Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Las Vegas is a Spanish phrase. What does the name of this desert encompassed city translate as?

Answer: The Meadows

Las Vegas, in the Mojave desert, is the county seat of Clark County and the most populated city in the state of Nevada. It is known world wide for its 24 hour gambling, with figures from 2019 showing that almost a quarter of a million people are employed in the leisure and hospitality sector in the city, compared to just 23,000 in manufacturing.
The city is also home to the world's largest cannabis dispensary, Planet 13, which opened in 2018 and is licensed to grow 2100 pounds (950 kg) of cannabis a year.
2. In 1955, the first racially integrated casino and hotel opened in Las Vegas. What was its name?

Answer: Moulin Rouge

The Moulin Rouge, named after the famous Paris nightclub, was a joint venture between heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis and local businessmen who had identified a gap in the market.
Due to the segregation laws of the time, African Americans were banned from most casinos, unless they were working there, either as a part of the resort staff or as an entertainer.
The Moulin Rouge was an instant success as it allowed people that were not allowed to gamble at the other casinos to do so, such as Sammy Davis Jr., Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole, which attracted huge numbers of patrons and celebrities alike.
3. In which town is most of the Las Vegas strip?

Answer: Paradise

Paradise is an unincorporated town which butts up to the city of Las Vegas and as well as being home to most of the world famous strip, is also the location of the famous "Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada" sign, which is actually located four and a half miles (seven kilometres) outside the city limits.
Las Vegas is home to just a small part of the northern end of the strip, and interestingly, the Las Vegas monorail never actually enters Las Vegas, instead it connects Paradise with the also unincorporated town of Winchester.
4. In the 1980s, the Tropicana became the first casino on the Las Vegas strip to offer which twist on playing blackjack?

Answer: Swim up tables

Although the experience is billed as swim up blackjack, in reality it is wade up blackjack in order to ensure that patrons' possessions, such as money and chips, don't get wet, although the casino does have a money drying machine, just in case.
Another unusual feature of swim up blackjack is that, for obvious reasons, no electronic card shufflers are used, instead all decks are shuffled by hand.
I wonder how many people, while drinking and playing, use the fact they are stood in waist high water as an excuse not to leave the tables when they need the bathroom though?
5. In 2017, a hockey team from Las Vegas entered the NHL. What are they called?

Answer: Vegas Golden Knights

The Golden Knights had a fairy tale start to life, when in their first season, they reached the Stanley Cup finals, eventually losing 4-1 to the Washington Capitals.
On forming, the team became the first NHL expansion team since 2000, when both the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild joined, as well as being the first major professional sports franchise to be based in Las Vegas.
6. The Flamingo Las Vegas opened its doors in 1946. Which gangster provided the funds for this hotel and casino?

Answer: Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel

Siegel had long been interested in Las Vegas property, but found many of his plans vetoed by city officials due to his mob connections, so when he heard that Billy Wilkerson, the owner of "The Hollywood Reporter" was struggling to raise funds to complete his luxury hotel and casino project, Siegel stepped in with an offer, buying a two thirds interest in the project.
Siegel eventually took control of the building project and in 1946, proudly opened the first luxury hotel on the strip, but the venture failed, forcing Siegel to close its doors in January 1947, until more investors could be found. Although the hotel wasn't complete, the doors opened again in March 1947 and it was soon reporting huge profits, but for Siegel, his time was almost up. In June of the same year he was shot to death by an unknown gunman in Beverly Hills, California, and ownership passed to the owners of the El Cortez Hotel, also in Las Vegas.
In tribute to him, there is a street in Las Vegas called Bugsy Siegal Circle, and yes, the city managed to spell his surname wrong on all of the signage.
7. The future city of Las Vegas was the site of a supply fort built in 1855 by members of which religious group?

Answer: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as Mormons, built the supply fort here as it marked the half way point between their communities in Salt Lake City, Utah and Los Angeles, California, which was their main point for purchasing supplies.
The fort was abandoned by the Mormons during the Utah War of 1857-1858 and gradually fell into disrepair, until in 1991, the city took ownership and made the area a national park. The fort has been fully renovated and opened to the public in 2005 and is included on the National Register of Historic Places.
8. In 1997, a store, four storeys high, dedicated to which candy opened on the Las Vegas strip?

Answer: M&M's

M&M's World is a piece of chocolate heaven in Las Vegas, as well as being an advertising executive's dream. Within this store's walls you can buy just about anything you can think of, emblazoned with the candy logo - from kitchen utensils to golf club covers, from underwear to shower curtains, it all can be found here.
Also you can personalise your M&M's with corporate designs or pictures of a loved one, choosing from the 22 different colours of the candy available here.
The store also features a movie theatre, showing M&M themed movies, as well as having an M&M's sponsored Toyota Camry race car on display, and a whole other gift section dedicated to the brand's NASCAR involvement.
9. Which of the following is *NOT* a nickname for Las Vegas?

Answer: The Mini Apple

Glitter Gulch, AKA Downtown Las Vegas or Fremont Street, is often referred to as Glitter Gulch, and the city has long styled itself as Entertainment Capital of the World.
The Atomic City nickname was widely used in the 1950s and 1960s, when nuclear weapons testing took place at the Nevada Test Site, 105 kilometres (65 miles) northwest of the city, and gamblers could take a break and watch the mushroom clouds, while being exposed to nuclear fallout. Since 1963, all nuclear tests must be conducted underground, so that particular entertainment option is no longer available.
While it is also known as the City of Lakes, Minneapolis, Minnesota is the city nicknamed the Mini Apple.
10. In 2017, the deadliest modern day mass shooting in USA up to that point occured at which hotel on the Las Vegas strip?

Answer: Mandalay Bay

Stephen Paddock fired off over 1,100 rounds of ammunition from his suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel in just ten minutes, killing 58 people and wounding 422, although the panic caused by his actions, raised the injured toll to 851.
The large crowd was gathered for the annual Route 91 Harvest country music festival and singer Jason Aldean had just started his set when Paddock opened fire.
In a wonderful show of unity, the city and its visitors rallied, as the following day, people lined up for over six hours to donate blood which was much needed by the local hospitals.
Paddock killed himself in his Mandalay Bay hotel room, and following his attack, bump stocks, which allow a rapid rate of gun fire, were banned by the U.S. Justice Department.
