Quizmaker Tune-Ups Trivia Questions

1. What is the religious orientation of FunTrivia?

From Quiz
Treading (Carefully) Where Saints Have Trod

Answer: FunTrivia takes no position on religion

There is no way to know the number and variety of religions represented by players on FunTrivia. It is never safe to assume that the player taking your quiz shares your religious beliefs. It is always safe to treat every religion with great respect. The writer must be careful not to advocate for a particular religious position, belief or practice.

2. "The Nabob Tailed Me". Which would be the *MOST* obvious category, based upon the meaning of the word nabob?

From Quiz Look What the Cat Dragged In

Answer: History

A nabob was originally a high official during the Mughal Empire (India, 1526-1857). Soon after the English took over control of several main trade posts in India, the word nabob became also a nickname for any European (mostly English) businessman gaining a fortune in East Asia. The meaning shifted even further away to any very rich or mighty person. So the most evident category for a quiz with the title "The Nabob Tailed Me" would be "History", although you're welcome to try this title in categories such as People, Movies or Literature. Humanities could also a valid alternative, as there is a subcategory "Unusual and Obscure Words". As for the verb "to tail", it means (in this context) "to follow and observe closely a person". Finding a nabob in the category "Animals", "Religion" or "Video Games" would be quite surprising. If you could concoct a quiz in any of these three categories with the title "The Nabob Tailed Me", chances are you would get the comment "Look what the cat dragged in".

3. The Humanities category includes the subcategory of "Unusual and Obscure Words", so I can possibly submit a Scrabble quiz there because while playing Scrabble you use a lot of weird words. What category should this quiz actually be in?

From Quiz Oops!

Answer: Hobbies

Since the quiz is talking about Scrabble, it's best to put it in Hobbies. Hobbies has a category for Scrabble under "Board Games". The World category includes a variety of topics concerning flags, languages, and much more global trivia. If you just submit a quiz on weird words, it belongs in Humanities.

4. A friend of yours sends you a congratulatory message about your first quiz, and mentions that they have been working a quiz for months, and it still isn't online. What is the best response to give him/her?

From Quiz Your Quiz Has Been Placed Online!

Answer: I know you can do it. Just keep at it and it will be online in no time!

If somebody is upset about not getting a quiz online, don't make them feel bad about it. It is best to encourage your friend and tell them they can do it, and they will get it online. A good friend is someone who doesn't brag about how much better their quiz-making skills are.

5. This question contains one of those subtle grammatical traps you can so easily fall into. Someone who is afraid of blushing is known as an ______ ?

Answer: erythrophobe

6. Jane made a quiz on the television show 'The Simpsons'. Should she put it in Television or Entertainment?

8. When discussing the principal religious text of Islam, is it best to call it the Koran, the Qur'an, the Quran?

From Quiz Treading (Carefully) Where Saints Have Trod

Answer: any of these spellings

The discussion about the proper name for this holy book arises from the difficulty of transliterating a word from its language of origin into another language. The name of the book means, literally, "the recitation." The name reflects the belief that the angel Gabriel dictated its contents to the Prophet Muhammad. The AP Stylebook recommends Quran. The Chicago Manual of Style recommends Koran with Qur'an as an alternative. The Arab American News uses Qur'an. The American American Heritage dictionary, Webster's New World College Dictionary dictionary, and Oxford English Dictionary all endorse Koran. Quiz writers are free to use whichever word they prefer but, once made, this choice should then be used consistently. This rule holds true from any word that is transliterated from another language of origin, and, yes, this includes the Bible. The Bible was originally written in Hebrew, translated to Greek, then to Latin, and finally to other world languages. Many different forms of the same name can be found, and all are acceptable.

9. After you pick the appropriate category for your quiz, you read the special instructions about it and notice that it is called a 'closed category'. What does it mean when a category is closed?

