One of the greatest female jazz singers of all time. She had no training but developed a vivid and intensive style that even made some people cry. Billie said, "What comes out is what I feel". She led a sad life having come from grinding poverty only to fall victim to alcohol, heroin and fortune hunting men. She died in 1959 when she was only 44 years old.

Soap was used for medication of wounds. It arrived on the scene with the earliest recordings being 2800 BC but it was not used for cleansing until thousands of years later. Ancient Greeks and Romans rubbed their bodies with olive oil and sand. Then they scraped the mixture off with a wooden scraper.

While the Romans did bathe, they added oils and other good things to the water....but not soap.

Each US citizen eats about 23 quarts of ice cream a year according to the ice cream industry. The New Englanders eat more than anyone else in the country. The US favorites are vanilla and chocolate---what no tutti fruitti? During the Victorian period, it was considered immoral and not at all proper to drink soda water on Sundays.

Many towns even banned the sale of soda water. But we used our good old American ingenuity and concocted a delicacy of ice cream and syrup and because it could be eaten on Sunday, it was called a "sundae".

Answer: Laika

"Laika" was the first dog to orbit Earth. It traveled aboard the Russian satellite, "Sputnik II". Laika in Russian means "the barker". I wonder who took it out for a walk?

Years ago, it is said that the barmen in the pubs would keep track of the customers' drinks---run a tab---The barmen would run a tally of the pints (p's) and quarts (q's) that each customer purchased. If the tab ran too high, the barmen would issue the warning, "Mind your p's and q's!"

The myth that Napoleon suffered from hemorrhoids is often repeated however, there is no record of this. There is documentation that he suffered greatly from bladder stones. He was in poor health for years prior to the battle. The French were defeated soundly mainly because they were so outnumbered by the British and Prussian armies.

The Border collie, poodle, German shepherds, golden retriever and Doberman pinscher can usually understand a new command with five repetitions or less and, once they have learned it, will obey it the first time 95 percent of the time.

The basset hound, bulldog, bloodhound, chow chow and Pekingese usually takes 80 to 100 repetitions or more before they learn a new command. Once they have learned it, they will obey the command the first time less than 25 percent of the time.
