Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who played the part of Adam Adamant in the 1960s television series?

Answer: Gerald Harper

He wore a cape and was always rather brooding and mysterious (but a gentleman)! Francis Matthews played Paul Temple, Jack Warner was Dixon of Dock Green and Roger Moore was, of course, Simon Templar (The Saint).
2. What is the most abundant WILD bird on earth?

Answer: Quelea

The red-billed quelea which is found in Africa is said to number about 1500 million! They can reach plague proportions and pose a serious threat to agriculture. The chicken is the commonest bird on earth (400 million) but most, of course, are domesticated.
3. Do you know what a duyker is?

Answer: An Antelope

The duyker (sometimes duiker) is an antelope found in Africa, South of the Sahara. It is said to get its name from its habit of diving into the bushes when you disturb it - from the Dutch for dive.
4. Oh no! In amongst my change I've been given some meticals? Where will I need to go on holiday to spend them?

Answer: Mozambique

The currency of Mozambique is the metical, Paraguay has the guarani, Moldova the leu and Estonia had the croon before adopting the euro. I think Mozambique might make the best holiday destination of those four!
5. I'm not having much luck! Now I have an iatrogenic illness. How did I get it?

Answer: From a doctor

Yes really! An iatrogenic illness is one caused by the treatment given by a doctor or sometimes by what a doctor says to you. An example might be when you suffer side effects from a medicine prescribed for you.
6. Arthur C. Clarke is a very famous author but do you know where he was born?

Answer: Minehead

He was born on December 16th 1917 in Minehead in Somerset - that's in England. He has lived in Colombo in Sri Lanka since 1956.
7. Do you know which of the following was a goddess of horses?

Answer: Epona

Epona was the Gallic goddess and guardian of horses. She also looked after horsemen (civilian and military) and travellers and kept a watchful eye on those on their way to the Great Beyond. Also associated with fertility. Eris was the girl who threw a golden apple and started the Trojan War, Enki was a Sumerian god who created Earth and man and Equila ... I made her up!
8. In heraldry, if an animal or object is shown as Proper, what would this mean?

Answer: It is shown in its natural colour or colours

This is quite logical when you think about it - if it is shown in its natural colour then it is proper!
9. My luck's changed at last! Someone's given me a Salmanazar of champagne - but how many bottles does it equate to?

Answer: 12

Everybody knows reoboams and nebbuchadnezzars but did you know this one?
10. My quiz identity is Mink. Which of these would my name be in Latin?

Answer: Mustela lutreola

M. putorius is the pole cat, M. nivalis the weasel and M. erminea, as I expect you can work out for yourself, the stoat. The American mink's scientific name is Mustela vison.
