Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Welcome to our midnight metal show. Since we are the Chalice of Malice, all of our songs will involve the word "chalice" in the lyrics. This first offering comes from the band Avantasia's album "Metal Opera". It might not be well known, but when we saw the title we decided to open our shows with it. What song?

Answer: Chalice of Agony

Avantasia was formed by Edguy frontman Tobias Sammet. The name is a combination of the words "Avalon" and "Fantasy". The concept album "Metal Opera" was Sammet's brainchild. Seven musicians and ten vocalists are credited on this album. Singers have the roles of pope, bishop, dwarf, elf and tower, among others.
2. Staying in the 1980s, our next tune is going to be "Invisible", which talks about the "chalice of the soul", by one Mr. Ronnie James ___. Complete the name.

Answer: Dio

Ronald James Padavona was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. His interest in Rock n' Roll caused him to turn down a scholarship to Julliard. He was in many bands early in his career, including Elf. Some members of Elf got the opportunity to open for Deep Purple. Elf, with the addition of Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, later became Rainbow.

Not wanting to become too mainstream, Padavona left Rainbow and took over the lead vocals of Black Sabbath.
3. Many of you might not know the song "Left Handshake" from the 1980s, but it's one of our favorites to play. This song is performed by a band which is most well-known for the song "Dig It". Who performs the song, singing "Take this chalice, the elixir of life"?

Answer: Skinny Puppy

This industrial band formed in Vancouver, British Columbia. The members have been outspoken about their thoughts on animal rights. They have been noted as pioneers in the industrial and electronic genres of music. In 1988, Nine Inch Nails opened for Skinny Puppy on their North American tour, and Trent Reznor credited them as a big influence on his music. Skinny Puppy's style was dark, but contained messages on topics like politics, religion, animal rights and the environment.

Their live performances have been noted as being highly theatrical.
4. Time to kick it up a notch with the most morbid song on our play list. It comes from Cannibal Corpse and talks about their "sacrificial chalice". Which song?

Answer: Buried in the Backyard

Cannibal Corpse is known for playing death metal and their songs are highly violent and sexual in nature. The cover art for their albums is also considered disturbing, which some say is an art form in itself. Buried in the Backyard's albums have been banned in Australia and Germany for periods of time. U.S. Presidential candidate Bob Dole singled them out during his campaign in 1996 for being detrimental to the character of United States citizens.

However, actor Jim Carey was a fan of theirs and had them appear in his movie "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective".
5. This song will end our midnight showing; we will be back tomorrow for a much more subdued afternoon performance and show you some of our musical versatility. Let's finish by going on an "Odyssey" with this band and their "Chalice of Gold and Jade". Which band?

Answer: Symphony X

Symphony X falls into the progressive metal category. The band formed in 1994. They have used classical works, such as Homer's "Odyssey" and Milton's "Paradise Lost", for their songs and concept albums. Some of their songs and albums have been recorded in The Dungeon, which is a recording studio in band member Michael Romeo's house.
6. Time to start our afternoon show today, which is a much more relaxing version of our midnight show from last night. Since we are performing here live, we thought we would bring you a song by the band Live, which involves a "drink from the chalice of sweet escape". Which song?

Answer: Lighthouse

The album "Throwing Copper" put Live into the music spotlight in 1994. It was the follow-up to the 1991 album "Mental Jewelry". Some minor controversy occurred in 2006, when American Idol contestant Chris Daughtry did a version of Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line". Daughtry credited himself with the version, which was actually previously done by Live.

Many songs by Live start slow and then build in intensity, peak, then become slow again, before finally increasing in intensity again.
7. Time to show some more of our versatility with this band that has two songs that fit our style. Tonight we will be bringing you "How Many Mics" by this trio who "Ascend from the Chalice". Which band?

Answer: Fugees

The members of the Fugees are Wyclef John, Lauryn Hill and Pras Michel. They perform in many genres on their albums, but the lyrics are usually spoken as rap. They avoid the "Gangsta Rap" style, while still bringing social issues to the forefront of their songs.

The song "How Many Mics" talks about some rap artists taking the easy road, selling out, and not being true to their own music.
8. It is Labor Day weekend. To commemorate the fantastic season we just had, a "voodoo chalice" is part of our next song called "Other Side of Summer". Which artist performs this song?

Answer: Elvis Costello

Elvis Costello's first single was released in 1977, entitled "Less Than Zero". His first album, "My Aim is True", was released in the UK, but no U.S. label chose to distribute his album. Hoping to remedy this by gaining attention, he ended up being arrested for busking (street performing) outside of a CBS convention.

His hand prints are enshrined in the European Walk of Fame, located in Rotterdam.
9. No artist can paint a picture of a relaxing summer day like this man, with his wonderfully titled song "Tin Cup Chalice". Name him.

Answer: Jimmy Buffett

Jimmy Buffett's other song "Gypsies in the Palace" could also fit into this quiz's theme. In September 2009, Jimmy joined other groups in the effort to preserve the Miami Marine Stadium, which is on the Virginia Key. He and his band have played many shows at the venue.

The venue, which has been designated a historical site, had been closed since 1992 and was in need of restoration. It was built for speedboat races, but worked very well for concerts.
10. Our time is almost up. I hope you enjoyed our selections as much as we enjoyed playing them for you. Let's go back to the 1970s for this song by the Scorpions and take a "look at the golden chalice". Which song?

Answer: Evening Wind

"Evening Wind" was released on the 1975 Scorpion album "In Trance". It was their third album, but the first album completed with producer Dieter Dierks. The Scorpions found their biggest success in the 1980s, mostly with hard-rocking songs like "Rock You Like a Hurricane" and "Blackout". They also had success with a slower song called "Winds of Change".
