Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When did the character Cookie Monster on "Sesame Street" make his first appearance?

Answer: Dec. 2, 1969

The Muppet Cookie Monster appeared in skits previous to this, but was not known as Cookie Monster. He was also known as Alistair Cookie. Cookie was created by famed Muppet Master Jim Henson.
2. Which "Seinfeld" character delivered the following lines: "...the key to eating a black and white cookie is that you wanna get some black and some white in each bite. Nothing mixes better than vanilla and chocolate".

Answer: Jerry

Black-and-white cookies are also sometimes referred to as Half-Moons. The black-and-white cookie was featured in Season 5-Episode 77 of the television show "Seinfeld". Jerry and Elaine went to the bakery to purchase a babka, and Jerry ate the cookie while waiting.
3. In which Harrison Ford movie does his character say, "Kathryn, if you give a mouse a cookie..."?

Answer: Air Force One

Glenn Close portrayed Vice President Kathryn Bennett in the movie "Air Force One" (1997). Gary Oldman was the terrorist in control of the aircraft. The quote is given in reference to negotiating with terrorists, implying that if they conceded to the initial demands, there would only be more demands added.
4. Oreo cookies debuted in New York City in 1912. How many (original) cookies were in an 18oz package?

Answer: 45

Strangely, the serving size listed on Oreo cookie packages is not given in number of cookies, but in grams. The math given equals 15 servings of three cookies. Oreo cookies originally debuted with lemon meringue and cream flavors. They later became known as "Milk's favorite cookie".
5. The word "cookie" is derived from the Dutch "koekje". Which of the following is NOT a word meaning cookie in another language?

Answer: pasticcio

Pasticcio means "pie" in Italian. Cookies are also known as biscuits in England. In Scotland, a cookie is a plain bun rather than a sweet treat. As for the other choices: "galleta" is Spanish for cookie; "kek" is a German word for cookie; and, finally, "focaccina" is the Italian term for cookie or scone.
6. Peanut butter cookies traditionally have fork marks crossing their tops. What is the origin of this characteristic?

Answer: Peanut butter dough does not flatten during cooking, and must be flattened before baking.

I'm sure people allergic to peanuts appreciate the hatching, but it is not added for their awareness. Peanut butter dough doesn't flatten as easily as other types of dough, because the peanut butter itself adds a certain amount of thickness to the batter.

Incidentally, peanut allergies are estimated to affect around .5 percent of the population. The allergy is usually separate from nut allergies.
7. Who wrote the children's book "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie"?

Answer: Laura Numeroff

Numeroff has written several books in the series, including "If You Give a Pig a Pancake" and "If You Give a Moose a Muffin". Numeroff is a New York native. She has written more than eighteen children's books.
8. The chocolate chip cookie was invented at the Toll House Inn by Ruth Wakefield. When did this accidental invention occur?

Answer: 1930s

Wakefield apparently "invented" the chocolate chip cookie in 1934. She later sold the recipe to Nestle in exchange for a "lifetime supply of chocolate chips". The Toll House Inn was sold in 1966, with the intent that the new owners would turn it into a nightclub. It was sold again in 1970 and restored to its original function, but finally burned down in 1984.

9. Charles Roser invented the Fig Newton cookie in 1891. After what is the "newton" named?

Answer: Newton, Massachusetts

There are multiple varieties of the cookie to accompany the original Fig version. Figs are an oft overlooked fruit, even though they are one of the oldest known and culturally significant in many places.

Personally, my favorite Newton is Apple Cobbler.
10. Almost everyone has a favorite Girl Scout cookie. In 1951, how many flavors were available?

Answer: 3

Sandwich, Shortbread, and Chocolate Mints were the only options in 1951. Chocolate Mints have, of course, become known as Thin Mints. The original sale of cookies started as local fundraisers, with Troop members and families baking the cookies themselves. Girl Scouts operates in more than ninety countries around the globe.
