Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This image depicts a group of penguins off the coast of Chile, specifically at Pingüinera Puñihuil Chiloé. Which of these other animals is native to Chile?

Answer: Llama

South America is home to thousands of animals, many of which reside in the Amazon Rainforest. Despite this, Chile is also home to several species of animals residing in deserts, mountains, glacial bays, and other unique environments. Like Peru to the north, llamas are a native animal. Chile's national animals are the Andean Condor and the Huemul. The other options (Capuchin Monkey, Jaguarundi, and Golden Lion Tamarin), are all found in Brazil.

Pingüinera Puñihuil Chiloé is in Southern Chile-- let me tell you, Chile can reach pretty far south. One of the southernmost countries in the Western Hemisphere, it stretches along the southwest coast of South America. A handful of different penguin species live in the water at the tip of the continent and can travel as far south as Antarctica.
2. This image depicts the spires atop a pair of twin buildings in Malaysia. In which city would you find the Petronas Twin Towers?

Answer: Kuala Lumpur

The Petronas Twin Towers completed construction in 1998 becoming some of the world's tallest buildings (beating the World Trade Centers at the time). Built in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, they've been known to house the Petronas oil and gas company since the opening of the structure.

A major facet of the Kuala Lumpur skyline, another notable feature of the twin towers is their skybridge suspended over forty stories up, allowing visitors to cross between the two buildings at any given time. Taiwan's Taipei 101 surpassed it as the tallest office building less than a decade later.
3. This image depicts a pair of Stormtroopers looking at something in the distance. Maybe some droids? In what movie series can Stormtroopers be found?

Answer: Star Wars

Stormtroopers first appeared in "A New Hope" (1977) as the evil forces (though not 'The Force') of Darth Vader. Imprisoning, guarding, and escorting Princess Leia on the Death Star, Stormtroopers were known for their white garb and monotonous voices. Luke Skywalker and Han Solo both dressed up as Stormtroopers to infiltrate the Death Star brig.

In "Attack of the Clones", Stormtroopers are discovered to have been created as clones of Jango Fett on the planet Kamino. Jango was the father of cult fan favourite Boba Fett; both were bounty hunters.
4. This image depicts a domestic cat. Which of these "facts" about cats is true?

Answer: Cats have better sight at night than humans

Cats are interesting creatures! The facts about cat's eyes are true though-- due to the biology of a cat's eye, it's much easier for a cat to see in the dark than a human...or most domestic animals for that matter. Several different layers within a cat's eyes regulate the amount a cat can see both at night and during the day, healthy or ill, and on many occasions, a cat's eye colour can hint at genetic issues.

Many cats are born with blue eyes but some felines end up with yellow and green eyes as well.
5. This image depicts a country sunrise. Of these countries, which is the first to see the sun rise on a new day as Earth rotates?

Answer: Fiji

When Fiji is on standard time, their time zone is set at GMT+12 because they're adjacent to the International Date Line. This makes them some of the earliest risers on the planet; they share this spot with Tuvalu, Kiribati, and the Marshall Islands. Australia's standard time is set, at the earliest, at GMT+10 and stretches westward to GMT+8. Japan is midway through at GMT+9 (Japan Standard Time) and Iceland is far out of the way at Greenwich Mean Time proper.

Although time shifts around the world to make the sun rise early in the morning, the islands of the Pacific are the first to encounter the sunrise while many are still asleep.

The earliest locations (at GMT+14, oddly) are in the Line Islands of Kiribati.
6. This image depicts a shelf of books. Which one of the offerings on the shelf was the last to be published (in 1996)?

Answer: "Infinite Jest" by David Foster Wallace

"Infinite Jest", by David Foster Wallace, was the second and final novel to be published by the author during his lifetime. After his suicide in 2008, a third novel, "The Pale King", was released posthumously. Nonetheless, "Infinite Jest" remained not only his best-received work (winning awards and distinctions among the century's greatest) but his top-selling. It was released in 1996.

Douglas Coupland's "Microserfs" was released a year earlier in 1995; it was his fourth book and it featured Coupland's typical writing style (only in epistolary form). It followed the rising interest in the internet at the time.
Rand's "We the Living" was her first book written nineteen years before her famous novel "Atlas Shrugged"; it came out in 1936.

"The Hilarious Adventures of Paddington Bear" was a collection of stories about the famous British bear and it was written by Michael Bond, compiled, and published in 1970.
7. This image depicts a Tesla car with an apt 'RIP OIL' license plate. Tesla Motors became famous in 2003 for which of these creations?

Answer: An electric sports car

Tesla, formed in California, started off specializing in smaller electric vehicles but after developments at the turn of the twenty-first century, they rolled their first Tesla Roadsters off the line. This electric sports car would go on to break world records by becoming the furthest-traveling electric car on a single charge-- over five hundred kilometers!

The Tesla utilizes lithium-ion batteries and, in its initial line, sold around the world for top dollar; a Tesla Roadster cost over $100,000 (USD) brand-new, and even more overseas. "Time" magazine called it the 'Best Transportation Invention' in two non-consecutive years.
8. This image depicts a statue atop a famous monument. In which city would you be likely to find the 'gate' featuring this statue?

Answer: Berlin, Germany

Brandenburg Gate is a famous Berlin monument found near the Reichstag in Germany's capital. When the Berlin Wall was built, this monument marked a crossing point for Berliners provided they had the proper visas; the wall was built around the gate and was torn down in the late 1980s. Brandenburg Gate has also been the site of several political speeches, some of the most famous from American presidents.

The gate was built in the late eighteenth century and the statue represents a quadriga, a four-horse chariot.
9. This image depicts a pair of snowboarders resting on a hillside. If these snowboarders lead with their right feet, what is the name of their boarding position?

Answer: Goofy

Snowboarding emerged as an alternative to skiing in the 1990s and grew in popularity as the decade drove on, inevitably becoming an Olympic sport in the 2000s. Besides simply going down the hill, more advanced boarders often take their boards to the halfpipe or tricks set-ups.

Many casual snowboarders will use freestyle boards on the slopes and these boards will allow the rider to take on either a standard stance, in which the left foot leads, or what's called a 'goofy' stance, in which the right foot takes lead. Neither has any benefit unless you happen to lead with one foot over the other.
10. This image depicts the post office standing in Independence, California. Independence's location puts it in the prime spot to access several major National Parks. Which of these National Parks is not in California?

Answer: Great Basin National Park

Found on U.S. Route 395, Independence is near the edge of the Sierra Nevada and is situated between several National Parks; Death Valley is east, Kings Canyon is west, and Sequoia is southwest. The post office depicted was erected in 1866.
California is home to many more National Parks. Aside from those mentioned, one could also visit Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Channel Islands, Lassen Volcanic, and Redwood. Great Basin National Park is in eastern Nevada; you'd go through Vegas on the way there from Independence.
