Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the correct title of the piece commonly called "Fur Elise"?

Answer: Albumblatt

"Fur Elise" is the piece's subtitle - basically, it's "Albumblatt", for Elise. It's also sometimes called "Bagatelle #25 in A".
2. Of which fleet was/is the HMS Lady Juliana a part?

Answer: Australian Second Fleet

The Second Fleet comprised six ships - two storeships (the Guardian and the Justinian), and four convict ships (Lady Juliana, Neptune, Scarborough and Surprize). Unlike the First Fleet, the Second Fleet was privately funded, but it was disastrous. After leaving England in 1789, mishap began when the Guardian struck ice early on, and was unable to complete the journey.

By the time the fleet arrived in Australia in 1790, 278 people had died, and nearly 500 of the remaining convicts landed suffering from scurvy, dysentery and fever - many couldn't even walk on their own.

The Lady Juliana was carrying female convicts, and several of them gave birth en route, apparently from the crews of the African slave ships which the Second Fleet met at Santa Cruz.

The death rate on the Second Fleet was the worst in the history of transportation.
3. What is Big Ben?

Answer: A bell

Big Ben is the bell within the clocktower of the British Houses of Parliament in London, England. Most people seem to think that Big Ben is the tower, or the clock, but it's actually the bell.
4. What movie's closing song advises one to "Always look on the bright side of Life"?

Answer: Monty Python's "The Life of Brian"

The six members of the Monty Python group played about 40 characters between them - that's an average of almost seven each.
5. By what name was Thailand previously known?

Answer: Siam

Siam is where the movie "The King and I" was set, but today it is known as Thailand. Laos is a modern-day country to the east of Thailand; Guangzhou (previously Canton) is a city in China; and Manchuria is a former country to the north of China, but it is now a part of China.
6. Which of Disney's dwarfs from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" does not have a beard?

Answer: Dopey

Poor chap... fancy his mother calling him Dopey.
7. If I were to place a mark on the outside of the left hand sleeve of a t-shirt, and then turn it inside out and put it on such that the tag is still on the back, where would the mark be?

Answer: Inside of the right sleeve

A simple spatial orientation question. Turning a t-shirt inside out also reverses the front and the back. Thus, turning it around so the back is once more the back means that the left becomes the right.
8. Brent Spiner is probably most famous for his portrayal of the android Data in "Star Trek: The Next Generation", a role which involved his wearing yellow contact lenses. What is his natural eye colour, sans lenses?

Answer: Blue

They are quite a deep blue - particularly noticeable in "Master of Disguise", where he plays Devlin Bowman.
9. Whose first album, "Tubular Bells", was made famous when it was used in the movie "The Exorcist"?

Answer: Mike Oldfield

Tubular Bells was also Virgin Records' first release, and went on to become a multi-million dollar seller. In addition, with the release of another of his albums, "Hergest Ridge" in 1974, Mike became the third person ever to knock himself out of the Number 1 slot in the UK charts - the other two being The Beatles and Bob Dylan. "Tubular Bells" spent 247 weeks in the charts, and 13 weeks in the top 10.
10. In mechanical engineering terms, what is a strut?

Answer: A member of a frame in compression

A strut is in compression (being squashed), a tie is under tension (being stretched), a beam is subjected to a bending moment, and a bar is under torsion (twisting) forces.
11. What is the literal translation of the French phrase "C'est la vie"?

Answer: It's the life

Its meaning, however, is something like "that's life".
12. Of the ten highest mountains in the world, how many can be found in the Himalayas mountain range?

Answer: Ten

K2 (also called Chogori) and Nanga Parbat - the second and ninth highest, respectively - can be found in Kashmir. The rest (In order of height: Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Dhaulagiri I, Manaslu, Cho Oyu and Annapurna I) can be found in Nepal.
13. On which of these television shows has Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson NEVER appeared?

Answer: The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

On "Voyager" he played a wrestler... interestingly enough.
14. In how many major countries in the world is the Fahrenheit scale still used to measure temperature?

Answer: One

Only in America, in fact... Daniel Fahrenheit (also the inventor of the alcohol and mercury thermometers) set 0 to be the lowest temperature he could get with an ice-salt mixture (about -18 degrees C) and 100 to be human body temperature. He then found that the freezing point of water turned out to be 32 and the boiling point 212 - a difference of 180, so he called them degrees (since 360 degrees is a full circle). Human body temperature was later corrected to about 98.6 degrees F. (Although some smaller countries such as Jamaica and Liberia MAY still use the Fahrenheit scale at the beginning of the 21st century, the only major country to do so is the USA.)
15. What is the provincial flower of the Canadian province of Alberta?

Answer: wild rose

Wild rose bushes are found growing wild through much of the province.

The white trillium is the flower for Ontario. The purple pitcher plant is for Newfoundland and Labrador, and the prairie crocus for Manitoba.
