Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which football (soccer) team, won promotion to the Football League in 2012 and is nicknamed the Cod Army?

Answer: Fleetwood Town

After just two seasons in League Two, Fleetwood won promotion to League One in 2014, their sixth promotion in just ten years. The club nickname comes from the town of Fleetwood's history as a deep sea fishing port and fishing related industries within the town. Trivia fact, Fleetwood's stadium is named Highbury, which was the name of Premiership giants Arsenal's stadium before their move to The Emirates.
2. Which movie director received much acclaim for the 1969 movie "Kes" which told the story of Billy Casper and his pet kestral?

Answer: Ken Loach

Loach began movie directing with "Poor Cow" in 1967, after directing hard hitting TV plays such as "Cathy Come Home". Kes was voted the seventh best British movie of the 20th century by the British Film Institute, although as it told the story of a family in a Yorkshire mining community, the dialect caused one American reviewer to comment it would have been easier to have understood a movie made in Hungarian!

Steve Guppy was a football (soccer) player, Mike Carp was a first baseman for the Seattle Mariners and Bill Roache is an actor, most famous for playing Ken Barlow in "Coronation Street".
3. Which artist, famous for "drip painting", released his last two paintings in 1955, entitled "Scent" and "Search"?

Answer: Jackson Pollock

Despite achieving fame as a "drip painter", leading to "Life" magazine asking "Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?", Pollock stopped drip painting in 1951, with his later works, especially during his so called "Black pourings" phase, disappointing many art collectors, so great was the shift in style. Pollock died in 1956 in a single vehicle alcohol related car accident.
4. In which country would one find Salmon Arm and Herring Neck?

Answer: Canada

Salmon Arm is a city in British Columbia on the shores of Shuswap Lake, overlooked by Mount Ida, and Herring Neck is a small fishing community in Newfoundland and Labrador which was first settled in the 1760s.
5. Captain Haddock is a character from "The Adventures Of Tintin" by Belgian cartoonist Hergé. What was Hergé's real name?

Answer: Georges Prosper Remi

Between 1930 and 2004, Hergé produced 24 volumes of Tintin adventures featuring the eponymous hero and his faithful dog Snowy (Milou in the original French cartoons) as well as Captain Haddock, Professor Calculus and the Thompson Twins. Postage stamps featuring Tintin have been issued by Belgium, France, Netherlands and Democratic Republic of Congo.
6. Mermaids are plenty in movies, but the greatest "half fish" has to be Ethel Merman. For which Irving Berlin musical did she win her first Tony Award?

Answer: Call Me Madam

Merman was nominated for her roles in "Happy Hunting" and "Gypsy" but it was for 1951's "Call Me Madam" she won the award, which also brought her a Golden Globe when she reprised her portrayal of wealthy socialite Sally Adams in the 1953 movie adaptation. Merman had a great Broadway voice but also recorded "The Ethel Merman Disco Album" which featured many of the songs she had recorded set to a disco beat.
7. What was the title of the first solo album by ex-Marillion vocalist Fish?

Answer: Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors

Released in 1990, "Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors" is, up to when this quiz was written, his most successful album and featured a star studded cast of musicians including Jannick Gers of Iron Maiden, Hal Lindes from Dire Straits and John Keeble of Spandau Ballet. "Raingods With Zippos" and "A Feast Of Consequences" are also studio albums by Fish, while "Bouillabaisse" was a compilation album of solo material and Marillion tracks.
8. In the American version of TV show "The Office", which fishy nickname was given to Jim Halpert?

Answer: Big Tuna

Jim, played by John Krasinski, is called Big Tuna solely by Andy (Ed Helms), who gave him the nickname after Jim ate a tuna sandwich. The show ran for nine seasons and won five Emmy awards, two SAG awards and was a two time winner of the American Film Institute Award.
9. In which hobby would one use a fisheye?

Answer: Photography

A fisheye lens allows an extremely wide viewing angle, creating a panoramic image and first became popular with photographers in the 1960s. Fisheyes are also used in security peepholes in doors, allowing the occupant a wider view of the exterior.
10. In 1936, which child rapist and cannibal was electrocuted at Sing Sing prison for the murder of Grace Budd?

Answer: Albert Fish

Fish admitted to the murders of three children aged between four and ten, but was suspected of at least five more. A truly vile person, he once boasted of having had a child in every state, but to this day it is not certain whether he was being truthful or whether he was referring to rapes, cannibalization or murders.

Like fellow band member Marilyn Manson (real name Brian Warner), drummer Ken Wilson also takes his stage name from an object of beauty and a killer, using the name Ginger Fish, from Ginger Rogers and Albert Fish.
