Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fish was famous throughout the 1980s as the leader singer with Marillion. What is his real name?

Answer: Derek Dick

Born Derek William Dick in Scotland in 1958, Fish rose to fame when Marillion's first big hits "Lavender" and "Kayleigh" both reached the Top 5 in the UK Singles Charts in 1985.
Marillion were actually formed in 1981.
2. The first single released by Marillion in the UK was "Market Square Heroes" in 1982. There were objections to the line "I am your Antichrist", and in order to get airplay, a radio edit of the song was made with this line changed. What was it changed to?

Answer: I am your Battle Priest

"Market Square Heroes" entered the UK Singles Chart twice, in November 1982 and January 1983. It failed to make the Top 50, but has sold steadily ever since as the band's devoted 'hardcore' fans still collect their work.
The band's two follow up singles, "Garden Party" and "He Knows You Know", taken from their first studio album, "Script for a Jester's Tear", both made it into the Top 40 on the UK Singles Charts.
3. In 1992, Fish sang the part of Crixus the Gaul in a musical adaptation of which film story?

Answer: Spartacus

The album "Jeff Wayne's Musical Adaptation of Spartacus" was released in 1992. As well as Fish, Catherine Zeta Jones and Ladysmith Black Mambazo also voiced characters. The role of Spartacus was sung by Alan King, and the piece also featured Sir Anthony Hopkins as Crassus.

In 2005, Fish made a brief foray into acting in film, when he appeared as a mental patient in "The Jacket" based on a novel by Jack London. Titled "The Star Rover" in the US, "The Jacket" was published in 1915, and was the last novel London wrote before his death in 1916.
4. Marillion had their first UK number one in 1985, with their third studio album release. Which album was this?

Answer: Misplaced Childhood

"Misplaced Childhood" was number one on the UK Albums Chart in June 1985. The album was remastered and re-released in 1998 as a double CD package with bonus previously unreleased tracks included.
The song "Kayleigh" was released as a single, and reached number two in the UK Singles Charts.
By 2005, research showed that over 95% of girls called Kayleigh in the UK had been born after the song's release!
5. "Day by day it's getting louder And day by day it's getting stronger But when I can't scream no more and I need reassurance, I listen to the crowd" Which album title track by Fish do these lyrics come from?

Answer: Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors

"Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors" was released in the UK in 1990, and was Fish's first solo album after he parted company with Marillion two years earlier.
The album reached number five on the UK Albums Chart, and two of the three singles released from it in the UK also made the Top 30 on the UK Singles Chart.
6. In 2001, Fish started an independent record label with a rather strange name. What was it?

Answer: Chocolate Frog

If Fish chose the name for Chocolate Frog after reading the "Harry Potter" books by J.K. Rowling, he isn't telling!
The company's music is distributed by vintage prog-rock specialists Voiceprint Records and Snapper Music.
7. Which Marillion song, sung by Fish, are these lyrics from? "Numb, a valium child, bored by meaningless collisions. A lonely stretch of headlight, diamonds trapped in black ice"

Answer: Lords of the Backstage

"Lords of the Backstage" is from the "Misplaced Childhood" album.
Another line of the lyrics, "Ashes are burning, burning", references the 'signature' song "Ashes are Burning" by the English prog-rock band Renaissance, and the line "I'm too far out and I'm too far in" comes from the song "Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" by British band Van der Graaf Generator.
8. In 2008, Fish won a Silver award at the UK Sony Radio Academy Awards. His award was for his "Fish on Friday" show, on a digital station he had previously helped rescue from bankruptcy in an "artist buy out". Which station was this?

Answer: Planet Rock

Fish's Sony Award was in the 'Music Broadcaster of the Year' category, and later in 2008 both Fish and Gary Moore also won awards at the New York Festivals Radio Broadcasting Awards, again for their shows on Planet Rock radio station.
It was Fish and Gary Moore, along with Tony Iommi and Ian Anderson, who bought Planet Rock to save it from closing down in 2008.
9. Which solo song by Fish has these lyrics? "The sparks that danced within our eyes, and in our hearts there was a fire, That burned so brightly, we were so alive,"

Answer: Where in the World

"Where in the World" is from the "13th Star" album, which was released in the UK in 2007 via the internet, and in 2008 on general release to shops. Fish's ninth solo album, it was released on his own Chocolate Frog record label.
10. "Raingods with ____" Which of these things completes this title of one of Fish's solo albums?

Answer: Zippos

"Raingods with Zippos" was released in 1999, and was the 6th studio album by Fish to be released in the UK.
The Zippo Manufacturing Company was founded in Pennsylvania in 1932, and their lighters, first made in 1933, are now iconic worldwide. They are highly collectible, with rare models changing hands between afficionados for prices which have exceeded $35,000!
