Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which city was established as the capital of the Republic of Texas in 1839?

Answer: Austin

The city of Austin, an area named in memory of one of the most famous of those responsible for Texas attaining freedom from Mexico, remained the state capital when Texas was admitted to the USA in 1845. The state capitol building (in Austin) was completed in 1888. At the time of its completion it was the seventh largest building in the world.
2. What is a team name of a Major League Baseball team from Houston, Texas?

Answer: Astros

The Houston Astros joined Major League Baseball as an expansion team in 1962. They were originally a part of the National League, Central Division.
3. While the 21st century was still very young (early 2000s), the innovative and (seemingly) profitable company Enron sprung into the headlines as scandal and corruption within the company was found. This forced what major league sports team to find a new sponsor and change the name of its home venue from Enron Park to Minute Maid Park?

Answer: Houston Astros

A state-of-the-art stadium had been built for the Houston Astros in 2000 - one of the first stadiums to feature a retractable roof. Though originally it seemed to be "a marriage made in heaven" for the Houston-based company Enron to claim the naming rights, this bliss would only last two years. Fortunately for the Astros, there was another Houston-based powerhouse able to give support and naming rights to their house. That was Minute Maid.
4. Name the Grammy award winner whose family members included other famous singers, and who had starred in world-popular movies, but sadly passed away in February, 2012 - the day before that year's Grammy Awards ceremony.

Answer: Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston's amazing talent and multi-faceted successes were sometimes over-shadowed by personal struggles - tumultuous marriage to Bobby Brown, substance abuse that brought physical, mental and emotional health concerns and media releases that were more uncomplimentary than favorable. Yet her iconic image persevered - even to her death.
5. What city can claim professional (American) football teams named Oilers, Texans, Gamblers and ThunderBears?

Answer: Houston

The Houston Oilers and Houston Texans were from the National Football League (NFL), while the Houston Gamblers and Houston ThunderBears were in the United States Football League (USFL) and Arena Football League, respectively.
6. "Don't Leave Me This Way" won the 1978 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. The song had been previously released in 1975 by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. Who took her 1977 version all the way to the top of the charts?

Answer: Thelma Houston

Thelma was neither born in Houston, Texas nor born with the last name that she took with her to a successful singing career. She was born Thelma Jackson - in Mississippi but spent much of her childhood in California. "Don't Leave Me This Way" is generally accepted as her signature song yet since 1969 she has actively recorded, entertained and been recognized for her philanthropic contributions.
7. Among his many accomplishments and historical contributions, Sam Houston was the governor of two different states of the United States of America. Which two?

Answer: Tennessee and Texas

Sam Houston had already been a disabled veteran, representative in the US House from Tennessee, and close personal friend of President Andrew Jackson before he was elected governor of Tennessee. Though he had spent some time in Mexico, he championed the causes and led in several capacities as Texas fought for its independence from Mexico. Again, he represented his home state (now Texas) in Washington, and after that was elected the seventh governor of the state of Texas.
8. NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has one research, training and flight control center located in Houston, Texas. It is named in memory of a former president of the United States. What is this space center commonly called?

Answer: Johnson Space Center

It is appropriate in many ways to honor former US president Lyndon B. Johnson with the naming of this space center in Houston. He was a native Texan. And he - as had been the commitment of his immediate predecessor, JFK - did much to ensure that America stayed active (or led the way) in space exploration.
9. This awarded entertainer - appreciated for work in music, movies and philanthropy - is a native of Houston, Texas. In music, she was formerly associated with a group of entertainers, but later was more widely recognized as a "single act" artist. Who is this celebrity?

Answer: Beyoncé

Beyoncé (Knowles) was born and raised in Houston, Texas. She gained early respect and admiration as the lead singer of the R&B girl group, Destiny's Child. With Destiny's Child, her career had only begun. She has acted on stage and on the big screen, has designed clothing, created her own line of perfumes and even preformed at the Inaugural Celebration of (USA) President Obama in 2008.
10. The movie "Apollo 13" (1995) is well-known in pop culture for many reasons. The film has been universally complimented for its accuracy and did much to rejuvenate the public's interest in space. It featured multi-talented Ron Howard as its director. It was even able to win the Best Sound Academy Award for 1995. What phrase has become a part of world-wide vernacular thanks to this blockbuster movie?

Answer: Houston, we have a problem

"Houston, we have a problem" was said in the film by Commander Jim Lovell who was portrayed by Tom Hanks. It is a paraphrase of a sentence spoken during the actual flight of the American space mission of the same name, Apollo 13. Just as in the movie, all of the crew made it back to earth safely and this manned space flight would be recorded as a successful failure.
