Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I find alcohol an essential for viewing fairies. Which famous Swiss beverage is known as "The Green Fairy"?

Answer: Absinthe

There are many myths and legends about the hallucinogenic properties of absinthe and it has at various times been banned in USA, France, Belgium and its home country of Switzerland. In Baz Luhrmann's 2001 movie, "Moulin Rouge!", the Green Fairy of absinthe was played by Kylie Minogue, but her scream/laugh was the voice of Ozzy Osbourne.

Not the first name that springs to mind when one thinks of green fairies!
2. Larry Wallis was one of the founding members of rock band Motorhead, whilst still a member of which band that played the first Glastonbury Free Festival in 1971?

Answer: Pink Fairies

Prior to joining Pink Fairies, Wallis was briefly a member of UFO, having replaced original guitarist Mick Bolton, and later became a respected producer for underground punk bands. One of the founding members of Pink Fairies was Steve Peregrin Took, who formed the band after leaving Marc Bolan's Tyrannosaurus Rex. Pink Fairies have reformed with various members several times and released their first new album for 20 years, "Naked Radio" in 2017.
3. In which of Shakespeare's works would we meet Oberon and Titania, the king and queen of the fairies?

Answer: A Midsummer Night's Dream

Written in late 16th century, "A Midsummer Night's Dream", is still one of Shakespeare's most popular works and in it, Oberon and Titania are engaged in a matrimonial quarrel over an Indian changeling boy, resulting in the use of a magical potion, much falling in love and lots of hilarity.
4. In "The Legend of Zelda" video game series, what is the name of Link's fairy guide?

Answer: Navi

As Link is Hylian, and not an actual member of the Kokiri tribe, he does not have a fairy to watch over him, so the Great Deku Tree summons Navi to help him on his quest to save the land of Hyrule from Ganondorf, king of the Gerudo tribe. All of which will probably make no sense to you if you haven't played the Zelda games.
5. Who or what is or was Gala Fairydean?

Answer: Scottish football club

Gala Fairydean, from Galashiels, merged with another local club, Gala Rovers, in 2013 to become Gala Fairydean Rovers when the Lowland Football League was formed. Their last major honour before the merger was when they won the East of Scotland Premier Division in 1991.
6. Which famous author was fooled by photographs of the Cottingley Fairies?

Answer: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

The Cottingley Fairies photos were taken in 1917 by two cousins aged 16 and nine. The series of five photos, showing the girls interacting with fairies, were seen by "Sherlock Holmes" author, Conan Doyle who pronounced them clear evidence of psychic phenomena.

It wasn't until 1983, that the girls, now aged 82 and 75, admitted that they were fake and had kept quiet at the time due to the embarrassment of fooling a great man like Sir Arthur.
7. Off the coast of which country would one be most likely to see fairy penguins, which average just 13 inches in height?

Answer: Australia

The fairy penguin, also known as the little penguin or blue penguin, is a common sight off the coasts of both Australia and New Zealand, where the close proximity of humans results in many encounters. Often these are harmless situations such as penguins nesting in cellars, but there have been several instances of penguins being hit by vehicles on highways and attacked by domestic cats and dogs.
8. In which Gilbert and Sullivan opera was a fairy banished from fairy land for marrying a mortal?

Answer: Iolanthe

"Iolanthe" opened in 1882 in London and is a satirical look at British society and the processes of law and government. When Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister of UK in 1979, the heavyweight press jokingly employed the line "This comes of women interfering in politics", used in the opera by the Earl of Mountararat when addressing fairies Celia and Lelia.
9. In 2011, which country issued coins depicting the tooth fairy?

Answer: Canada

The 2011 quarter was available from Royal Canadian Mint as part of a $10 gift set. The set came complete with a small envelope for putting the coin under the pillow of any child expecting a visit from the tooth fairy.
10. According to a 1970 song by Black Sabbath, what do fairies wear?

Answer: Boots

We started the interesting info with Ozzy in question one, and we end with him and surely one of the best Ozzy quotes ever. "Fairies Wear Boots" was on Black Sabbath's mega selling 1970 album "Paranoid". Bass player Geezer Butler has said the song is about a fight with a gang of skinheads, however Ozzy said in his "I Am Ozzy" autobiography, that he has no idea what the song is about, but everybody tells him that he wrote the lyrics. Country rock band Blackberry Smoke often do a great version of this song in their live shows.
