It was first used to treat ulcers but animal tests were not successful, so Upjohn synthesized over 200 variations including oral tablets to treat high blood pressure in 1979. But it proved to be an effective vasodilator. In 1988 it became a topical solution to stimulate hair growth in men and later in 1991 it was approved for women.
