Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before I head out to Sierra Leone, I change my money into Leones. As I look at the back of the 1000 Leone note, what piece of modern technology do I see? (Note to self: Call cable guy about bad reception.)

Answer: Satellite Dish

The 1000 Leone has Bai Bureh on the front, and a satellite dish on the back. Bai Bureh led a rebellion against British rule in 1898. The dam is on the reverse of the 5000 Leone note. All of the currency has the national seal, which has three lions on it. The security watermark on the currency is also the head of a lion.
2. On the plane to Sierra Leone, I met a film crew. Based on films that were shot between 2000 and 2012, what type of movie are they likely to be making?

Answer: Documentary

Of the 33 films made between 2000 and 2012, 25 of them (75 percent) were documentaries. Many deal with the aftermath of the civil war. Titles include "Diamonds, Guns, and Rice" (2006) and "Echoes of War" (2004).
3. As I exit the plane in Freetown, I see the flag waving over the terminal. What is the top color on the flag?

Answer: Green

The flag of Sierra Leone is green, white and blue, in that order. Unlike many other African flags, it does not contain black. The green stands for the agriculture, mountains and natural resources. The blue represents Freetown Harbor. The white stands for unity and justice.
4. I go through customs, and the officer greets me in the official language of Sierra Leone. What is he speaking?

Answer: English

As a former British colony, English is the national language. Sierra Leone gained its independence from Britain in 1960. French is spoken in Guinea, a neighbor of Sierra Leone. Mende is the most common language in the country, with 1.5 million speakers. "Bua" means "Hello" in Mende. Other common languages spoken in Sierra Leone include Themne, Krio, Limba, Kuranko and Kono.
5. I am starving, so I head to the nearest restaurant and ask for a typical meal. What is the waiter likely to bring?

Answer: Peanut Stew over Rice

Rice is the staple food in Sierra Leonian cooking, eaten at almost every meal. Cassava is also an important ingredient in West African cooking, and is the basis for Fufu. Peanut stew has been called the national dish of Sierra Leone. Food tends to be heavily spiced, as in much of West Africa, especially with peppers. Hummus, a dish of ground chickpeas, is common in the Middle East. Sashimi is sliced raw fish, and is popular in Japan. Feijoada, a bean and meat stew, is the national dish of Brazil.
6. Along with my meal, the waiter brings a slightly alcoholic beverage called Poyo. What is it made of?

Answer: Palm Wine

Poyo comes from coconut palms. It is not distilled or fermented, but the coconuts do provide some natural fermentation. The alcohol content is only around 1 percent. Poyo has the color of milk, but is quite watery. Ginger beer is a popular alcoholic beverage in Sierra Leone. Fermented honey is mead.
7. The Sierra Leone Refugee All-Stars have been around since 2006. What are they famous for?

Answer: Music

They are musicians. The band was formed by Ruben Koroma, his wife Grace, guitarist Francis John Langba (aka Franco), and bassist Idrissa Bangura (aka Mallam). They first started performing in refugee camps, and once the civil war was over, became a world-wide phenomnenon. They have been the subject of a documentary, played all over the United States, and released their third album in 2012.
8. On a trip around Freetown, I see a huge tree near the center of town. What is it called?

Answer: Cotton Tree

The Cotton Tree is the most visible landmark of Freetown. The tree is over 200 years old, and is the logo for Visit Sierra Leone, the national tourism agency. It is home to bats and vultures and has a great deal of mystical symbolism. Palm trees and pepper trees are indigeneous to Sierra Leone, and both are raised for food. The Baobab grows farther south, near the Equator.
9. I decide to head out into the country, and visit Sierra Leone's highest point. Where am I going?

Answer: Mount Bintumani

Mount Binutmani, also knows as Loma Mansa, is 1945 meters tall (6,381 feet). It is part of the Loma mountains, and the rainforest in its lower slopes is home to hippos, crocodiles, and primates. Kilimanjaro, ar 5892 meters, is the highest summit in Africa, and is on the other size of the continent in Tanzania. Mount Nimba, the highest point in Guinea, is 1752 meters. Mount Wuteve, the highest point in Liberia, is 1440 meters.
10. In Kurunbala, a town very close to Sierra Leone's highest point, the villagers tell me I am also near the source of what major African river?

Answer: Niger

The Niger starts just over the border in southeastern Guinea. It is the third longest river in Africa, at 4180 kilometers (2600 miles), running through Mali, Niger and Nigeria. The Nile begins in Rwanda or Burundi. The Congo starts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo -- go figure. The Zambewi is much further south, in Zambia and Mozambique.
