Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How long did the Hundred Years War last?

Answer: 116 years

A perfect example of rounding down to the nearest hundred. The Hundred Years War lasted from 1337-1453. The name 'The Hundred Years War' is also misleading as it wasn't one war, but a whole series of smaller wars with outbreaks of peace in between. It was a fight for the French throne between the Houses of Valois and Plantagenet.
2. What country do Panama hats come from?

Answer: Ecuador

A panama hat is a traditional hat from Ecuador made from plaited leaves. In the 19th century and early 20th century, many South American goods were first sent to Panama before being shipped around the world. These hats from Ecuador came to be known for the place they were shipped from rather than their place of origin.
3. From what animal do we get catgut?

Answer: Sheep

Catgut is usually made from the intestines of sheep or goats. The natural fibres in the animals' intestines are used to make high quality strings for musical instruments and tennis rackets and were once commonly used as sutures in medicine. The name 'catgut' may be an abbreviation of the word 'cattlegut' or it may derive from the word 'kitgut', where 'kit' means 'fiddle'.
4. In what month do Russians remember the October Revolution?

Answer: November

The October Revolution, or Russian Revolution, took place under the old Julian calendar on October 25, 1917. The change to the Gregorian calendar saw this date shift to 7 November. This day is not publicly celebrated in modern Russia because of its association with communism.
5. What is a camel's hair paintbrush made from?

Answer: Horse hair

Although commonly known as 'camel hair' brushes, camel hair is not suitable for use as paintbrush bristles. Instead paintbrushes are made from sable, hog, ox or goat hair. Camel hair itself is too woolly to be used as a paintbrush. The term 'camel hair' brush is a generic one covering brushes made from different types of animal hair, but usually refers to lower quality brushes such as those used in schools or for cosmetic brushes.
6. What animal are the Canary Islands named after?

Answer: Dogs

The Canary Islands are owned by Spain, and the Spanish name for them is 'Islas Canarias'. This is thought to derive from the Latin 'Insula Canaria', meaning 'Island of the Dogs'. In the 1st century B.C., Juba, King of Mauritania and vassal of Rome, discovered the islands which had a multitude of dogs and named the islands after the dogs.

The coat of arms for the Canary Islands features two dogs, one on each side of the shield.
7. What was England's King George VI's first name?

Answer: Albert

King George VI's full name was Albert Frederick Arthur George. He was named after his great-grandfather Prince Albert, as he was born on the anniversary of his death. Within the family he was called Bertie, but formally he was Prince Albert of York. When Prince Albert took the throne after the abdication of his elder brother Edward VIII, he took the name King George VI, to show continuity with his father King George V, and to try and restore public confidence in the monarchy.
8. What colour is a purple finch?

Answer: Crimson

The purple finch is actually a crimson colour. Roger Tory Peterson described it as "a sparrow dipped in raspberry juice". It is only the male that has this colouring; the females have no red. They are found in Canada and the United States and it is the state bird of New Hampshire.
9. Who caught the French disease in the 16th century?

Answer: The Italians

Syphilis was known as 'the French disease' in Italy, Poland and Germany in the 16th century. The French called it 'the Italian disease'. It is a sexually transmitted disease which can be fatal if untreated, and in the days before antibiotics there was no known treatment for it. Some famous syphilis sufferers include Al Capone, Paul Gauguin and Scott Joplin.
10. What is the colour of a black box in a commercial aeroplane?

Answer: Orange

A 'black box' or flight data recorder in a commercial aeroplane is usually orange. This is to enable it to be found more easily after a crash. The origin of the term 'black box' is unknown. It may have arisen because early flight data recorders were based on the use of film and the inside of the box had to be completely black like a dark room.
