Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A silk purse can be made from a sow's ear.

Answer: True

Arthur D. Little, a pioneer in synthetics, took it upon himself to challenge the Shakespearean adage that such a task would be impossible. Hundreds of sows' ears were boiled down into a milky fluid. This fluid was then put through a spinning and drying process, reducing it to synthetic silk. Hard to believe, but this purse is on display in the Smithsonian Institute.
2. When Honduran Indians receive a severe laceration, how do they close the wound?

Answer: With ants

The Honduran Indians use live soldier 'Parasol Ants'. One by one, each ant is held to the wound; the ant bites, drawing the edges of the flesh together. Each ant provides a single stitch. As each ant bites the wound, the body is torn away from the pincers.

This process is repeated until the wound has been treated, and no bleeding remains. The jaws of the ant remain locked, and once the wound has healed, the 'stitches' are cut away with a knife.
3. I could sure go for a 'McDonald's' hamburger right now. In which city and state does this franchise have their corporate office?

Answer: Oak Brook, Illinois

Did you know that 'McDonald's' has installed a 700 gallon hamburger-shaped water-bed in the 'brainstorming chamber' of their headquarters, for executives to relax and come up with new concepts for selling burgers? (WOW) I would like that job!
4. The term 'German Silver', is known to have which of the following mineral elements?

Answer: Copper, zinc, and nickel

The term 'German Silver' is deceiving. German silver contains not a trace of silver.
5. German munitions manufacturers produced a rifle called the 'Krummlauf' which was used in street combat in Stalingrad. What makes this weapon so interesting?

Answer: It had a curved barrel attachment to fire around corners

This rifle had a barrel attachment and a mirror sight that enabled the shooter to fire around a corner, while remaining hidden. The patent for this rifle dates back to the American Civil War, but Germany was the first to use this weapon in a combat situation.
6. What is so interesting about Hippopotamus "sweat"?

Answer: Sometimes their sweat is red

It's, strictly speaking, not sweat, either, but a kind of skin lubricant and protector. .
7. William Dawes and Dr. Samuel Prescott are two men not very well known for their part in which historical event?

Answer: The midnight ride of Paul Revere

William Dawes and Dr. Samuel Prescott both rode with Paul Revere on that famous night. Both these men evaded capture when approached by a British patrol. Paul Revere was captured, and the famous Boston silversmith told the British soldiers everything they wanted to know. (A pistol was held to his head to gain the information.)
8. Caesar Beltram of Lyons, France, was struck by lightning on five different occasions during his life. Please name the manner in which he finally died.

Answer: He died of pneumonia

Mr. Beltram is one of the few humans on record who survived several strikes of lightning.
9. In 1930, the legendary 'Babe Ruth' earned a salary of how much?

Answer: $80,000

When the 'Babe' was asked by a reporter if he thought he should be receiving more pay per year than U.S. President Herbert Hoover, the 'Babe' replied with his famous smile, "Well, I had a better year".
10. Max Hoffman was born in 1860. He was buried in 1865 at the age of 5. What makes Max so interesting?

Answer: He was exhumed 34 hours later and found to be alive

Poor little Max was buried after he appeared to have died from cholera. His mother had a dream later that night that her son was trying to claw his way out of his coffin. It was almost 24 hours after this dream that his body was exhumed, to calm Max's mother down. Max's body was taken to the town doctor, and was found to have a pulse, though it was very weak. Max Hoffman survived, and his most cherished possession was the pair of brass handles he had unscrewed from his coffin while trying to escape. (Max lived well into his eighties.)
