Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which group had a hit with the song "Silver, Blue and Gold"?

Answer: Bad Company

"Run With the Pack" was Bad Company's 3rd studio album, released in 1976. "Silver, Blue and Gold" is probably the best known title from this album, up there with the title song "Run With the Pack" and "Live for the Music".
2. 65-year-old Maggie Kuhn founded an activist group in 1970 that took a name in 1972 based on that of another more radical group of activists popular at the time. Which group did Ms. Kuhn found?

Answer: Grey Panthers

Maggie Kuhn was forced to retire in 1970, even though she didn't want to, and founded what became the Grey Panthers later that year. The press first referred to the group as "grey panthers", a play on the Black Panthers that were very active at the time. About the name, Maggie Kuhn was quoted as saying ""It's a fun name.

There's a certain militancy, rather than just a docile acceptance of what our country's doing." Pictured is a Lincoln Town Car, one of the many Ford/Lincoln/Mercury models that was built on a chassis named the "Panther"
3. The colorful movie "Crimson Tide" contained more than one reference to which "colorful" comic book character?

Answer: Silver Surfer

In the tense submarine drama, two crewmen come to blows - not over their being a whisker away from launching nuclear weapons, but over the best version of the character Silver Surfer. Jack Kirby drew the first Silver Surfer in 1966 and many others followed, including Jean Giraud (Moebius) in 1988 - it was the work of these two comic artists that started the submerged fight.
4. What particular shade of gray is the main color of U.S. Navy ships?

Answer: Haze Gray

"Haze Gray and Underway" is a popular term to describe hardworking USN ships: their color and where they can be found at work. As the picture shows, this color is very effective camouflage against the sea and sky, especially in conditions of low light or haze.
5. At the Olympics, gold is rated higher than silver. In the U.S. military, silver generally denotes a higher position. Which officer would wear this rank device?

Answer: Commander, U.S. Coast Guard

The silver oak leaf is for the O-5 rank in all U.S. armed forces, called "Commander" in the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy and "Lieutenant Colonel" in the Army, Marines and Air Force. A gold oak leaf is for O-4 (Lieutenant Commander/Major).
6. Charlton Heston was the captain of what type of naval vessel in the 1978 movie "Gray Lady Down"?

Answer: Submarine

The USS Neptune is a nuclear submarine that is sunk in a collision during peacetime. The movie "Gray Lady Down" tells of the (mostly) successful rescue of the sunken sub. Although an interesting title, most submarines of that time and since are painted black, while surface ships are painted gray.
7. Acer saccharinum is one of the most common trees in North America and has which colorful common name, not to be confused with its relative Acer saccharum that has a "sweet" name?

Answer: Silver Maple

The silver maple is also known as the white maple, as well as other names. The fruit of the silver maple is the largest of any maple tree, and includes a "winged" structure called a samara that helps disperse the seed.
8. Actress Linda Gray played the character Sue Ellen Ewing on which long-running TV drama?

Answer: Dallas

Linda Gray is an American actress best known playing the long-suffering wife of villain J.R. Ewing, played by Larry Hagman, on the popular show "Dallas" for 12 seasons. Gray visited Hagman days before he died in 2012 and issued a statement that "Larry Hagman was my best friend for 35 years.

He was the Pied Piper of life and brought joy to everyone he knew." The city of Dallas is the headquarters of American Airlines and one of the airline's major hubs.
9. Which Rolls Royce car model, manufactured from 1965-1980, was the model with the largest production run?

Answer: Silver Shadow

The original name "Silver Mist" was changed to "Silver Shadow" because "mist" is German for "manure". The Silver Shadow is a more modern sedan-style automobile that replaced the older style Silver Cloud that was produced 1955-1966.
10. "Touch of Gray" (1987) was the first music video for which 1960s band?

Answer: The Grateful Dead

"I will get by / I will survive" is the well known refrain of The Grateful Dead's "Touch of Gray". The video was wildly popular on MTV in 1987 and helped reintroduce the band to a new generation of fans. In the video, the band members are at first represented by life-size skeleton marionettes, then change into the actual people.
