At the beginning of each inning, or upon relieving another pitcher, the pitcher is allowed eight warm-up pitches during which play is suspended; the pitches should not exceed eight and should only be one minute in length. If a pitcher is called into the game without an opportunity to warm-up, the umpire-in-chief allows as many pitches as the umpire believes necessary.
