Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One popular scientific event is an eclipse, something that only happens when a series of celestial bodies line up during their orbit. In which type of eclipse is Earth placed between the sun and the moon?

Answer: Lunar Eclipse

In a lunar eclipse, the sun's light is blocked from hitting the moon when the Earth passes directly between the two. Annually, the Earth sees at least two lunar eclipses whether total or partial. In the case of a total lunar eclipse, the moon typically appears with a red colour due to the Earth's atmosphere. On the contrary, a solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between Earth and the sun, blocking out the light. Both partial and total eclipses can occur though they are fewer and further between than lunar eclipses.

They'll usually occur every year and a half, and it takes centuries for them to recur in the same location.
2. Which movie starring Jim Carrey features the title character using an invisible lasso to pull the full moon closer to Earth for the sake of his girlfriend?

Answer: Bruce Almighty

Starring Jim Carrey, "Bruce Almighty" follows a news reporter who is contacted by God after he claims that the Lord isn't doing anything to help him. As a result, God (Morgan Freeman) gives him his powers to prove that the job is much more difficult than he thinks. In the beginning, Bruce makes many horrible decisions as to what should be done with the powers, but he soon realizes the truth behind it. At one point, Bruce lassos the moon with invisible rope and pulls it closer to Earth with his powers to astound his girlfriend, Grace (played by Jennifer Aniston). The one-night thing wreaks havoc across the world as the moon's influence on the tides causes widespread flooding in third-world Asian countries.

"Bruce Almighty" became one of the highest-grossing comedies ever released. Earning $500,000,000 in revenue, it became one of Carrey's most well-received comedies. It was also followed by a sequel four years later known as "Evan Almighty". It wasn't as good.
3. Sure, it can't happen, but according to Dean Martin, when the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, what is 'it'?

Answer: Amore

"That's Amore" became one of Dean Martin's most popular songs after it was released in 1953. The song is stereotypically present in scenes featuring romance, moonlight, and Italian dinners. In fact, the 1987 film "Moonstruck" (for which Cher won her 'Best Actress' Oscar) uses "That's Amore" as its title theme. Many different films, TV shows, and video games reference the song in other ways though usually in the same context.

Don't worry...the moon can't actually do this. And Cher only wins an Oscar once in a blue moon, if that. :)
4. Never did you think you'd be eating the moon. (I thought it tasted like cheese!). What cereal features a marshmallow blue moon?

Answer: Lucky Charms

Created by General Mills (also known for Cheerios, Count Chocula, Trix, and others), Lucky Charms has been on grocery store shelves since the mid-sixties. The cereal is typically known to contain 'hearts, stars, horseshoes, clovers and blue moons, pots of gold and rainbows, and the red balloon'. All of these objects are simply marshmallow shapes amongst a number of oats. Lucky, the cereal box's mascot, is commonly seen fleeing the scene as kids always tend to be after his 'Lucky Charms'. Other marshmallows have appeared in the box over time, but moons have been a staple since day one.

They originally used to be yellow, but changed to blue after the removal of the 'blue diamond' bit.
5. Very rarely is anyone actually named after the moon! What famous musician named his/her daughter 'Moon'?

Answer: Frank Zappa

In 1967, Frank Zappa was bestowed with daughter 'Moon Unit', his oldest child (followed by Dweezil, Ahmet, and Diva Zappa). Since then, Moon Unit has appeared in a number of film and television series and she's written a book. She has also been married to one of the band members of the alternative rock group Matchbox Twenty. Her father, Frank Zappa, passed away in 1993 leaving behind a rock legacy spanning a number of decades. She appeared as a guest vocalist in his song "Valley Girl" in 1982.

Her name is parodied in the film "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" when Dr. Evil creates a moon lair at which The Allen Parsons Project is put into effect. He splits his lair workers into 'Moon Unit Alpha' and 'Moon Unit Zappa'.
6. How often do the moon's powers need to be called upon to save us from the evil Negaverse? What TV show (originally a Japanese anime series) starred Serena as the titular heroine?

Answer: Sailor Moon

Fighting evil by the moonlight and winning love by daylight, "Sailor Moon" stars Serena (affectionately known as Meatball-Head in American dubs), a young girl who is granted the powers of the moon to save the world from devastating otherworldly forces.

The show is based on an anime and manga series from Japan and became one of the precursors to later waves of anime shows in the late nineties and 2000s. With her Sailor Scouts, each representing planets in the solar system, they banish creatures from space and other dimensions to protect Earth.

The first season of the show followed the scouts as they saved us all from Queen Beryl, the leader of the Negaverse. In the daytime, Sailor Moon typically attends school and maintains her daily life.
7. From what I hear, it's not very easy to stay there. What 'moon' location is also the name of one of Pink Floyd's most popular albums?

Answer: The Dark Side of the Moon

Recorded at Abbey Road and released in 1973, "Dark Side of the Moon" became one of Pink Floyd's most well known albums, and its album artwork is one of the most recognizable in the world (up there with Nirvana's "Nevermind" and The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"). The first single, "Money", is one of the band's most notable songs. The CD was on the Billboard charts for fourteen years after its debut. Over twenty million copies have been sold worldwide and it hit 15x platinum in the United States alone.

Our actual moon's 'dark side' is a bit mysterious. The same side of the moon is always visible from the Earth, so the opposite side is always facing outwards. This is deemed the 'far side'. The 'dark side' changes depending on the satellite's position around Earth.
8. Talk about a unique honeymoon. What 2009 horror film starring Amy Smart sees her and her new hubby in China where they are attacked by frightening creatures during a Ghost Festival?

Answer: Seventh Moon

Directed by "The Blair Witch Project" director, Eduardo Sánchez, "Seventh Moon" was released as part of the 2009 compilation of Ghost House Underground films. The film follows a couple on honeymoon in China, and as such, they have decided to use a shaky video camera to capture the events which occur. Landing and celebrating in China during the Hungry Ghost Festival, they hit the roads for rural China and discover that they've taken a wrong turn in the middle of Chinese-nowhere at the wrong time.

Their driver goes missing, they're forced to set out on foot, and they realize they need to flee from frightening creatures of local legend.
9. Sometimes the moon gets angry and comes crashing down, am I right? The video game "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask" sees this unnatural event occur over the course of how many days?

Answer: Three

As part of the same canon as "Ocarina of Time", "Majora's Mask" follows the main character, Link, as he travels to the world of Termina to find a long-lost friend. Before falling 'down the rabbit hole', he comes across a Skull Kid who steals a priceless item of his before transforming him into a Deku Scrub, a small creature from the series. Using masks, weapons, and other items, Link only has three days to complete his task and stop Skull Kid from finishing the moon's collision course. Once Link reclaims the Ocarina of Time though, things are a bit easier.

He can play the Song of Time to warp back three days and restart the clock. Things get complicated when everything restarts though... The game was released on the Nintendo 64 in 2000. Though it didn't claim as high scores as "Ocarina of Time", it was still extremely successful.
10. Don't let it get away! Created by Square-Enix, what 2008 video game sees the moon chained to the Earth?

Answer: Infinite Undiscovery

Developed by Tri-Ace, a subsidiary of Square-Enix (known for "Kingdom Hearts" and "Final Fantasy"), "Infinite Undiscovery" is an RPG set in real-time. The story follows a group of fighters who plan to untether the moon from the large chains binding it to Earth.

As a result of these magical chains, sustenance (such as crops and water) slowly begins to diminish. Only some people can destroy the powerful chains- that's the goal of the game. Released solely on the Xbox 360, the game received moderate success and hit-or-miss reviews due to the game's cliche performance.
