Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which astronaut, the first to set foot on the moon, received his pilot's license prior to his driver's license?

Answer: Neil Armstrong

Neil Armstrong (1930-2012) earned his pilot's license before his driver's license, and rode a bicycle to and from the airport. Always enthusiastic about flying, Armstrong was a navy fighter pilot and a test pilot prior to becoming an astronaut.

2. The children's TV programme 'Button Moon' started in the United Kingdom in December 1980 and ended in December 1988 after 91 episodes. What was the name of the main character?

Answer: Mr. Spoon

Mr. Spoon and his family were made of everyday household objects, and always used the rocket in the garden to go to 'Button Moon'. Once there, they would have adventures, usually spying on Brew the Witch. Tina Teaspoon is his daughter. Little Bottle is another smaller character.

3. Many well-known songs mention the Moon. True or false: Uncle Earl released an album in 2005 which contained a track entitled 'Pale Moon'?

Answer: True

Uncle Earl is an American all-girl band that predominantly specialises in 'Old-Time' music. Formed in 2000, they chose the name Uncle Earl, according to K C Groves (a co-founder), because "We are fans of Earl Scruggs, Steve Earle, and Uncle Tupelo. It did come up in our discussion that there's some important Earls in this business. And Uncles".

4. In the card game of Hearts, the object is to avoid taking any hearts and the dreaded Queen of Spades. But, to make this game interesting, if you do take all the hearts and the Queen of Spades, you are said to have done what?

Answer: Shot the Moon

Hearts, as a card game, is thought to have originated from the related game Reversis. This was a Spanish card game played since the 1750s. The idea of Reversis was very similar to Hearts: penalties were levied for taking a trick plus additional penalties for 'capturing' the Jack or Queen of Hearts. A variation of this game involved avoiding any trick which contained a Jack with one penalty point awarded for each Jack and two for the Jack of Spades.

5. Released in 1953, which 'Moon' movie violated the Motion Picture Production Code, a list of guidelines that set moral censorship rules for US motion pictures from 1930 to 1968?

Answer: The Moon Is Blue

Starring David Niven, William Holden and Maggie McNamara, 'The Moon Is Blue' was a romantic comedy. The movie was deemed to be in violation of the Motion Picture Production Code because of its 'light and gay treatment of the subject of illicit sex and seduction.'

The film was originally banned in Kansas, Maryland and Ohio. The director, Otto Preminger, and the film company, United Artists, challenged the ban in the Maryland courts and had the decision reversed in December 1953. The ban in Kansas and Ohio remained in place until it was over-turned by the Supreme Court of the United States in 1955.

10. In 1969, Apollo 11 landed the first man on the moon. The Apollo program was concluded in 1972 with Apollo 17. Who was the last Apollo astronaut to walk on the moon? He was the commander of Apollo 17.

Answer: Eugene Cernan

Eugene Cernan was the commander of Apollo 17 and, by dint of the fact that he followed the Lunar Module pilot Harrison Schmitt into the Lunar Module, he holds the honour of being the last Apollo astronaut to walk on the moon's surface.

The Apollo program began tragically in 1967 when, during final testing, a fire in the command capsule led to the deaths of all three astronauts on board the craft: Virgil 'Gus' Grissom, Edward H. White and Roger B. Chaffee.
