrounded by buildings that expansion was impossible.
13. The Ghostwriters were very impressed when Kyle's Kompleat Konnections booked them a flight on what was at the time the world's largest aircraft, the Airbus A380. The A380 entered service in 2007, but which of these companies was first to operate it?

Answer: Singapore Airlines

The A380 made its maiden flight in 2005 and its aim was always to out-jumbo the Boeing 747. When it entered service in 2007, it was the world's largest aircraft. With two decks, depending on seating configuration it could handle up to 853 people (if they were all prepared to travel cattle class - sorry, 'Economy').

In a more normal configuration, 525 was expected to be a standard capacity.
14. It was with some relief that The Ghostwriters boarded the plane for the trip back to Australia after their world tour, Kyle's Kompleat Konnections had managed to foul up four of their flights. But it was hardly KKK's fault that the plane struck an albatross over the Pacific and had to make an emergency landing on a US island airbase, Which of these was it?

Answer: Guam

Guam lies in the North Pacific between Hawaii and The Philippines. The US Airforce presence there started in 1944 when Anderson Field was constructed. The base was a crucial asset to the USA in many conflicts from 1944 up to the war in Iraq.
15. After their world tour, The Ghostwriters were looking forward to returning to Australia. They had set off from Sydney, but instead of landing there, the proprietor of Kyle's Kompleat Konnections arranged for them to land at Tullamarine Airport in time for the Gold Cup. Which city was that near?

Answer: Melbourne

Tullamarine Airport is another name for Melbourne International Airport, and the Gold Cup, is of course, the prestigious horse race held there each November.
Melbourne is Australia's second busiest airport.
