Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the connection between a 1995 drama film, which is said to have led to the release of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, the Chinese honeysuckle (Combretum indicum) and Yangon, former capital of Burma (Myanmar)?

Answer: Rangoon

The film is called "Beyond Rangoon", starred Patricia Arquette and followed an American tourist who took a holiday in Burma during the 8888 Uprising in which Suu Kyi was involved. The vine known as the Chinese honeysuckle is also known as the Rangoon creeper. Lastly, Rangoon is the former name for the city now called Yangon.
2. What links the eleven Victoria Crosses, the most awarded at any one battle, with Michael Caine singing "Men of Harlech" at assegai-wielding impi?

Answer: Rorke's Drift

Michael Caine starred in the 1964 film "Zulu" which depicted the Battle of Rorke's Drift when 150 British soldiers successfully fought off some 4,000 Zulu warriors. The assegai was a short stabbing spear, also known as the iklwa, used by the Zulu impi (or armed body of men) at the battle.
3. What links the wine-making process by which the lees (dead yeast and debris) is moved to the neck of a champagne bottle with Jim Carrey's character in the 1995 film "Batman Forever"?

Answer: Riddling

In the traditional method of making champagne, a secondary fermentation of the wine is carried out after bottling. That is what gives the wine its fizz. Once the wine has aged, the sediment is moved to the neck of the bottle by riddling. These days the neck is then frozen, a plug of wine containing the sediment is removed and the bottle is re-corked with its fizz intact.

Riddle me this, riddle me that...Jim Carrey played the villainous Riddler against Val Kilmer's Batman in the film directed by Joel Schumacher.
4. What connects a major south-flowing European river, a Scottish gutter and a British steamboat which sank during a Caribbean hurricane in 1867?

Answer: Rhone

The Rhone River has its source in Switzerland and flows through south-east France to the Mediterranean. The Scottish gutter is a rhone. Eighty ships, including the RMS Rhone, were destroyed in the area by that hurricane. It now provides one of the better-known dive sites in the Caribbean.
5. What is the link between a bottle of wine and a Biblical king of Judah?

Answer: Rehoboam

The Rehoboam is 4.5 litre bottle, which is the equivalent of six standard wine bottles. During Rehoboam's reign, the ten northern tribes split from the United Monarchy of Israel to form the Kingdom of Israel and leaving Rehoboam to form the Kingdom of Judah. Jerusalem became the capital city of Judah a couple of centuries later.
6. What name connects a master of the courts with a master of the High Renaissance period?

Answer: Raphael

The master of the courts is Rafael Nadal, the Spanish tennis player who won a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as well as many Grand Slam tournaments. The artist and architect Raphael (or Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino) was active in the early 16th century and, along with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, is considered one of the great masters of the period.
7. What word links Saturn's second-largest moon with a flightless bird?

Answer: Rhea

The Saturn moon takes its name after the Titan goddess of the same name. In Greek mythology, Rhea is daughter of Gaia and Uranus. The flightless bird also gets its name from the goddess, whose name in Greek means 'ground'. The two species of rhea are native to South America.
8. Who is the link between the countries Zambia and Zimbabwe and the diamond company De Beers?

Answer: Rhodes

Cecil Rhodes founded De Beers in 1888 and was its first chairman. He also gave his name to the area which now forms Zambia and Zimbabwe. The two countries are divided by the Zambezi River, with the area to the north being known as Northern Rhodesia until 1964 when it became Zambia. Southern Rhodesia became Rhodesia for a time after 1964 before eventually changing its name to Zimbabwe in 1980, after gaining independence from Britain.
9. Which of these films starring Michael Douglas is linked to almonds, apples and apricots?

Answer: The War of the Roses

How are they linked? The fruit trees all belong to the rose family Rosaceae. A number of other commercial fruits fall into this family including pears, cherries, peaches, raspberries, quinces and strawberries.

The 1989 film "The War of the Roses" was based on the book of the same name by Warren Adler and also starred Kathleen Turner. It is a black comedy based on a marriage falling apart and the ensuing divorce battle. The surname of the divorcing couple is Rose. The title alludes to the dynastic wars between the Houses of Lancaster and York during the 15th century, known as the Wars of the Roses (which could have been another clue).
10. What connects a ship blown up in New Zealand by French agents in 1985 with a British hard rock band which had singles like "Since You Been Gone" and "Stone Cold"?

Answer: Rainbow

The Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior was sunk by the French government in order to stop it sailing to French Polynesia to protest the French nuclear testing programme. One person was killed. The French initially condemned the terrorist attack, however two of their agents were caught with Swiss passports as they tried to leave the country. The French Prime Minister eventually admitted responsibility.

The rock group Rainbow was formed by Ritchie Blackmore when he left the band Deep Purple in 1975. Rainbow was active in two periods up to 1997 and its songs continued to be played occasionally by former band members since the band split.
