Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A point of congestion or blockage

Answer: Bottle Neck

Similar to how the neck of a literal bottle restricts and narrows the flow of a liquid within that bottle, any object, terrain, or phenomenon that restricts or impedes the performance or capacity of a particular activity is metaphorically referred to as a "bottle neck".

For example, a narrow stretch of highway will often limit the number of lanes of vehicular traffic, and during busy times of the day all of the vehicles approaching this narrowing must slow down to a great extent so that a traffic jam is created.

This narrowing of the highway might be referred to as a "bottle neck".
2. A tablet candy from the Willy Wonka brand

Answer: Bottle Caps

Bottle Caps are traditionally made in the shape and size of real metal caps found on glass soda bottles. The flavors represent traditional soda flavors: cola, root beer, grape, orange, and cherry. The consistency or texture of the candy is similar to that of Smarties (Rockets) and SweeTarts. In the past, Bottle Caps had a lemon-lime flavor, representative of sodas such as Sprite and 7-Up, but this flavor was apparently discontinued and replaced with cherry. Furthermore, there was at one time a variation of Bottle Caps called Fizzy Bottle Caps or Fizzy Jerkz that contained CO2 so that the candy sizzled in one's mouth to create the effect of drinking a soda.

Willy Wonka Co. was the originator of this candy, but the company was bought out by Nestle, which continues to use the Willy Wonka name on the original Willy Wonka products.
3. A song by The Police

Answer: Message in a Bottle

"Message in a Bottle" was released in September of 1979 as a single from The Police's 1979 album "Regatta de Blanc" and was composed by Sting, the lead singer and bass guitarist for the band. While the song climbed to number one on the charts in Spain, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, it reached only position seventy-four on the United States' "Billboard" Hot 100 chart. "Rolling Stone" magazine has listed the song as number 65 on its "100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time" in praise of Andy Summers' guitar playing during the recording of the song, and the drumming on "Message in a Bottle" has been praised by a number of critics as a representation of Stewart Copeland's best and most complex work.
4. A genus of oceanic dolphins

Answer: Bottlenose

There are three species of bottlenose dolphins: the common bottlenose dolphin, the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin, and the Burrunan dolphin. The name, obviously, is reflective of the distinctive shape of dolphin's nose and mouth. They typically congregate in pods of ten to thirty members in warmer salt water areas, but have been spotted alone and in smaller or larger groups.

They are some of the most intelligent animals on earth, demonstrating skills in mimicry, language use, memory, monitoring self-behavior, recognition of symbols and numerical values, and use of tools.

They also possess self-recognition in reflective objects.
5. A symptom of infection in sheep and goats

Answer: Bottle Jaw

Bottle Jaw is a swelling that occurs under the lower jaws of sheep and goats because of an accumulation of fluid. This condition typically represents an edema in the tissue of the lower jaw initiated by anemia. Anemia in goats and sheep is usually caused by blood-sucking parasites, such as internal ones like barber pole worms and flukes and external ones such as lice, fleas, and ticks. Occasionally, this condition can be the result of ongoing blood loss from internal bleeding or external wounds or the result of a poor diet or malnutrition suffered by a female during pregnancy or nursing.
6. A party game

Answer: Spin the Bottle

Spin the bottle is usually played by a group of people who sit or stand in a circle. The game has traditionally been played most often by teenagers as its purpose is to arouse romantic or sexual interest or excitement. The method of play requires that the players take turns spinning a glass bottle that rests on its side in the center of the circle of players.

Whenever the bottle quits spinning, the individual who spun the bottle must kiss the person the bottle's mouth or neck is pointing toward.

Some variations require the two players innocently hug each other while other variations move toward the other extreme and require the two players to kiss each other with open mouths and with tongues. Furthermore, some combine spin the bottle with another party game called truth or dare.

The origin of this game is unclear, but many believe it to have been born in the United States during the early twentieth century.
7. A construct commonly believed to capture or ward off bad spirits

Answer: Bottle Tree

A bottle tree consists of a small tree or bush, living or dead, with ends of limbs that have been pushed into glass bottles. A bottle tree may also be a wooden pole or metal rod driven into the ground and covered with nails or pegs or stems that are pushed into glass bottles. Frequently, the bottles are made of colored glass, typically blue, for decorative or artistic purposes, and these "trees" are found in various gardens or yards all over the world.

Originally, the bottle tree was created in Africa or the Middle East--stories vary--to capture evil spirits or djinn.

The belief was that these beings would be attracted to the bottles, enter them, and then not be able to discern how to exit them or they would not even be physically able to exit them.
8. A firework propelled into the sky

Answer: Bottle Rocket

A bottle rocket is a firework whose rocket is attached to a stabilizing stick that is inserted into the ground vertically so that the firework's payload is at the firework's top and pointing toward the sky. The burning fuel (usually black powder) thrusts the firework into the sky, where it explodes and scatters sparkling embers, various colors of "stars", or confetti.

While manufacturers of bottle rockets advise against it, many people insert the stabilizing stick into a bottle that is placed on the ground or held in a person's hand. Thus, a bottle is often used as a launch site, and this practice is what has led to the sky rocket's more popular name--"bottle rocket". Launching sky rockets from bottles is not advised because of the increased risk of burns and the added risk of a faulty rocket exploding before lift off and propelling shattered glass in numerous directions and at high speeds.
9. A common name for a variety of different species of flies

Answer: Green Bottle

The green bottle fly or greenbottle fly is referred to as a blow fly by some. It is found in most areas of the globe and is easily recognizable as it is slightly larger than the common housefly and has a blue-green or sometimes gold abdomen. The adult female lays her eggs in rotting or wounded flesh or in fecal material, and the maggots thrive on this material. Because the maggots will avoid eating live flesh, they have often been used for medical purposes in the removal of dead or septic flesh. Furthermore, understanding the progression of larval stages in these maggots has been tremendously useful in forensics and the determination of a time of death for some cadavers.
10. An alternative source of air for divers

Answer: Pony Bottle

A pony bottle is a smaller cylinder or tank that is attached to the back or side of a scuba diver's larger regular air tank. A pony bottle comes with its own individual air regulator and, therefore, may be used in an emergency, such as if a diver depletes the air in the regular tank.
