Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Geography: After Ontario, what is the second-most populous province in Canada, with a 2016 census of over 8 million people?

Answer: Quebec

The name "Quebec" comes from an Algonquin word meaning "where the river narrows". It is not only the second-most populous, but also the second-largest Canadian territory or province behind only Nunavut. It is bordered by Ontario to the west, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador to the east, and New York, Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire to the south.

Its capital is Quebec City, and its largest city, Montreal.
2. History: Which South American capital was founded in 1535, after conquistadors led by Francisco Pizarro defeated the Inca ruler Atahaulpa?

Answer: Lima

In 1532, Francisco Pizarro led an ambush to defeat the Inca empire and called the land he had conquered Peru. Three years later he chose Lima for its capital due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and availability of resources. The area though is highly prone to earthquakes; in 1940, a major one destroyed most of the city.

However, it quickly regrew due to rapid immigration from the Andes regions. In 2016, the population was over 10 million people.
3. Hobbies: Crown Royal, Jim Beam, and Maker's Mark are all brands of what alcoholic beverage?

Answer: Whiskey

Whiskey is made from fermented grain mash; the grains rye, wheat, barley and corn are used for different types. There is disputed evidence that distillation was practiced in the 2nd millennium BC by Babylonians, but there is certain evidence that Greeks of Alexandria distilled whiskey in the first century AD.

It is produced and strictly regulated worldwide, with the UK (specifically Scotland) being the leading producer. Jack Daniel's is the best-selling brand worldwide.
4. Humanities: What letter of the Greek alphabet, which in mathematics represents a change in quantity, comes immediately after gamma?

Answer: Delta

Delta is the fourth letter in the Greek alphabet, coming after gamma and before epsilon. The uppercase symbol resembles a triangle, while the lowercase looks like a small "o" with a line on top. In mathematics, the uppercase represents a change of a changeable quantity, and also the area of a triangle.

It also lends its name to a topographical feature, the river delta, as the feature resembles a triangle.
5. Literature: What titular Shakespeare character has the surname Montague?

Answer: Romeo

"Romeo and Juliet", by William Shakespeare, was first published in 1597. The plot is based on the 1562 narrative poem, "The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet" by Arthur Brooke. The play centers around star-crossed lovers Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, whose families are feuding.

It remains one of Shakespeare's most performed plays (along with Hamlet), and there is evidence that it may be the most-filmed play of all time.
6. Music: What is the first name of the musician whose backing group is The Mechanics?

Answer: Mike

Mike and the Mechanics is an English pop/rock supergroup formed in 1985 by Mike Rutherford. Rutherford, a founding member of the band Genesis, began a solo career before forming the group. Perhaps their best known song, "The Living Years", was nominated for four Grammy Awards in 1990.

After going on hiatus in 2004, the band enjoyed a revival in 2010 with new members, and released the 2017 album, "Let Me Fly".
7. Science: Which form of electromagnetic radiation did Wilhelm Röntgen notice could have medical use, after discovering it in 1895?

Answer: X-Ray

After discovering the radiation by use of a Crookes Tube (an early experimental discharge tube), Röntgen named it an "X-Ray" because it was an unknown type of radiation. The name stuck, although many languages today refer to them as Röntgen rays. The discovery earned him a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.

Many medical hazards, however, are a consequence of constant exposure to them, which is why technicians are never in a room while medical images are being taken.
8. Sports: Players of which sport often make use of a type of monocular which measures the distance to a target at which they are aiming?

Answer: Golf

In golf, a small monocular is used as a rangefinder which displays the distance to an object -- usually the flag stick. It is banned in tournaments but very popular among recreational and amateur players. Many can calculate the distance to an object 500 yards or more away within a yard, although typically the distance past 300 yards is irrelevant.
9. World: The first full day of the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead, is the first of which month?

Answer: November

Day of the Dead, or in Spanish, Día de los Muertos, is celebrated from October 31 through November 2nd, to coincide with All Saints' Eve, All Saints' Day, and All Souls' Day. On October 31st, observers construct "ofrendas", displays commemorating individuals who have died, and is intended to welcome them to the celebration.

It originated in the Aztec empire, as a dedication to the goddess of the underworld, Mictecacihuatl.
10. If you got many of the first nine answers, you may find that they belong to a certain group of words endorsed by NATO in 1955. What is it? NATO phonetic __________.
