Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You get a correction notice on a quiz you have written on the book "Gone With the Wind". The message, which is rude, consists of "Read the book, dummy!!!!" What is the most appropriate response?

Answer: Send the message to an Editor

Rudeness in correction messages is not tolerated in FunTrivia. The best thing to do in this case is to forward the message to an Editor (if they haven't already caught it), who will then reprimand the sender of the message. It is possible that the individual in question has already been warned about such behavior, in which case the administration may decide that termination is necessary. Responding with a rude statement of your own is both childish and non-productive.
2. You have submitted a quiz and it seems to be taking an awfully long time for it to be put online. It's appropriate to write to an Editor every day and ask what's taking so long.

Answer: False

This is called pestering. You should realize that all Editors are volunteers and have hundreds of quizzes to look at. Sometimes the queue of quizzes waiting to be edited can reach 100, especially in popular categories like Movies, TV, and Music. Pestering an Editor will not get your quiz online any faster.
3. You come across a user name that you think is offensive. What should you do?

Answer: Notify an Editor

Chances are, if a user name offends you, it offends others. We Editors would appreciate it if you notified us of its existence so that we can tell the person to change it. If you try to remedy the situation on your own by writing directly to the user of the offensive name, it is not likely to be satisfactorily fixed; the person will likely ignore you or respond with something impolite.
4. You're taking a quiz on edible fungi and come across a fact that you believe to be wrong. Which of these is the most appropriate correction notice?

Answer: "Hi. I enjoyed your quiz, but I believe you made a mistake..."

Again, the Golden Rule applies: think of how you would want a correction notice to you to be sent. Always be polite and considerate; online, TYPING IN ALL CAPS is considered hollering, which is not polite. "There's a mistake in your quiz", while it may be polite, does not specify what the problem is; you must indicate what specifically you think is wrong, and why.

It's even better if you can cite a source to back it up. For instance, in the example given, a good correction notice would be: "I enjoyed your quiz, but I believe your answer to Q5 is wrong; I just read a book on mushrooms and it said that Beefsteak fungi are NOT edible." A conscientious quizmaker will do some research, hoping to find a definitive answer.
5. You have submitted a quiz you have made on the movie "Jaws", but it keeps getting rejected. The Editor has pointed out mistakes you feel are silly, such as commas, capitalization, and so forth. What is the most likely reason for this?

Answer: The Editor wants you to learn something

Editors don't "pick" on people for the fun of it, nor do we take out our frustrations on quizmakers. Chances are if a quiz keeps coming back to you that the Editor is trying to get you to examine it carefully and learn from your mistakes. Editors will fix the occasional typo or misspelling, but if we fix all of your mistakes, you're not learning anything. Most Editors enjoy teaching; some are English teachers and are genuinely concerned with teaching you to write properly, not only in FunTrivia but in the "real world" also.
6. You've just taken a quiz which you believe is truly horrible. Which is the best thing to do?

Answer: Rate it "Very Poor" or "Poor"

It should be obvious that sending the rude message to the quizmaker is the wrong answer; so is asking the Editors why they would place such a quiz online. You could just do nothing, but the most appropriate response is to rate the quiz. We devised the rating system and encourage people to use it for a reason; it classifies quizzes according to their popularity with you, the players. That's why you see those little star icons next to some quizzes- it means that other players have indicated that these quizzes are outstanding in some way.
7. You have posted a topic on the Chat Boards, but a moderator has closed it. Should you post it again?

Answer: No

If the mod tells you where or how to post the topic correctly, you should follow those instructions. If you're not sure what to do, send a private message to the mod asking how they would like you to handle the issue.

And then do that.
8. You're a big fan of the band Metallica and have made a Metallica quiz to submit to Music. It's okay to say somewhere in your quiz "If you're a fellow Metallica fan and would like to chat, e-mail me at...."

Answer: False

It's NEVER okay to give out personal information, such as your e-mail address, phone number, etc., in a quiz. While most people who exchange such information do so for honest reasons, such as making friends or chatting, there are always dishonest people who could do harm with such information. We stress that Quizzyland is a safe, family-friendly site where members are unlikely to encounter unpleasant or predatory people.
9. You come across a quiz on a topic that you consider yourself an expert in. You believe there to be a factual error in the quiz. You send a correction notice to the author, who replies that there's no error, and refuses to fix the quiz. How should you handle this situation?

Answer: politely notify an Editor of what you believe to be the correct facts

The word that should have been the giveaway is "politely". Everything you do in Quizzyland should be done politely, especially when communicating with other players and Editors. There are many instances in which players disagree over facts in a quiz, and sometimes Editors get involved.

As with any correction notice, make sure you point out exactly what you believe the problem is and why. Provide references if possible. It is never acceptable to harass, threaten, or intimidate another player, any of which may get you removed from the site.
10. You really want to be a FunTrivia Editor. What should you do?

Answer: all of these

All Editors who are chosen have first established themselves as good quizmakers. This is essential, as it shows that you can write and communicate with others, which is basically what being an Editor is about. It doesn't hurt to put the word out that you're willing, but please don't pester the staff - there is very little turnover at FT, so positions don't become open very often. If you really want to be an Editor, my advice to you is to make yourself noticed by creating not just good, but outstanding, quizzes.