From Quiz Let Me Quiz Your Quiz

Answer: No new quizzes are accepted

Some of the categories are more popular than others. As a result, they end up with many similar quizzes, which sometimes even ask the same questions. Occasionally, some categories end up having too many quizzes and they are marked as 'closed'. When a category is closed, no new quizzes are accepted into it, so you should always check before you start a quiz if its category is closed (it will be mentioned).

10. If I make a quiz on high school level French what category does it go in?

From Quiz Oops!

Answer: World

Even though it is designed for high schoolers, it should not go into For Children. For Children is for 6-12 year olds, and most high school students are no younger than 13. The General category contains roughly a dozen top level subcategories other than mixed trivia. Brain Teasers are mostly word problems, but include completely unique quizzes also. Be careful when submitting a French quiz, French is a restricted category.

11. Uh oh! You just noticed that your quiz is in the wrong subcategory! What is the best way to fix the error without having your quiz taken offline?

From Quiz Your Quiz Has Been Placed Online!

Answer: Ask the editor who put it online to fix it

Never delete a quiz just because there is a single error! Do not just ignore errors, either. That could cause problems in the future. It would be best to ask an editor to fix it for you, however. When you try changing the subcategory, the quiz will be taken offline, so you have to resubmit it. An editor can fix the problem and get it back online in no time, so you don't have to wait through the queue again!

12. In a crossword, what is an island?

From Quiz Basic Crossword Creation

Answer: A piece of crossword that does not connect to anything else

Having an island in your crossword is basically like having two separate crosswords in the same grid. You must always make sure every part of your crossword can be connected.

13. The clue is in the question. The time it takes the earth to complete EXACTLY one orbit of the sun is...

From Quiz Impossible General Knowledge

Answer: 365.242199 days

There's a bit of a clue in the word EXACTLY isn't there?

14. Here are some true and false items. Which one is properly formed?

From Quiz Ready or Not? Literature and General Questions

Answer: George and Rita escaped from the witch's castle by tying sheets together.

Now, though true and false items (as well as yes/no questions) should be limited, when you form them, please make sure you read them out loud and they are correctly punctuated. Remember that a true/false sentence is a statement. A yes/no answer is a question. Yes, this might seem obvious but as editors we receive many of these per day and remind people constantly. The words true/false do NOT need to be written out as the software takes care of that.

15. Where should a quiz on the television show 'The Simpsons' go?

From Quiz How to Make a Funtrivia Quiz Quiz

Answer: In television category, Simpsons subcategory

Television is good, but if the quiz can fit into a subcategory, use the subcategory!

16. What is the number one reason that Quizzyland editors reject quizzes?

From Quiz Basic Quizmaking Facts

Answer: Incorrect grammar, spelling and punctuation

If you play all of the quizzes in this category, hopefully your quiz won't be rejected!

17. When citing to a biblical source, why is it important to specify the text by chapter and verse?

From Quiz Treading (Carefully) Where Saints Have Trod

Answer: Different biblical accounts may differ from one another

At times, when the same thing is described in two different places in the Bible, the accounts differ. The two accounts of creation in Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 differ in many respects. They each use a consistently different name for God. They each have a somewhat different order of creative events. The Lord's Prayer is found in both Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4. Only the version in Matthew includes the doxology (the part about the kingdom and the power and the glory). The Ten Commandments appear in both Exodus 20:2-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21. The two versions put some of the commandments in a different order. It is prudent to specify the chapter(s) and verse(s) to which you are referring in your questions and interesting information.

18. Yes! You just got your first compliment! They told you it was wonderful, and they look forward to many more from you. What is the best thing to do next?

From Quiz Your Quiz Has Been Placed Online!

Answer: Respond to it

The most polite thing to do is respond to the message. You can delete it afterward, but it is nice to thank somebody for a compliment they have given you. There is no need to report a compliment to the editors! A compliment is a good thing, after all. Don't brag about it, either. Some friends who don't have a quiz online may feel bad, especially your friend from question one who has tried for months to get one online!

