Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the capital of Burkina Faso?

Answer: Ouagadougou

None of the others exist as far as I know : )
2. Tuvalu and Kiribati are part of what group of islands?

Answer: Micronesia

3. Much of China's vast Muslim population lives in what province or 'autonomous region'?

Answer: Xinjiang

Though independent statistics from this part of the world are hard to come by, China's Muslim population is somewhere between 50 and 200 million!
4. The population of the Chinese Xinjiang region largely belongs to what ethnic group?

Answer: Uygurs

The Uygurs live mostly in Xinjiang, bordering on Afghanistan. The people's ways are surprisingly similar to those of their neighbours, despite years of government effort to assimilate them into mainstream Chinese culture. Though they still use Arabic script, they mostly write in Chinese, not Arabic!
5. Though the author of this quiz is not very proficient in American history, he is willing to claim that only one country has actually invaded US soil with ground troops in 'recent' times. Which one?

Answer: Japan

OK, so it's a trick question, sort of. Japan landed groundtroops in Alaska close to the end of the war, I believe it was in late '44 rather than early '45, although no one really knows how long they managed to operate their modest base unnoticed. US surveillance flights noticed unusual movement and personnel concentrations they couldn't account for and found a fully functioning Japanese base in their own backyard.

After a fierce battle the ramaining Japanese soldiers committed suicide by pulling the pins out of all their grenades.

It's a little known footnote in the history of WW2.
6. Noam Chomsky and Michel Foucault were once enticed to debate their respective views of philosophy and politics in Holland. However, the often controversial Foucault later said he only consented to the interview because of the sponsors offer of ...

Answer: A large slab of hashish

Foucault's friends referred to it as 'the Chomsky hash', and it is said to have taken them months to smoke it all! The debate was truly remarkable, Chomsky putting up as good a case for Socialism as any I've heard, while Foucault remained relativistic throughout, choosing to question the very premise of any topic.
7. Pakistan is not very enthusiastic about the return of the deposed Afghan King, Zahir Shah to form a post-Taliban government. Why?

Answer: He fought a border war with Pakistan during his rule

Iran doesn't like him because he's a Sunni supremist and represents the Monarchy they fought so hard to depose. Pakistan, on the other hand, simply holds a grudge from his failed border expansion war in the sixties.
8. This UN member state once had its secret service attempt to assassinate another nation's leader while he was in their country as a guest for an international convention. What country took this action at grave risk of international outcry and condemnation?

Answer: The USA

The CIA made many failed attempts to kill Castro, but the most incredible of all was during his stay in the the US as a guest of an international convention that was aimed at solving disputes such as those that exist between the US and Cuba. It was a sad day for democracy.
9. These three countries are the only ones to ever recognise the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, though none of them has any diplomatic ties with them today (November 2001):

Answer: United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan

10. Until Iceland got independence in 1944, they were ruled by what colonial power?

Answer: Denmark

While Iceland once belonged to Norway, they had been under Danish rule for centuries when they were granted their status as a free Republic.
