Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Around 1834, the Oxford English Dictionary mentions something called a "Panama Hat." Where do you think they were made?

Answer: Ecuador

Ecuador is famous for making new and creative hats. They are called "Panama Hats" because the San Francisco 49ers got the hats in Panama. In Ecuador, these hats are also known as Jipijapa.
2. Most of you might have heard of the Canary Islands, but do you know what they were really named after?

Answer: Dogs

The Canary Islands are owned by Spain and are usually called the "Islas Canarias". Researchers say that the Spanish name of the islands was derived from Latin ("Insula Canaria"). In Latin, "Insula Canaria" translates to "Island of the Dogs".
3. How long did the Hundred Years' War last?

Answer: 116 years

The Hundred Years' War lasted from 1337 (leet, ha ha!) to 1453 in France. The war was fought between the House of Valois and the House of Plantagenet (which also connects to question #4) because both Houses claimed to be the rulers of France and England. Although there were many ceasefires, they were not counted into the overall length of the war. The winner: the House of Valois!
4. What was the last name of King Henry II of England?

Answer: Plantagenet

It is certainly a weird last name! Henry II took his last name from the Royal House that he lived in (The House of Plantagenet). Also, interestingly enough, this House also was a main contender in the Hundred Years' War.
5. England is the capital of the United Kingdom.

Answer: False

England is a province of the United Kingdom, like Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Most people think the capital of the UK is England, but it is, in fact, London.
6. A Caesar was the ruler of Rome in ancient times. With that said, where do you think Caesar salads were created?

Answer: Tijuana, Mexico

The man who created the Caesar salad was Caesar Cardini who worked in Tijuana. The restaurant he was working for ran out of ingredients due to the influx of Fourth of July customers. Improvising, Cardini grabbed what he could, put it in a bowl, and thus created the wonderful salad that we enjoy today.
7. The American Civil War was, in a nutshell, a fight between the North and the South. Which side was the state of North Dakota fighting for?

Answer: Neither

In the time of civil war, North Dakota hadn't even been declared a state! It was still part of the Northern Territories until 1889. Also, North Dakota probably wouldn't have fought because it would take too long to mobilize the troops and send them to their destination (most battles were fought in the South).
8. Where in the world do you think American Bulldogs were first bred?

Answer: Europe

American bulldogs were bred in Spain and England to use as herders, butchers' companions, and guard dogs. After a while, immigrants brought the dogs to the American South and continued to breed them until they were spread around the whole country!
9. This is a little tricky: Super Nova is to Magenta as Distortion is to what?

Answer: Green

Super Nova and Distortion are two flavors of Mountain Dew. Super Nova has a magenta color and a strawberry-melon taste, while distortion is green and has a stronger citrus taste plus twice the caffeine!
10. Yay! Last question: what is the capital of Bolivia in South America?

Answer: Both Sucre and La Paz

Bolivia is a country in South America with two capitals. Sucre is the ACTUAL capital, but La Paz is still considered a capital because that is where the Bolivian government meets. South Africa is another nation with more than one capital, except it has three capitals instead of two.