19. This time the clue is in the options. In the USA, which was the 16th state to join the Union?

From Quiz Impossible General Knowledge

Answer: Tennessee

Yes, you guessed it by elimination (I hope) given that Vancouver is in Canada and Alaska and Hawaii were numbers 49 and 50 respectively.

20. Mary made a quiz based upon 'Guinness Book of World Records' people. Where should it go?

From Quiz Where to Put the Quiz?

Answer: General

There is a subcategory for people who have held world records in the General category, so the quizzes should be submitted there.

21. What's the BEST reason to create a quiz?

From Quiz Making Quizzes

Answer: You know the topic and there aren't many quizzes on it

Don't create one because everyone else has! Create something unique! And you shouldn't make a quiz on a topic you're not familiar with. Your answers may be incorrect and when someone sends you a correction notice you may not be able to understand.

22. In writing a quiz or question about the Church of Christ, Scientist, what does one properly call their clergy?

From Quiz Treading (Carefully) Where Saints Have Trod

Answer: nothing, there are no clergy

Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, "ordained" the Bible and her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" as the "Pastor" of her church in 1895. While other churches had/have ordained clergy, Christian Science has none other than these two books. Some lay leaders called Readers conduct Sunday and mid-week services. Some other lay leaders called Christian Science Practitioners work with individuals who seek their counsel; these practitioners are paid by their clients and not be the church. The Church of Christ, Scientist, is a lay church.

23. "Reuben Galloped on the Pampa". Although this title does not seem very inviting, it could fit into many categories. If you would choose this title for a Geography quiz, where could this fit *MORE* than into the other subcategories?

From Quiz Look What the Cat Dragged In

Answer: South America

The pampas are vast tracts of grassy land in South America, especially in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. The best choice is thus South America or its subdivision Argentina. You might also consider Physical Geography and ask questions about ten different grassy terrains: the South American pampas, the African steppe, the Hungarian puszta... The subcategory Physical Geography concentrates on various types of geographical features, such as volcanoes, deserts, islands, peninsulas, geysers... Relocating the pampa to the Polar Regions is not a way to get your geography quiz on line. This would only earn you a rejection. Creative minds could try "Reuben Galloped on the Pampa" in Cities of the World, if concentrating on South-American cities near the pampas. But such artistic liberty might earn you the comment "Look what the cat dragged in".

24. What was once a great trivia question can turn into a slew of correction notes. An example is the question below: The major league baseball player who was first alphabetically in the history of the league held which major career record?

From Quiz What Not to Do in Quizzes

Answer: Home runs

Yes, Hank Aaron held the first spot alphabetically in the major leagues' players list. And yes, he held the record for most home runs. But in 2004, David Aardsma became the first player alphabetically and in 2007, Barry Bonds became the home run leader. Because of the passage of time, the records are no longer valid (and eventually, neither will be the ones in this paragraph). I saw another, similar one, in one of Funtrivia's earlier quizzes, asking which team a football player played for. The multiple choice answers included the team he played for at the time the quiz was written as the correct answer, and the team he had been traded to since as an incorrect answer. Fortunately, this kind of question is rarely allowed anymore.

25. Usually, I try to save my quiz after every question. There is a very good reason for doing so. Why do I save my quiz so often?

From Quiz The Events Leading to This Quiz...

Answer: So I don't lose any of my hard work

If you don't save often, you might lose some of your work. Computers crash, screens freeze, and FunTrivia might have problems that will cause your work to disappear. I've personally had this happen: you write the perfect question, even two or three, maybe more, and you go to save, and the site has problems and you lose all your hard work! This can be prevented by saving and saving often. Nobody likes losing their hard work. Of course, I didn't lose anything writing this quiz, but that's because I saved it often!

26. How would you correctly write the following sentence describing a murder victim?

From Quiz Count Me In!

Answer: The victim's body was riddled with approximately seventy bullets.

When quoting an exact number, it is always necessary to use figures, but when stating an approximation you must write out the number using words. Furthermore, there is no FunTrivia restriction on using approximations and estimations in either the question or the interesting information, where it's relevant of course.
