Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1966, The Easybeats had a number six UK hit with 'Friday on My Mind'. What nationality were they?

Answer: Australian

They had another hit in 1968 with 'Hello How Are You', which just scraped in at number 20. Chart positions are taken from the 'Guinness Book of British Hit Singles'.
2. In the rhyme describing children born on each day of the week, what is Friday's child?

Answer: Loving and Giving

Monday's child is fair of face
Tuesday's child is full of grace
Wednesday's child is full of woe
Thursday's child has far to go
Friday's child is loving and giving
Saturday's child works hard for his living
The child that is born on the Sabbath day is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

I was born on a Sunday, so some might say that proves the rhyme wrong.
3. Man Friday is featured in the novel 'Robinson Crusoe' by which of the following authors?

Answer: Daniel Defoe

First published in 1719, it tells the story of a man shipwrecked on an island, who, after many years alone finds a native who becomes his manservant. As he found the native on a Friday, that is the name he bestows on him. The expression has passed into common use for any valuable assistant.
4. The 2003 film 'Freaky Friday' starred which of the following actresses?

Answer: Lindsay Lohan

Jamie Lee Curtis played Lindsay's mother, and their characters accidentally switch bodies for a day leading them to learn to understand the other's point of view. An earlier version of the film was made in 1976 with Jodie Foster playing the daughter.
5. 'Vendredi' is the name for Friday in which language?

Answer: French

In Italian, Friday is Venerdi, in German it is Freitag and it is Viernes in Spanish. English and German share common roots, 'tag' being German for day.
6. The Cure had a number 6 UK hit in 1992, featuring Friday in the title. In what state were they on that day?

Answer: In love

The song was 'Friday I'm in Love'. The group originally got together in 1976 while at school in Crawley, West Sussex. While there have been many changes of personnel over the years, the group's focus has always been their singer/songwriter, Robert Smith.
7. 'Friday Nights' is a 2009 novel written by which of the following writers, also dubbed 'Queen of the Aga Saga'?

Answer: Joanna Trollope

The term 'Aga Saga' was first used by novelist Terence Blacker specifically to describe the works of Joanna Trollope. It has since been used as 'shorthand' for books about middle class family life - the 'Aga' being a cooking range favoured by this type of family. Joanna is a distant relative of the Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope.
8. The rhyme about Solomon Grundy describes various events in his life. What happened to him on Friday?

Answer: Worse

Born on Monday; christened on Tuesday; married on Wednesday; took ill on Thursday; worse on Friday; died on Saturday; buried on Sunday. And that is the end of Solomon Grundy. This is a traditional rhyme with no known author.
9. The 'Friday the 13th' series of films features which of the following characters?

Answer: Jason Voorhees

Michael Myers is from 'Halloween', Leatherface from 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' and Freddy is from 'A Nightmare on Elm Street'. All the films have had sequels, in some cases numerous ones, and all feature a series of killings, often of teenagers.
10. In most Germanic languages, Friday is named after the goddess Freya. From which mythology does she come?

Answer: Norse

Germanic languages include English and German, giving us Friday and Freitag. Romance languages name the day from the Latin 'dies Veneris', the day of Venus. Consequently, the French, Italian and Spanish names all have the same common root.
