The song was released on the Charlie Daniels Band's tenth album 'Million Mile Reflections' and shortly afterwards as a single. It tells the story of a boy called Johnny and his fiddle-playing contest with the Devil, who is in Georgia 'looking for a soul to steal'. Johnny outplays the Devil, wins a golden fiddle and, according to their deal, most importantly keeps his soul. It was a huge hit for the band and made it into several charts including number one in the US and Canadian country charts.

The book 'Devil in a Blue Dress', published in 1990, is the first of Walter Mosley's series of crime novels, set in the 1940s to 1960s, to feature Los Angeles private detective Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins. In the film, the role is played by Denzel Washington, with other leads played by Jennifer Beale, Don Cheadle and Tom Sizemore.

Author Walter Mosley has written several novels and non-fiction books; the fourteenth book in the 'Easy' Rawlins series, 'Rose Gold', was published in 2014.

Devils on horseback is a savoury appetiser, hors d'oeuvre, call it what you will. It is typically a prune or date, wrapped in bacon and either baked, fried or grilled on skewers. There are many variations on the recipe including stuffing the date or prune with cheese, chutney or anything else that suits your taste. On the same principle there is also another savoury called the very opposite, angels on horseback, which is oysters wrapped in bacon.

The thorny dragon (Moloch horridus), aka the thorny devil or mountain devil, is a lizard native to Australia. A very unusual-looking animal, it is so called because its body is covered in thorny-like scales which, as well as offering protection, help collect moisture and dew for the animal to drink. It lives in arid conditions and can grow up to around 7-8 inches in length and achieve a lifespan of up to twenty years. The 'thorns' are an effective deterrent to predators, and its diet consists entirely of ants, which it consumes in large quantities.

The Red Devil apple is interesting, as it looks good with its dark red fruits, and the flesh is streaked with pink, which works its way from the outside of the apple towards the middle. Because of this, it also adds visual interest to the fruit when cooked in a dish or made into juice, which keeps the pink coloration.

It has an excellent flavour, with just the hint of strawberries. The tree generally yields a heavy crop and is very resistant to disease, making it a good choice for the organic gardener.

It is self-fertilising, so is an ideal tree for the smaller garden without the need to plant another apple tree to aid pollination.

Towards the end of the book Harry, Ron and Hermione were trying to get to the Philosopher's Stone to prevent it being stolen. The Stone was protected by a series of different Charms set by various Professors. After lulling three-headed dog Fluffy to sleep by playing the flute Hagrid had given to Harry and getting through the trap door he was guarding, they found themselves entwined in a magical plant Hermione recognised as Devil's Snare. Narrowly escaping being strangled by its tentacles, Hermione remembered the plant hated light and fire, so she cast a Charm of Bluebell Flames to overcome it.

Devilled simply means to be cooked with hot seasoning. There are numerous recipes, but it is largely down to personal choice. Ingredients such as mustard and Worcestershire sauce are generally used, with a fair sprinkling of pepper, even curry powder should you wish, with a little liquid, usually stock, to mix into a sauce. Devilled kidneys were a familiar breakfast dish in England in late Victorian and Edwardian times, when the sideboards in more wealthy homes fairly groaned with all manner of hot dishes at breakfast time! Many foods can be devilled, the only limit is your imagination; a tasty vegetarian alternative is devilled mushrooms, for example, and devilled eggs are a tasty cold food for a summer buffet.

They all starred in 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show', but it was Charles Gray who played the part of Satanic cult leader Mocata in 'The Devil Rides Out', a horror film based on Dennis Wheatley's 1934 book of the same title.

Charles Gray (1928-2000) was born and died in England. He had several stage, television and film credits to his name including playing James Bond supervillain Ernst Stavro Blofeld in 'Diamonds Are Forever' (1971) to Sean Connery's Bond. He had also played Sherlock Holmes's brother Mycroft on film and television.

This wonderful quotation appears in Wilde's play 'The Duchess of Padua', a tragedy set in the Italian city of Padua, written in 1883 and one of Wilde's lesser-known works. Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin on 16 October 1854. His most famous works include the play 'The Importance of Being Earnest' and his only novel, 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'. He is also famously remembered for his relationship with his lover, Lord Alfred 'Bosie' Douglas, and his failed libel case against Bosie's father, the Marquess of Queensberry, which led to his being charged with 'gross indecency' and sentenced to two years imprisonment. Following this he lived in France and Italy in impoverished circumstances until his death in Paris in 1900 at the age of 46.

Oscar Wilde can be credited with many clever and witty quotations including the immortal 'Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much', 'I can resist everything except temptation' and (from 'Lady Windermere's Fan') 'Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes'.
