1. My first fantastic granny is actually a group of grannies who do knit, but not jumpers or scarves. Which cereal says it is "knitted by nanas"?

Answer: Shreddies

Shreddies is a breakfast cereal made in the UK consisting of small squares of four layers of interwoven whole grain wheat. The advertising campaign states that it is "lovingly knitted by nanas" and urges us to eat up as they can always knit more.
2. My second granny on the fantastic list is quite a scary one. We all know what happened to Little Red Riding Hood's granny, but which Terry Pratchett Discworld book features this and other fairy tales, along with Granny Weatherwax?

Answer: Witches Abroad

"Witches Abroad" takes Magrat Garlik, Granny Weatherwax and and Nanny Ogg off to rescue Magrat's fairy god-daughter, Ella. Along the way they encounter parodies of various fairy tales including "Little Red Riding Hood", "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty".

They rescue the god-daughter and dispose of the wicked witch, who turns out to be Granny Weatherwax's sister Lilith, before returning home. Can you imagine Granny Weatherwax sitting in a corner knitting?
3. Granny number three truly breaks the mould. Who is the American granny who took up painting in her 70's?

Answer: Grandma Moses

Anna Mary Moses did not start painting until she was in her seventies when arthritis forced her to stop embroidering. Hailed as America's premier folk artist she was entirely self taught, and prolific, painting some 3600 canvasses over a 30 year period. She died in 1961 age 101, and in 2006 one of her works, "Sugaring Off", painted in 1943, sold for $1.2M.
4. Now for a short musical interlude. Number four granny is not actually a granny, but a song about them. Who sung "There's No-one Quite Like Grandma"?

Answer: St Winifred's School Choir

Recorded in 1980 and spending eleven weeks in the British charts, two of those at number one, including the all important Christmas week, this song, recorded by St Winifred's School Choir, was written by Gordon Lorenz. This was not the first time the school choir had been involved with a pop record, they were used as backing vocalists on "Matchstick Men and Matchstick Cats and Dogs" by Brian and Michael. One of the choristers, Sally Lindsay, went on to have a successful acting career including a role in "Coronation Street".
5. Granny number five is not one that you would wish to meet. In "Flowers In The Attic" what did evil grandmother Olivia pour over Catherine Dollanganger's hair?

Answer: Burning tar

"Flowers In The Attic" by Virginia Andrews is the story of four children imprisoned in an attic by their mother who leaves them to the mercy of their abusive grandmother. In addition to pouring tar over Catherine's hair in an effort to make her cut it all off she also tries to poison all four of them with arsenic sprinkled onto doughnuts, succeeding in killing one of them. Because part of the story line deals with incest between the two oldest children the book has aroused some controversy and has been banned in various areas at various times.
6. Our number six fantastic granny truly lived up to that description. She married a man who became King and was grandmother to a nation. What was the maiden name of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother?

Answer: Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon

The Queen Mum, as she was affectionately known, was born Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1900. She married Albert, Duke of York, who was the second son of George V and Queen Mary. He was never expected to be King, but his brother, Edward VIII abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson and he became George VI.

After his death she carved her own niche, carrying out numerous official engagements each year, refusing to stop working even when she reached 100, although age did curtail her activities. She died in 2002 age 102. Thousands of people lined the streets of London for her funeral.

Answer: Grandma Mazur
