Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of the following was not one of the 11 original countries that adopted the Euro as its standard currency in 1999?

Answer: United Kingdom

The 11 original countries were France, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal. The Brits love their pounds.
2. Which of the following states borders the most other states?

Answer: Tennessee

Tennessee borders North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri, and Georgia for a total of 8. Maine only borders one state which is unique for the lower 48.
3. Which sport does not have a foul line?

Answer: American Football

Football has an out-of-bounds line. Step on it in bowling and your ball doesn't count. In baseball, if you hit the foul line, the ball is fair - go figure?
4. Which of the following past US presidents was the youngest to leave office alive?

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

Teddy was only 50 when he left office in 1909 after almost 8 years in office. Kennedy was tragically only 46 when he was assassinated, but he was of course never a living ex-president..
5. In 2003, the movie "Finding Nemo" set a record as the top grossing cartoon movie. What movie did "Finding Nemo" beat out for this record?

Answer: The Lion King

"The Lion King" has grossed over $750 million worldwide. Hakuna Matata.
6. What is the symbol for the element Copper?

Answer: Cu

Where is the u? There is no Cp -that's what I would have used. Who thinks up these things?
7. What number less than 1,000 has the most Roman numerals in it?

Answer: 888

DCCCLXXXVIII - 12 Letters. Those 8's really add up.
8. What was the oldest US space shuttle still in use after the Columbia tragedy in 2003?

Answer: Discovery

Construction on Discovery began in 1979 and its first launch was August 30, 1984. The Enterprise was the first space shuttle but it was not built to fly in space and was only used for testing. Endeavour was built to replace the Challenger basically from spare parts.
9. Approximately how much length must be added to a 25,000 mile long string that extends all the way around the earth's equator, to raise it one inch off the ground for its entire 25,000 mile length?

Answer: 6 inches

The radius of the circle formed by the string must be increased by 1 inch. Using the formula that a circumference = 2 times the radius times PI(3.14), tells you that the circumference (or length of the string) only has to increase by 6 inches. The same is true if it was a basketball. Math can be weird.
10. What former Beatle had an album cover that featured Gort from the movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still?"

Answer: Ringo

"Goodnight Vienna" featured the robot from my favorite movie. Thanks for playing my quiz.
